One Hour Long Instagram Videos Might Soon Be Available

The used-to-be photo-only platform may soon allow users to post one hour long videos.

Instagram used to be a photo-only platform when it first debuted back in 2010. Fast forward three years later, it introduced 15 second videos to compete with the now-defunct Vine. Eventually, Instagram lengthened the videos to 60 seconds and added 15 second videos to Stories.

But now, rumours suggest that the Facebook-owned platform might be making a big leap and start supporting hour-long videos. So basically, your feed will end up looking like YouTube.

A report in The Wall Street Journal claims that this will come as an update. The videos would be in vertical format, similar to Stories videos.

Although this report is not yet confirmed and there are no further details to enlighten us, the move is not that surprising.

Instagram is owned by Facebook and the latter makes more money on ad revenues played on native videos on Facebook. The longer the video, the more ad space available, the more it can charge. However, teens are already abandoning the platform for Instagram and Youtube. Long videos on Instagram are only possible on Stories Live but it can’t really monetize that since there are no ads. The solution? Allow longer video posts.

This is also an obvious way to compete with YouTube. A recent study by Pew actually shows that YouTube has become the number one social network for US teens.

Again, this news is not yet confirmed and the WSJ has described the plan as “tentative” and “subject to change”. This means it may still not see the light of the day. But if it does come and you’re not a fan, you can always mute those annoying friends eh?

This year’s CES is actually a history in the making. This, as LG, has confirmed that it would unveil HU80KA projector ahead of CES this week. The company’s new projector has a price tag of $3, 000 USD.

HU80KA is LG’s 150-inch 4K HDR Projector

Obviously, LG has revealed ahead CES, one of its sought-after devices for 2018. The HU80KA is a 4K HDR projector. And the company claims that its new high-end projector is at par with the size of 4K projectors on the market.

Accordingly, LG’s HU80KA projector brags of its 4K video quality output. Apart from this, the new projector supports HDR with HDR10 tech. This means that the HU80KA projector could be compatible with both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One X gaming consoles.

LG’s HU80KA projector is described as both thin and tall. The projector’s design has also earned praise, saying its elegant and versatile. The projector could be mounted directly on the floor, mounted on a wall, and even a ceiling, among others.

Also, what makes HU80KA projector so popular is its ability to produce 2,500 lumens of brightness and includes two seven-watt speakers in its casing. Using the projector, you can also allow using the projector using Optical, HDMI and Bluetooth connectivity for use with high-end entertainment speakers.

Bandai Namco Announces Code Vein’s Release Date

Avid fans of the popular game Code Vein have something to cheer about. This comes after game developer Bandai Namco has released a new gameplay trailer of the game.

The gaming studio has also announced the release date of Code Vein this fall. Bandai Namco said the game is slated to release on September 27 for PS4, Xbox One. On Steam, Code Vein will be rolled out on the following day, September 28, respectively.

It is Hiroshi Yoshimura who directed Bandai Namco’s vampire-action RPG. Yoshimura has previously led several projects and the recent of which is the projects on God Eaters game.

In case you don’t know, the game is set a post-apocalyptic world wherein a hidden society of vampires live in a place called Vein. These vampires are known as the Revenants in the game. If you are player, you need to jump to get the role of a Revenant and fight through dungeons and bosses with an AI companion to gather blood.

And when playing the game, players can increase their character’s strength by collecting the Blood Veils of your enemies. This would also create new character abilities to defeat the monster’s overpowered attacks.

Samsung Chromebook Plus Now Supports Linux apps

The Chrome OS ecosystem is finally changing. This comes after Chromebooks, and the Chrome OS, in general, are now supporting Linux apps. This means that Chromebooks could now actually run more applications. By doing so, tech-savvy users claim that Chromebooks would become eventually a major competitor to both Mac and Windows laptops.

But not so fast! You might be asking what type of Chromebooks would support Linux apps. Search giant Google has earlier announced that only the Pixelbook has the feature to support Linux apps.

To date, Google’s Pixelbook is considered to the most expensive Chromebook on the market. However, several Redditors have discovered that Samsung Chromebook Plus also supports Linus apps. The aforesaid Chromebook is cheaper when compared to Pixelbook.

How to use Linux apps?

To use the various Linux apps in your own Samsung Chromebook Plus, you should opt-in to the developer’s build of Chrome OS. If you are done, you should install the Linux apps using Terminal. You just only need to complete all the instructions.

With this, tech users claim that in the coming years, the process would also be simplified and could apply to a more stable version of Chrome OS.

Accordingly, Google is planning to make a wide roll out of the support to Linus apps. Right now, the search giant is testing the waters with Linux apps running on Chrome OS.

Sharp to Acquire Toshiba PC Business for 36 Million

Toshiba has agreed to relinquish its PC business to Sharp as the former exits the PC market.

Toshiba has finally put up the white flag for its PC business as it sells it to Sharp.

The deal, worth four billion yen (or about $36 million), also includes the issuance of $1.8 billion in new shares by Sharp to buy back stock from banks.

