After three launch delays, the Discovery space shuttle finally blasted off to space late Friday for a 13-day installation and delivery mission.

The space shuttle was originally scheduled for launch early Tuesday but bad weather and a fuel valve which failed to close caused a four-day delay.

To catch up with the International Space Station, the shuttle’s commander Col. Frederick W. Sturckow of the Marines and the shuttle’s pilot, Kevin A. Ford, a retired Air Force colonel, plan to carry out a series of rocket firings. Discovery is expected to dock at the space station at around 9 p.m. Sunday.

The shuttle’s mission includes installing a new 1,800-pound ammonia coolant system tank and delivering two research rackes, a freezer for experiment samples, a new carbon dioxide removal system, crew sleep station and uhm, a new treadmill. 😉

Three spacewalks are also scheduled during Discovery’s stay in the station.

A Discovery crew, Nicole P. Stott, will be replacing Col. Timothy L. Kopra who came to the station aboard Endeavour. She will be joining the space station crew as a flight engineer.

The shuttle is scheduled to undock on September 8 and is expected to land at the Kennedy Space Center two days later.

Dell to develop more mobile devices?

0

Yup, another pc maker is crossing over the mobile-phone side, and this time, its Dell.

A prototype mobile it developed with China Mobile was recently revealed by the company. However, neither has given any comments as to when the device will be released to the market.

Now, Dell says that it is willing to work with other carriers worldwide and make products with various screen sizes “to suit the needs of the carriers” it works with.

We’ll go and build products those carrier partners want to see,” Michael Dell, company founder and CEO said. “The [China Mobile] prototype … is one of those [products].”

There are no concrete details about the China Mobile device yet but rumors talk about a digital camera, 2G network support and a possible Android operating system.

Seems like Dell has lots of plans this year. Along with their already-existing netbooks and their soon-to-be mobile phones, company officials said they would also like to focus on “enterprise products” like servers and storage.

Dell and HP support Microsoft

0

Microsoft may not be able to sell two versions of the very popular word processing software after a federal jury ruled on Tuesday that the software violates a patent held by i4i Inc., a Toronto-based tech firm.

The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant has already filed an appeal for the court after a federal judge decided that the company could not sell its 2003 and 2007 versions of Microsoft word anymore.

Microsoft requested the court stay the injunction issued until an appeal can be heared.

According to a report in the The Wall Street Journal, the ruling does not require the company to retract the software already sold to customers, however the ruling calls for Microsoft to pay i4i Inc. $290 million worth of damages.

Hewlett-Packard and Dell, both fellow companies, have filed briefs in support of Microsoft. They are both in favor of a stay and both argued that their business would be affected.

Dell urges the Court to consider the serious adverse impact of an injunction of Word on Dell, other PC sellers, and the PC-using public in evaluating whether the injunction should stand,” Dell said in its brief.

HP’s brief also took the same note citing that the injunction would have an adverse impact on its business as well as on the customer.

0

Today, Microsoft released  an open source software developer kit that’ll make the lives of iPhone developers… uhm, at least those who want to build iPhone apps that can access Bing.

Using the kit, developers can create an app that searches Bing for Web info, news, videos, images and phonebook results. It can also be incorporated to apps for Macintosh computers.

There are already several apps that use Bing, but with this official SDK from Microsoft will make bring the search engine to more apps.

The default search engine for iPhone’s Safari browser, with an option to switch to Yahoo if they wish to.

Users who wants Bing have to type in the URL. This SDK eliminates that need.

Troubleshooting test for shuttle valve a success

0

There’s still a very good chance that Discovery will be launched tomorrow at 12:22 am following five launch pad tests Wednesday.

The fuel valve, which signaled a failure to close while the external fuel tank was being filled for launch late Tuesday, led to a 48-hour postponement to give engineers time to diagnose the problem.

The first launch attempt – scheduled early Tuesday – was postponed because of bad weather, the valve worked fine that time.

According to an online status report from NASA released Wednesday, the valve “opened and closed when commanded five different times with no issues.”

