Gmail goes down for more than hour

0

“Gmail is down & everyones having panic attacks,” a Twitter user wrote.

Well, Google’s Gmail did went offline for more than an hour on Tuesday and resulted to z lot of outcries from its users.

According to the Mountain View, Calif. company, it also had a “service disruption” on Monday as well.

These outages may not be a big deal for others but it is for the company and especially for the paying customers of Google apps.

Because most of Google’s services are cloud-based, it should be available without interruption.

The company also assures their customers that their services are up and available at least 99.9% all the time. Meaning, Google can only afford 0.1% (around 45 minutes) of a month for outages and problems. “Any less and Google starts to lose money back to businesses, which are credited with free service days based on the extent of the outage,” according to an LA Times report.

As of this writing however, Google has already fixed the problem and has assured its users.

“We’ve fixed the issue, and Gmail should be back up and running as usual. We’re still investigating the root cause of this outage, and we’ll share more information soon. Thanks for bearing with us.”

Google Chrome now on Sony Vaio

Yup, if you’re gonna buy a Sony VAIO today, it’ll probably come with Google Chrome pre-installed in your unit.

The FT reports that Google has announced Monday about their new alliance with Sony’s PC division to help promote their one-year-old browser.

“Awareness is shockingly low. It’s absolutely a problem that people don’t know what a browser is, or how to evaluate one,” Brian Rakowski, Google’s product manager for Chrome said.

Although backed by a very powerful company and a good browser too, if I say so myself, Chrome isn’t doing that well in terms of exposure.  Rakowski claims that the browser has already gained 30 million active users. However this number is just mere 2% of the overall internet-using population, compared to Internet Explorer’s 68% share.

And speaking of IE, for those fans of the browser, don’t worry because  Sony’s VAIO  still comes pre-installed with Internet Explorer too.

But although Chrome belongs to the bottom half of browser popularity, it has already prompted its rivals to keep up with Chrome’s faster speed and clean interface.

“It’s not so important everyone uses Google Chrome, it’s more important browser technology evolves as fast as it can,” Rakowski said.

New NFL Twitter policy

0

NFL fans can now rejoice as their favorite players can now use Twitter and other social media platforms again – but with restrictions still.

Previously, the league had prohibited players, coaches and club personnel from using laptops, cellphones and other electronic devices beginning pregame warm-ups until the conclusion of the game.

This would not have worked though because the lots of players are also er—Twitter addicts.

The league then released its amended policy Monday saying that “coaches, players and football operations personnel are permitted under league policy and with club permission to use social media on game day during specific time periods before and after games… up to 90 minutes before kickoff and after the game following media interviews.”

A written statement from NFL was issued stating their reason for the amendment: “The growth of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has created important new ways for the NFL and clubs to communicate and connect with fans. The NFL has been at the forefront of the use of new media and will continue to emphasize innovative and appropriate use of these new forms of communication.”

Yaaaay social media networks and its addictive nature! LOL

If you’re someone who has to use lots of applications while working in your computer, then you won’t be worrying about lack of screen space  if you’ve got this baby!

Alaska-based technology firm gScreen is releasing the world’s first laptop with twin monitors by the end of the year, and yes, it has TWO proper and usable 15.4-inch screens.

Named the Spacebook, this dual-screen laptop will be powered by the Windows 7 operating system and will be running on Intel Core 2 Duo processors. It has 4GBs of RAM and NVIDIA’s GF900M GT discrete graphics solution.

If you’re worried about the dual screen sapping all the life out of your nine-cell battery, there’s no need because using the second screen is optional.

“We designed this [device] knowing that many may not need the extra screen at all times,” gScreen founder Gordon Stewart commented in a Gizmodo report.

Interested? Be ready to fork up at least $3,000 to own this first-of-its-kind laptop. 😉

Grand Theft Auto coming to iPhones?

0

Yes, an app will be created for the game but as to whether Apple approves the app? That is definitely another story more or less filled with lots of question marks.

Rockstar Games, the publishing label of Take-Two interactive Software, has announced it will be bringing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

“Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch,” Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games said. “We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive game play, on Apple’s new gaming platforms.”

The game, already available in Nintendo DS and is coming this fall on Sony’s PSP, is known for its tale of crime, corruption, and er – a good amount of violence.

“If the Grand Theft Auto developers have an interface that’s bad or if they try to slip a fast one in like they did in one version of the game that showed what I’d consider to be X-rated sex in the thing — and Apple finds it — they’ll block it,” Mike Disabato, senior analyst at the Burton Group, said.

So let’s all wish the guys at Rockstar Games a good amount of luck. Goodluck guys! 😉

Samsung to open app store in September

0

The Seoul, Korea-based company is following the footsteps of other handset makers and will be opening its Samsung Application Store in Italy, in the U.K, and France on September 14.

Samsung has a beta version of their app store available in Britain since February but now the company is ready to face competition head on and plans to make their app store available to more than 30 countries, including Spain and Germany.

The app store currently houses 300 apps, but Samsung assures customers that they will be having more than 2,000 apps by the end of the year.

