HBO Confirms Game of Thrones Prequel Pilot Order Plus Juicy Details!

HBO has given a pilot order to the untitled prequel for the hugely successful Game of Thrones series.

HBO’s most successful original series will not be completely saying goodbye after all. Game of Thrones is set to wrap up its final season in 2019. But good news! The network has just green lit a pilot for the show.

The prequel/spinoff will be created by George R R Martin and screenwriter Jane Goldman.

Don’t expect your favourite GoT actors to make an appearance on the show though. According to HBO, it will be set way, WAAAAY back in Westeros’ history. To be precise, thousands of years before any of the Game of Thrones events have occured.

On Monday, writer George RR Martin offered more details about the show on his blog.

“To clarify, what we have here is a pilot order, not as yet a series order. Though of course we are all hoping that will follow.”

He shares that the project is still very much at its infancy.

“We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title.”

Martin says his vote for the title is for The Long Night but he assumes that HBO will want to have ‘Game of Thrones’ in it.

Fans shouldn’t expect the show to be launched immediately after the end of GoT too. If there’s anything that we’re sure of, is that there’s always a long wait in between our GoT fixes.

A logline from HBO also provided some teasers for the plot pilot:

“Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

Security Flaw Fix For OnePlus 6 Is On Its Way

Security researchers discovered a flaw on OnePlus 6 but said a fix is on its way. They discovered the vulnerability on the OnlePlus 6 lets you bypass the phone’s locked bootloader with any modified boot image.

The company acknowledged the vulnerability and said it will push out a software update to fix the issue. Physical access to the phone is needed to take advantage of its vulnerability.

The OnePlus 6 Security Flaw

The perfect pixel alternative. That is the OnePlus 6. But it features a security that will thankfully be fixed in a software update.

Edge Security LLC president and XDA Developers forum member Jason Donenfeld said the OnePlus 6 features a vulnerability that let him bypass the locked bootloader with any modified boot image. What is weirder, Donenfeld said, is he did not have to turn on USB debugging. This is a usual requirement when you mess around with your smartphone.

The Solution To The OnePlus 6 Security Flaw

Despite the security flaw on the OnePlus 6, there is still a good news. And that it, someone will need physical access to your OnePlus 6 to take advantage of the flaw. Then they need to plug the phone into a computer, restart the phone into fastboot mode, and transfer any arbitrary or modifies boot image.

But wait, there is more good news. OnePlus said it is aware of the vulnerability and that they are in contact with Donefeld. They have also confirmed that a software update will be out shortly to fix the issue.

This is another serious oversight on the part of OnePlus. They have had issues before involving the Engineer Mode app, the Factory Mode app, and the stolen credit card information. Hopefully this security flaw on the OnePlus 6 will not do too much damage on the image of the company. They must roll out the software soon to solve the issue and repair whatever damage the flaw has created.

Microsoft And EA Are Launching Their Own Streaming Services

Microsoft and EA both have plans to allow users to stream games to their smartphones and other devices.

It seems like streamed gaming is this year’s trend. Both Microsoft and EA have confirmed that they are working on their own streaming services.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson introduced the plan at its EA Play press event on Saturday. According to Wilson, the company is working on a way for gamers to stream its library of games onto smartphones, tablets and low-end PCs. It’s highly possible that the service will be tied to the Origin Access subscription.

The company showcased the streaming service at the event but clarified that its not ready to launch.

EA acquired cloud gaming company GameFly for an undisclosed amount last month. The latter developed technology to stream PC games to Samsung and LG smart TVs as well as Amazon Fire TV devices. It just makes sense for EA to make use of GameFly for its own upcoming streaming service.

On Sunday, Xbox maker Microsoft followed suit and announced its own streaming service as well. Similar to EA, the cloud gaming service might be accessed through its Xbox Game Pass.

“Our cloud engineers are building a game streaming network to unlock console-quality gaming on any device. We are dedicated to perfecting your experience everywhere you want to play — your Xbox, your PC and your phone.”

Neither of the companies were the first to try bringing cloud gaming to devices but none have been quite successful. However, with the 5G network coming soon, these two might just be able to pull it off.

Both companies did not provide further details including availability and pricing for the streaming service. That means we have to be on our toes for more news. Are you excited?