“Teams are now performing a pressure test of the propulsion system, and recording the leak rate of small amounts of liquid hydrogen,” the status report said.

The decision whether to continue with the launching on Friday will be done later today.

Keep those fingers crossed guys! 🙂

Motorola to launch I-SIM NFC Lite in Taiwan and China

0

Its not only Finland-based phone manufacturer Nokia that’s taking a stroll over the financial market.

Struggling mobile phone maker Motorola also seems to think this is a good idea too. The company has developed a new technology that can turn mobile phones into payment devices.

The I-SIM NFC (nearfield communication) Lite card is a small card that’s almost the same in size as a common mobile phone SIM card, but much thinner.

This card contains chips that can store and transmit info including credit card, debit card, subway card, frequent flyer and other membership card information.

According to T.K. Ng, general manager in the home and networks mobility division of Motorola in China, the good thing about this new technology is that a user doesn’t have to get anew SIM card, a new phone or a specially-designed card reader!

It’s made as a sticker that can be attached to a mobile phone SIM card, not adding that much thickness to the SIM card that it can still fit in the SIM card slot. This card also is designed to work with standard card readers, such as that used by stores and those card readers on buses, subways, trains, etc.

The I-SIM NFC is planned to be first launched in Taiwan and then China. Ng said he hopes Taiwan can be the testing ground for the card because people are already used to using a variety of cards in making payments. A lot of stores in the country also carry card readers too, including 7-Eleven.

Court orders Mininova to take down files

0

The fight against illegal file-sharing and downloading is getting more and more serious by the day.

A civil court on Wednesday has ordered Minninova, one of the largest index of BitTorrent files, to remove all the files on its servers that point to copyrighted works. The removal is to be done within three months, or it will face a fine of up to 5 million euro ($7.16 million).

The Dutch-based Strichting Brein, an organization funded by copyright-holder groups, was the one who started the petition saying that the BitTorrent index site encourages users to infringe copyrights and gains profit from infringement by allowing ads on their site.

According to Wednesday’s ruling, the Utrecht District Court “didn’t agree with Mininova’s argument that it was impossible for it to find and remove torrents that point to copyrighted materials”.

Before it was ordered to remove all their files, Mininova has already started removing some files. This action however, wasn’t good enough for the court saying that the site should assume that all commercial media works are copyrighted.

Mininova responded by saying that they are considering an appeal.

YouTube is spreading their wealth

0

Amateur videos never earned in the video posting site before. Even if your video has reached millions of views, YouTube wouldn’t even consider sharing a cent with you.

All that’s changed now that they’ve extended their YouTube Partnership Program. In a their blog, the company says that it’s time to “recognize the role popular one-off videos play on YouTube, and have helped many people earn thousands of dollars a month as their videos went viral and endured over time.”

The YouTube Partnership Program before was offered only to popular users who regularly produce videos that reach a wide audience. The newly extended program now allows individual users to get a chance of earning too, based on the number of views the video has generated as well as its compliance with the site’s terms of service.

Once YouTube decides that your video is eligible, they will notify you through an email. The site then will create revenue for you by selling advertising against your video. Your earnings will be paid into your Google AdSense account each month.

Unfortunately, this option is available for users in the U.S. for now. Don’t worry too much though, because YouTube says they’re hoping to have this feature internationally too.

Daily Reader from Sony partners with OverDrive

0

It seems that Sony’s taking this rivalry on Amazon’s Kindle really seriously.

Yesterday, they unveiled the Daily Reader, the company’s first ever wireless ebook reader that will hit the stores in December of this year.

Now, they’ve announced that they are partnering with OverDrive, a global distributor of electronic books and audiobooks. This partnership will allow Daily Reader users with a valid library card to download library books directly to the eBook reader. Users can browse a library’s Website and checkout a book.

The best part is that the book expires at the end of the rental period so that users will not have to think about late fees.

Amazon’s Kindle also allows users to check out ebooks from libraries, some of its users are confused by how the content can be downloaded.

Another service that Sony is offering future users of their 3G-capable ebook readers is access to the Google Books Project, giving them a choice of over a million books available in the public domain.