But with a lot of competition already waiting for them, including Apple’s App Store, Nokia’s Ovi Store, Palm’s App Catalog, RIM’s App World for BlacBerry, and even LG’s Application Store, it’s definitely going to be a rough ride.

“Samsung has to carve out, in the eyes of the customer, the value of its mobile-application store, and that has yet to be determined,” IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said. “Plus, going into the holiday season, a lot of other companies are rolling out some very compelling devices.”

It’s a start though. And like they say, it’s better late than never. 🙂

Mouse hotel at the ISS

0

Yup, a team of six mice are living in style at the International Space station as part of an Italian study investigating the effects of bone loss in space.

Julie Robinson, NASA’s space station program scientist says this is the first time that rodents will be actually staying at the space station and for a period of three months nonetheless. Because although a good number mice have already taken joyrides into space (lucky them), they’ve all stayed aboard the shuttles and returning back to Earth with it. The longest time that a mouse stayed in space was about 30 days, cruising in space in an unmanned satellite.

The special experiment drawer where the mice will be checking in was delivered to the station by the astronauts aboard Discovery which docked late Sunday.

Referring to the cage, Joe Delai, Discovery’s payload manager says, “Basically, it’s a little hotel. They have a room and place to eat and sleep.”

What are the amenities the little space guests are enjoying?

“Each mouse is in its own little compartment,” Robinson told SPACE.com. “The compartments have screens around them so the mice can hold on with their feet so that they’re in control of their environment…so they’re not stressed out.”

The astronauts will be making sure that the mice experience a normal environment with a system that turns on lights to simulate day and night. The little critters will be getting room service too! They will be getting their food through automated systems which can be refilled when needed.

So why exactly are they up there? Three of the six mice have a special gene that combat osteoporosis, a condition that leads to bone loss.

If the mice with the special gene suffer less bone loss than those without, then compared to the control group (a similar group of six mice are being studied on Earth as control group), the results may lead to better treatment for osteoporosis on Earth. It can also help protect astronauts who routinely lose bone and muscle mass because of prolonged exposure to microgravity.

The space mice, along with Astronaut Nicole Stott who arrived at the space station on board the Discovery, will all be hitching a ride back to Earth aboard a different shuttle in November.

Apple receives a lawsuit…again

It seems like Apple’s been on the limelight a lot this month, and it’s not all about good stuff either. Investigations on their exploding products, on their application approval process, and now, several lawsuits make it on Apple’s problem list.

This latest lawsuit is not the first nor the second one filed against Apple, and their U.S. carrier AT&T about their MMS service.

Deborah Carr, filing in the Northern District of Ohio, says that she was led to believe that multimedia messaging was already on the iPhone. She says the public were given false impressions through “print and video advertisements…on television, the Internet, the radio, newspapers, and direct mailers” which all mention the availability of MMS on the device.

According to the lawsuit, customers of the smartphone were told that MMS would be enabled with the release of iPhone OS 3.0 which was on June 17, 2009.

So how can this be when during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on June 8, Apple and AT&T announced that MMS will be available to 29 carriers as soon as iPhone OS 3.0 is released, but will not be available until late summer for AT&T customers.

Probably because she didn’t pay attention that well? Oh wait, she did. Her lawsuit admits that she is aware of the notice in Apple’s website stating that support for MMS would be available from AT&T in late summer. However, suit says that the notice is a “mouseprint disclaimer” referring to the small font used.

So who do think should win?

Japan creates teddy bear robot nurse

I think all of us went through a phase in our childhood life when we wanted to carry our teddy everywhere and glued to our little bodies, day in and day out.

But don’t you think it’s a bit weird for an oversized, robotic teddy to be the one carrying you?

Apparently, the Japanese doesn’t think so.

State-run Riken research center have a created Riba, a robot nurse that can lift elderly patients from wheelchairs and beds. Promoters are calling it the world’s first robot to lift people in its arms.

Short for Robot for Interactive Body Assistance, Riba is a 400-pound robot can carry patients weighing up to 134 pounds in its foam-padded paws. He can recognize faces and voices, and can even respond to voice commands.

Ri-Man, a robot (that I assume looked like a man 😉 ) which Ri-ken developed in 2006, could only lift about 40 pounds and moved slower than Riba.

According to Riken, the cute face is designed to make Riba less imposing. Well, it makes sense actually. Why would some elderly person be afraid of a huge, 400-pound, shiny, white robot that looks like a smiling teddy bear? Really! 😀

Apple points to customers for exploding iPhones

0

Well, there you have it. After days of silence regarding the exploding iPhone and iPod incidents reported over U.K. and Europe, the phone maker finally speaks up.

And nope, they’re not taking the blame for their gadgets’ exploding tendencies either.

So what did they have to say?

“In all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone,” Alan Hely, a London-based spokesman for Apple Europe, told Bloomberg in an email. “There are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits.”

In short: it’s not their fault.

Well, this isn’t the end of our exploding Apple gadgets saga though. Investigations by France’s consumer protection agency are still ongoing and independent experts from U.S. are also still in the process of conducting further tests.

Stay tuned! 🙂