Foxconn Factory For Amazon Outed For Horrible Labor Conditions

An investigation is under way after a report slammed the company for “appalling” work conditions.

Both Amazon and Foxconn are under fire after a 94-page report revealed the horrible conditions workers endure.

The New York-based China Labor Watch published the damning report on Sunday, June 10. The investigation was secretly conducted from August 2017 to April 2018 and discussed the work conditions in detail. It was carried out at the Hengyang Foxconn, a factory that predominantly manufactures products for Amazon.

Overworked, Underpaid

Under Chinese labor law, the maximum number of overtime is 36 hours. Workers at the factory however were subjected to at least 80 hours of overtime. And instead of paying them time-and-a-half for the extra hours, they get paid the normal hourly rate.

The factory is also hiring more dispatch workers than legally allowed. The latter refer to contract workers who do not get sick pays or holidays. They can also be made redundant without salary during production slowdowns. By law, only 10% of the workforce should constitute dispatch workers but the Foxconn factory has as much as 40%.

The report also revealed that the workers were subjected to verbal abuse.

Li Qiang, executive director of China Labor Watch notified Amazon Chief Jeff Bezos of the findings. “This violates Chinese labour law. Foxconn uses a large number of dispatch workers and violates workers’ interests via these dispatch companies. This practice, in and of itself, is unethical and illegal,” he wrote.

Amazon replied that they “recognize the responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of factory workers manufacturing products for Amazon.”

Foxconn, on its part, released a statement following the report.

“We are carrying out a full investigation of the areas raised by that report, and if found to be true, immediate actions will be taken to bring the operations into compliance with our Code of Conduct,” Foxconn Technology Group said in a statement.

Foxconn is the largest hardware manufacturer in the world. It also produces products for Microsoft and Apple. In 2013, Foxconn came under fire after 17 workers committed suicide in the factory by jumping off the building.

Siri might be the most widely used digital assistant, but Alexa isn’t far behind. Amazon’s smart digital assistant has been gaining a lot of traction over the last year thanks to its smart speakers.

Apple Watch users rely on Siri to do their hands-free tasks for them. And Apple’s wearable tech can’t officially run any other assistant. But now, an app allows you to use Amazon’s Alexa assistant on your Apple Watch.

Voice in a Can is a third-party app that lets you talk to Alexa from your wrist. It’s a standalone Apple Watch app, so you don’t need to tether to an iPhone to use it. As long as you have Wi-Fi or LTE (for Apple Series 3 LTE-enabled watches), you’re good to go.

So how does it work?

Voice in a Can uses a watch complication so that you can launch it from the watchface. All you have to do is sync your main Amazon Alexa account. To talk to Alexa, just tap on the icon in the app.

The Verge warns that you can expect Alexa to be slow to respond. It also suggests increasing the timeout setting for apps on the Apple Watch because the Alexa service disconnects every time the display goes blank.

Since Voice in a Can is a third-party app, you won’t be able to enjoy certain features. This includes making calls, playing music, or Echo announcements. However, the app fully fully supports the smart home features of Alexa.

Apple Watch To Get Solid-State Touch-Sensitive Buttons

According to a report by Fast Company, the next-generation Apple Watch will be doing away with the mechanical buttons.

The Cupertino-based company is reportedly planning to replace the mechanical buttons found on the right side of the watches to touch-sensitive ones. The report claims that the information is from a source with direct knowledge of Apple’s plans.

Having the solid-state buttons will make the watches more resistant to water. This is because the opening required for the movable part will now be eliminated. Without the mechanical buttons as well, there will be more space internally for a larger battery.

The next-gen Apple Watch will retain the design of the current models, as in having the Digital Crown and side button. However, neither of them will click as before. Instead, they will adopt a haptic feedback approach, very similar to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8.

Apple is also reportedly working on making the top buttons as sensors to gather health-related data. Currently, the heart rate sensor at the back of the watch works by direct skin contact. Having an additional sensor can make the readings more accurate and reliable.

It is not clear whether this improved design will be applied to the Apple Watches set to launch this year. If they don’t make a debut this September, expect to see them next year.

Fast Company also reports that this switch to solid-state buttons will pave the way to a completely button-less Apple Watch. This is part of the company’s “long-held desire” of streamlining the physical features of all its devices.