Toshiba was the first company ever to introduce a notebook PC back in 1985 and were the leaders in the market. But with the birth of smartphones and tablets, PCs went in the backseat. The company used to sell as many as 17 million PCs a year. Now, they sell as little as 1.4 million units last year.

The company also got into more trouble when Westinghouse Electric, its nuclear power division, went bankrupt. Toshiba lost $9 billion.

For consumers however, this is not the end of its PCs. Sharp actually wants to breathe new life to this technology. Now that the former is owned by Foxconn, Sharp can take focus on producing more affordable computers.

The Osaka-based company is so confident with its acquisition of Toshiba that the former issued $1.8 billion in new shares to buy back preferred stock from banks.

Sharp is expected to wrap up the acquisition in October this year.

Apple issues new App Store rules For Streaming PC-based games

Tech giant Apple Inc. has issued new review guidelines for App Store intended for streaming PC-based video games. Apple’s decision attempts to block Steam’s proposal to extend its reach in both iPhones and iPads.

Steam is the considered to be the biggest distributor of video games for PC.

Apple’s remote mirroring apps

The new guidelines of the Cupertino-based company would now decide what apps should appear in the App Store. This means that any applications could not host anything even that app looks like an app store that is within the app.

In short, the company won’t give any users the sole absolute ability to “browse, select, or purchase software not already owned or licensed by the user.”

According to Apple, these new rules are called “remote mirroring apps.” This new rule works by beaming the screen of a PC to an iPhone. By doing so, it could allow purchases outside Apple’s control, provided that any give transactions were processed on PC and not through iPhone.

Meanwhile, several tech users claim that Apple’s decision is certainly significant. They pointed out that the company wants only to shield its practice of taking between 15 percent and 30 percent of the purchase price of software bought in the App Store.

Steam has announced its plan to release a free mobile phone app called Steam Link so gamers could continue playing on their iPhones while away from their desktop machines.

But the Bellevue, Steam’s parent company, in a separate statement, has slammed Apple for rejecting the Steam Link app. The Steam Link app is a free mobile app that allows gamers to play video games using their iPhones.

This phone has claimed 45 days stand-by in the battery. But the phone sports a 3300mAh one, which is not as high as expected. It remains to be seen if Lenovo will support the 45 days claim it made earlier.

The Z5 was launched along with Lenovo A5, and Lenovo K5 at an event held in Beijing, China. Lenovo Vice President Chang Cheng previously shared a concept sketch of the Lenovo Z5. The sketch had no bezels or notch. The phone was said to feature a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. But the final images of the phone are completely different from the images earlier released in China.

Free Up Disk Space

There are cases where the update process works for a while. Then it stops installing the update. Reverting back to the previous version of Windows 10, might help. But if it still does not work and the new update cannot be installed still, you may need to free up space on your hard drive.

The April 2018 update needs 16GB of free space for the 32-bit version. A 20GB free space on the hard drive is needed to install the 64-bit version of the Windows 10 new update. If you do not have this free space on your hard drive, then the April 2018 update will fail.

Disable Anti-virus Software

Another way to possibly solve the installation problem of the update is to disable your anti-virus software. You may need to uninstall the software temporarily then download the April 2018 Windows 10 update. But make sure to install it again after you are done installing the update.

Reset The Update

If installation problems of the update still persists, you may need to reset the update service and try again. To reset the update, open up the Command Prompt by typing “CMD” into the searchbar. This is another way of solving the installation problem of the update. You will need a blank DVD, or a USB stick to add the installation files. This should have at least 5GB of free space.

The Disappearing Desktop

This issue is being linked to Avast Antivirus. But both Microsoft and Avast has acknowledged the problem. The issue is being investigated. For now, it is advised to hold off installation of the April 2018 Windows 10 update until a fix has been released.

The Update Won’t Work On Alienware Laptops

If you are trying to install the update on your Alienware laptop, you will only get an error message saying “uninstall your laptop”. The reason for this is that the April 2018 update of Windows 10 has been blocked on certain Alienware laptops. This is because of a bug causing a black screen when waking from sleep mode. If you are affected by this issue, you can roll back to the Fall Creators Update.

Grab wants to sell you snacks and beauty products while you take a ride.

Ride-hailing giant Grab has just partnered with US start-up Cargo to bring Grab&Go to Southeast Asia. The partnership allows Grab drivers sell a selection of items to passengers during their ride.

Grab announced the new service in a blog post and through emails to its subscribers.

“If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll be able to help yourself to product samples like snack bars and beauty products absolutely free. You can also enjoy the convenience of buying an on-the-go refreshment or snack while you ride.”

Currently, Grab&Go has partnered with brands such as Kellogg’s, Biore UV, Novu and Unilever’s Lux Luminique for the free samples. Passengers are allowed to take home up to four complimentary products.

This latest offering is definitely a win-win for all. Brands get a new way to reach their customers, customers get free stuff, and the drivers earn extra income.

For each paid sale, drivers earn a 20% commission fee. They also earn a S$1 check-out bonus for every order from their Grab&Go box. Cargo claims that drivers can earn an $75-$250 per month through this.

Currently, the service is only available in Singapore. However, Grab tells TechCrunch that it will expand across Southeast Asia if this service is well-received. Grab serves 8 other countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.
