LG smartphones to run on Windows software

0

LG Electronics announced Thursday that it will be launching three new smartphones in the coming weeks.

The new smartphones will be running on Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, the first that LG phones will be using Windows software from Microsoft Corp.

The third-largest mobile phone maker signed a deal with Microsoft in February, making Windows Mobile LG’s primary smartphone platform. LG has big plans this year too! The company is planning to launch 13 new Windows smartphones by the end of 2010.

However, although Windows Mobile may be its primary OS, LG isn’t closing its doors to developing phones with other software. The company is also developing models based on Google’s Android software.

Sony to launch 3D Televisions in 2010

0

Three-dimensional (3D) experience won’t be limited to theaters anymore as Sony, the Japanese consumer electronics maker, announced that they will be launching 3D-capable TVs by next year.

“A variety of issues still need to be addressed, but the 3D train is on the track and Sony is ready to drive it home,” Sony SEO Howard Stringer told delegates at the IFA technology conference held in Berlin.

Sony also mentions that they hope to make its other devices support 3D content soon too. These include the VAIO laptops, PlayStation 3 games consoles and its Blu-ray high def DVD players.

Other companies are also following suit. LG and Samsung have already outlined their plans to make their own 3D TVs too. Satellite broadcaster Sky has also confirmed that it’ll be launching a 3D channel by 2010.

PCWorld reports that to be able to experience the “3D-ness” of the television, viewers will need to wear special glasses that have filters in them. These filters will switch on and off at high speed, matching the image from the screen.

The 3D-compatible TVs will be launched as part of the company’s Bravia LCD range. Prices for the TVs however, were not disclosed yet but I bet it won’t be easy on the pocket.

And they’re buying not one, not two, not even three!

The U.S Army TACOM Contracting Center are placing an order for 489 iRobot PackBot 510 with FasTac Kit robots by March 31 of next year.

iRobot, also known for its Roomba vacuums, announced on Tuesday that they received an order for $35.3M-worth of robots that’ll help soldiers survey and evaluate dangerous areas. This order is said to be a part of an overall contract that’s worth $286 million.

“This order is truly a significant milestone for iRobot,” Joe Dyer, president of iRobot government and industrial robots unit, said in a statement.

“Not only is it the single largest order we have ever received from the military, but it also proves that there is strong and continuing support for our PackBot FasTac platform that was introduced just last year.”

So what exactly does the PackBot 510 with FasTac kit do?

With the soldiers controlling it through a laptop with a game-style controller from a safe distance, the robot can survey and evaluate dangerous conditions and then clear those areas for the soldiers to proceed. The PackBot 510 has a compact arm and gripper that can pick up suspicious objects so soldiers can examine them.

The robot can move up to 5.8 mph and can last up to four hours. These robots are already being used in lraq to dispose roadside bombs and other hazards.

Overloaded servers caused Google outage

0

According to Google’s official Gmail blog, the culprits behind Gmail being offline for more than an hour on Tuesday were overloaded servers.

“As we now know, we had slightly underestimated the load which some recent changes placed on the request routers,” Google’s Ben Treynor wrote on the Gmail blog. “At about 12:30 p.m. Pacific a few of the request routers became overloaded and in effect told the rest of the system “stop sending us traffic, we’re too slow!”. This transferred the load onto the remaining request routers, causing a few more of them also to become overloaded, and within minutes nearly all of the request routers were overloaded.”

Engineers of the email service were quick to respond though. After being alerted of the problem, they quickly went to work and brought additional request routers online.

And they’re not stopping there too. Over the next few weeks, the company will be implementing changes to make their routers work better and further improve reliability, Treynor said.

“We’ve turned our full attention to helping ensure this kind of event doesn’t happen again,” he assured the public.

All hands on deck guys! 😉

EBay is selling Skype

Yup, after paying a HUGE amount for the Internet phone company, EBay Inc. is now letting go of their extravagant purchase.

The famous online auction company announced Tuesday that they will be keeping 35% of Skype while 65% will be sold to a group of private investors. This will likely be finalized later this year.

The deal includes $1.9 billion in cash and then $124 million to be paid later. All in all, Skype is valued at just $2.75 billion.

I’m emphasizing the just there because EBay has paid a whopping $3.12 billion for Skype when it bought the Internet phone company four years ago with plans of integrating it in their auction site. This did not materialize though because EBay officials admit that the technologies were in fact, incompatible.

John Donahoe, EBay chief executive, says that selling Skype will allow it to focus on growing the online voice and video communication business.

