EA Announces Battlefield 5 Details and Origin Access Premier

EA had some exciting news to share at E3 2018 including details on Battlefield 5 as well as a new subscription service.

Battlefield 5 is the latest entry in the iconic Battlefield franchise. First launched in 2002, the series gained popularity and spawned several versions. Now, EA is bringing its “deepest and most immersive” entry to the series.

Similar to Battlefield 1, the latest addition brings users back to World War II. This time, the intention is to give an insight into some of the lesser-known conflicts in that war.

Fans will be happy to know that Battlefield 5 will have both have a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes. Some of the multiplayers modes from Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1 are making a comeback but there are also two new ones to look forward to.

EA also confirmed the Battle Royale mode coming to the game. According to DICE, its version will include the brand of action and destruction that the Battlefield franchise is known for. The developer promised more information will be revealed in the next coming months.

The game is expected to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The early trial version is going to be available on October 11 to EA Access and Origin Access members. The deluxe and standard editions of the game will be available on October 16 and October 19 respectively.

Origin Access Premier

Aside from game updates, EA also announced its new all-in-one subscription service.

Basic members get to try new games up to ten hours, starting five days before release. Current Origin Access members will now become Origin Access Basic members and will have the same benefits as before.

The new Origin Access Premier brings full access to both archived games as new and pre-released games. This means unlimited playtime on the full versions of the games starting five days before the launch. Upcoming games include Anthem, Battlefield 5, Unravel 2, Fifa 19, A Way Out and Madden 19.

Membership for the service costs $15 per month or $100 a year. It will be available this summer.

Intel Tiger Rapid Is A Dual Screen Windows PC and E Ink Notepad in One

Intel unveils a prototype concept for a dual screen PC which could be the future of mobile computers.

This concept computer was first shown off at Computex 2018 and people are impressed. The Intel Tiger Rapid is a dual screen device that combines a Windows 10 PC and an E Ink Notepad.

The device has a 7.9-inch full HD LCD display on one side, and a 7.8-inch E Ink screen on the other. A single eighth-generation Kaby Lake Core processor powers both screens. Other features include an SSD, Wi-Fi, and a 12-wHr battery. It uses a single USB-C port for charging.

Don’t expect Intel to manufacture or release the device though. It was developed to show their manufacturing partners that it is possible. Intel also wants to showcase how e-paper displays can be used as both keyboards and writing notes with a stylus.

Gregory Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Client Computing Group, explains:

“Conceptually, it’s not a one-size fits all world. You’re going to see secondary products of different shapes and sizes, people are going to do secondary displays, obviously we’re going to work on longer-term things like bendables and foldables.”

The concept was apparently in the works for two years. Intel hints that consumers can expect to see a similar device sometime in the next two to three years. Perhaps Lenovo will do something like this for its Yogabook? Or maybe Microsoft will switch its Surface keyboard to E ink? We’ll have to wait to find out!

LinkedIn wants you to cover all the bases before deciding whether you want to apply for a job or not. That includes how long it takes for you to get to the workplace which is a big factor to a lot of people. The Your Commute feature helps with that.

The Microsoft-owned professional networking platform announced this new feature to helps job seekers factor in the distance to the workplace. It shows you the commute time whether you’re walking, driving or taking public transportation.

LinkInn announced the feature in a blog post.

“We’re always looking for ways to help our members make informed decisions about their career, and with all of these insights now directly within a job listing, we’re making it even easier to find the job that’s right for you.”

The feature is currently available on the LinkedIn mobile app. A new ‘See Your Commute’ option will be visible on the job listings page. You can enter your home address and the map will show you the travel duration to the job listing. It works similarly like Google Maps in showing directions.

The company also announced that soon, it will be possible for users to save their location information locally on their phones. This eliminates the need to input your address every time you look at a job listing.

Types of Automated Technologies in Modern Cars

A collision avoidance system uses technology that detects collisions before they occur and warns the driver. The car has sensors that detect approaching objects, such as other cars or pedestrians. The driver immediately receives warning alerts through beeps or flashes on the screen.

 

Automatic steering is part of an advanced cruise control system that allows the car to drive itself. Without the driver’s input, the car automatically adjusts the speed and steering controls. So, there are some considerations that need to be taken for drivers to truly feel safe with the many automatic features out there, and the ones to come. For the most part though, with significant oversight and care, cars can be far safer, with the inclusion of automated driving features.

Oppo Has Bought Samsung ‘Edge’ Displays

Oppo has ordered flexible OLED panels from Samsung. The latter is set to fulfil the orders by the end of June.

The Chinese smartphone maker is reportedly planning to integrate Samsung’s ‘Edge’ display on one of its upcoming smartphones. This may refer to the Korean tech giant’s Infinity displays, which are commonly sported on its flagship phones.