Mosaic’s co-creator Marc Andreessen was among the investors announced Tuesday. Other investors include the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and European venture capital firm Index Ventures.

Privacy groups: We’ve had enough!

0

Go to a website about gadgets and you’ll likely find ads selling cameras, cellphones, laptops, and a slew of other gadgets. This is called behavioral advertising – a marketing strategy that gathers data from online activities of consumers to determine what their interests are then show ads that cater to these interests.

As of present, Internet companies are practicing self-regulation regarding this type of advertising because there are less rules to follow and it is much cheaper than complying to government requirements.

Privacy and consumer groups however, do not want this anymore and want Congress to take action and are urging them to draft a new legislation regarding consumer privacy.

The privacy and consumer groups include: Center for Digital Democracy, Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, Consumer Watchdog, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Privacy Lives, Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, Privacy Times, U.S. Public Interest Research Group, and The World Privacy Forum. The ten groups drafted 13 pages of proposed changes, InfoWeek reports.

Although Google is very much known for their ads, it is not the company that the groups are worried about. InfoWeek reports that companies with “controversial practices” like NebuAd and Phorm are the ones that concern the groups.

The representatives of the group however stressed out that they do not want to “kill” behavioral advertising. They just want to safeguard the consumers.

“The basic idea behind all of these documents is we want consumers to be able to take advantage of all of these technologies without these technologies taking advantage of the consumers,” Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, said. “And right now that balance is not there.”

Apple approves Vonage VOIP app

Apple has finally given Vonage the green light for its voice over Internet Protocol app for iPhone and iPod Touch after announcing last week that they are holding up Vonage’s request because of technical issues.

Vonage announced the approval on Tuesday and said that beta tests for the app are now ongoing. Availability of the app for the public will be announced soon too.

However, the company is still keeping mum about what the app will actually do for “competitive reasons”.

Hmmmn, I’m wondering if this means they will also be approving the Google Voice app soon. 🙂

0

Residents of the Asian country need not worry about keeping up with cyberspace as Singapore’s free Wi-Fi has gotten a speed boost this week.

Wireless@SG went from 512Kbps to 1Mbps making it much faster and accessible for internet lovers. Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the government agency that oversees the service, announced in a statement that they also plan to add new features to the network.

The new features include location-based services and secure automated login capabilities. These will be added by January of next year. Advertising, payments and facility monitoring will soon be added to the service too, although the IDC did not give any timeframe.

Wireless@SG has already 7,500 hotspots which are managed by three operators: iCell Network, Singapore Telecommunications, and Qmax Communcation. The Wi-Fi service started in 2006 and will remain free until March 2013.

CellStories to rival Kindle and Sony Reader?

0

Launched on Tuesday, CellStories.net is a Web site that posts literature everyday for free which can be accessed by any cellphone with an internet connection.

CellStories posts will include short stories, personal essays as well as narrative journalism and creative nonfiction.

Dan Sinker, a teacher of journalism at Columbia College Chicago and creator of CellStories.net made sure that the Web site is accessible and simple enough to be able to work in any handheld mobile device.

“Anyone that thinks something like the Sony Reader or the Kindle is a device that’s going to be around in even three years is delusional,” Sinker told Reuters. “We’re past the point where people say ‘I want one device to do one thing.’”

“CellStories isn’t the thing that replaces (the Kindle) but … the question of how do we read on computing devices was answered when phones like the iPhone came out,” he added.

The website is beneficial to authors as well.

Although contributing authors will not be paid “as the site is not yet designed to make money”, Sinker said readers new readers can view their work and then seek out and buy their published work. He also said that he has agreements with some small independent publishers that are willing to feature the site’s contributing authors.

Major League Baseball fans have also something to be happy for.

Previously, users of At Bat 2009, Major League Baseball’s iPhone app, had the option to watch up to two live games on their iPhone or iPod touch everyday for free.

Now, with the release of the Version 1.4 update, developer MLB.com gives users the choice of watching all games live – for a fee. Fans can now watch any of the other games (Blackout and other restrictions apply) scheduled for that evening for 99 cents, aside from the two free games of course.

MLB.com At Bat 2009 updated version still offers its users live audio without any blackout restrictions as well as real-time video highlights, updated scores, short-form video recaps, and MLB.com Gameday functionality.

This in-app purchasing is made possible through Apple’s iPhone SDK for version 3.0 of their phone’s OS.

MLB.com At Bat 2009 is available for $9.99 and requires the iPhone 3.0 update.