South Korean publication The Bell reports that Samsung is set to ship these panels by the end of this month. One panel costs $100, that’s about five times the price of a normal smartphone display. Bearing this mind, we’re assuming this new phone will come with an expensive price tag.

If the news is indeed true, this will be a first for both companies. A smartphone with a curved displays on both sides will be the first for Oppo.

As to Samsung, it has remained the only mass producer of the flexible OLED panels. It is also the only device OEM to utilize the technology in its devices since it first became available. This will be the first time that Samsung would be sharing the technology to another smartphone maker, assuming this actually comes to light.

The Oppo Find X is set to launch in an event hosted by the company on June 20.

The device comes with pretty high-end features such as 5X dual camera optical zoom, Snapdragon 845 processor, and up to 8GB of RAM. Although there is no information about the pricing yet, it looks like its shaping up to be a flagship phone material. And if Oppo is investing on $100 OLED displays, it is possible that the Find X could be the smartphone to have it.

Or perhaps Oppo is reserving that ‘Edge’ for something even more high-end? We’ll have to wait to find out!

FBI Tip: Reboot Your Router and Stay Safe Against Russian Malware

Last April, U.S. and U.K. officials issued a warning that Russians were behind a major threat to security through business or home smart devices. While the cyber threat was directed initially towards home and business routers running IoT devices, the attack would eventually move on to a massive scale involving water filtration systems and power lines. Sounding like a page from a spy novel, it sounds unlikely in the post-Cold War era but the FBI followed this up with another warning in late May.

According to Reuters, Russian hackers had breached thousands of home routers in the U.S. and could gather information or even shut down traffic. Some quarters considered this to be another witch hunt, just like what happened with Huawei and ZTE in previous years. In an effort to stem the threat, the FBI shut down a website that would ostensibly be used by the Russian hacker group named Sofacy to beam malicious information affecting about 700,000 routers in homes and businesses across 50 countries. According to FBI most of the susceptible devices were bought online. Cisco Systems Inc. claimed that the targeted routers were from Asus, D-Link, Huawei, Ubiquiti, Upvel, ZTE Linksys, MicroTik, Netgear Inc., TP-link, and QNAP; brands that are extremely popular among home users and favored by Internet providers. Sofacy (aka APT28 and Fancy Bear) was also implicated in hacking the Democratic National Committee in the most recent U.S. Presidential campaign.

According to CISCO, the U.S. is not yet under major attack but that it was the Ukraine that was the ultimate target. In a document shared to both the U.S. and Ukraine governments, it outlined how the malware caused millions in damages in the Ukraine and was behind a major power outage.

This particular VPNFilter malware is hard to detect due to encryption so it is best to be cautious. It has 3 stages and persisting to subsequent stages after a reboot at Stage 1 is possible. This is so different from other malware infecting smart devices which seldom survive a reboot. The FBI suggests rebooting your router and downloading updates to disrupt the malware’s action. Though that cut-off communication, there were still infected routers to deal with. It is strongly advised that remote management settings be disabled and passwords changed regularly.

Experts further recommend resetting of SOHO (small home and office) routers and NAS (network-attached storage) devices to factory defaults aside from simply rebooting. Users should also coordinate with their Internet Providers who can reboot SOHO routers and manufacturers to ensure that the most recent patches are installed.

Phishers encourage people to do somethings via email until they reach the point where they are able to get your personal info. The company advises its subscribers not to enter or log in your personal details. Ignore the email or better yet, type www.netflix.com directly on your web browser.

The Apple Support Scam Call

If you get a call from somebody pretending to be from the Apple Support Team, they are most likely trying to trick you and navigate you to a misleading website landing page. They would then convince you to buy something expensive, which you do not need. To avoid this, enable two-factor authentication for your Apple account to make sure you are not hacked. Or better yet, just hang up the phone when you hear that the caller is fron the Apple Support Team.

You Need A Good Quality Microphone

It is also advisable that you use earphones, earbuds or headsets so there won’t be any feedback from the speakers of your TV or sound system.

You don not really need a very fast internet connection. It just have to be a decent connection. Just make sure that your internet connection is fast enough to broadcast your video at 720p or more.

You Need To Use A Webcam

The purpose of live streaming is for you to be able to interact with your audience. These viewers would like to know what you look like. Streamers with webcams are much better than ones that don’t have. Your webcam does not have to be expensive also. Just decent.

Converse With A Friend

Engage your friend in a conversation while streaming. You can do this via Skype. Since no one will be talking when your stream is just starting, talking to somebody will help. Viewers leave right away if they do not hear anybody talking in a stream.

Make A Schedule

Set a fixed schedule for your stream. A lot of people will more likely watch your stream if it has a schedule than when you stream just any time.

Do Not Give Up
