Solar-powered ebook reader from LG unveiled

Drained your batteries? Don’t fret. Just take you ebook reader outside – if the sun’s up, that is.

Developed to fit the 6-inch display panel for the ebook reader currently produced by the company, LG Display unveiled the thin-film solar cell prototype that’s thinner than a credit card.

The solar cell measures 10 centimeters in width and length and weighs just 20 grams. It was produced by placing electrode in a glass or plastic substrate. By exposing the cell four to five hours in the sun, you’ll get an additional day’s worth of reading time.

“E-books are attracting a lot of attention because they offer the advantage of storing thousands of books’ worth of contents in an easy-to-carry device. The idea of e-book combined with solar cell will offer users the added benefit of longer usage. We will continue to provide users with enhanced convenience and value to solidify our lead in next-generation, environmentally friendly products,” Mr. Ki Yong Kim, head of the Solar Cell Office at LG Display, said.

The prototype was showcased during the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2009 in KINTEX, Gyenggi, Korea which run from October 12 to 16.

Google Docs launches Shared Folders

This much-requested feature on Google Docs has finally been granted by Google.

Announced today, Google Docs now includes shared folders. With this in place, users can share any file placed in a folder eliminating the need to set-up sharing privileges for each individual file.

“Once you’ve shared a folder, all of the items in the folder will be accessible to the group. You can also add someone to an existing shared folder to give them access to all of the folder’s content,” Google Docs Product Manager Vijay Bangaru, explains in a blog post. “Likewise, each item you add to the folder will be automatically shared. Just like with sharing documents, you can specify edit and view-only access for a folder.”

The folders can contain different files such as Docs, Spreadsheets or Presentation files.

In addition to shared folders, Google Docs also added the multiple upload feature. Now, users can upload a number of files at the same time, with each file’s progress easily viewable.

Neil Gaiman to publish audiobook based on Tweets

Yup, you got that right.

Popular science fiction writer Neil Gaiman is starting a project with a thousand tweets provided by Twitter users and compiling them to create an audiobook.

The first line will be tweeted at midnight EDT Monday and can be found at http://twitter.com/BBCAA. Others who want their tweets to be included can also direct their tweets to “#bbcawdio.”

“When roughly 1,000 tweets are logged, we’ll edit the contributions and compile a script, then head into the studio to record and produce the audiobook,” the BBC Audiobooks America Blog said. “The final audiobook will be downloadable free on our Web site and also available as a digital download at iTunes and other audiobook retailers.”

Uhmm, I’m not sure what this will result to, but considering the mishmash of 140-character ideas of a thousand people? I’m pretty sure this’ll be interesting. 😉

Kudos to Mr. Neil Gaiman for cooking up such a unique idea! 🙂

HTC-Hero now on Sprint

Sprint-HTCSprint has finally joined the Android market and has officially added the HTC Hero to their list of phones.

The company’s first Android-based smartphone is now available for purchase on the Sprint website and the Sprint stores. It will also soon be available in Best Buy. Users will have to pay $180 with a two-year service agreement and after a $100 mail-in rebate.

The Sprint version has some differences on the European version though. Instead of having the “chin”, the Hero has a rounded tablet shape. It also lacks a hardware keyboard.

Specs of the mobile phone include a 3.2-inch capacitive AM-OLED multi-touchscreen, an 800 MHz processor, an optical joystick and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Users get the standard Google apps and other popular applications such as Twitter, MySpace Mobile, ShopSavvy and the carrier’s Sprint TV. Not satisfied? You can also choose from over 10,000 applications accessible on the on-device store, the Android Market. 😉

Lufthansa and Panasonic to provide in-flight Internet

Long-haul business passengers of the German flag carrier won’t have to worry about missing text messages and emails.

Lufthansa and Panasonic has teamed up to provide passengers in-flight wireless Internet starting next year. Lufhansa boss Wolfgang Mayrhuber claimed that the Internet experience will be comparable “with those available at powerful hotspots or upmarket hotels”.

According to Michael Lamberty, a spokesman from the carrier, prototypes will be tested by the end of the year and by mid-2010, 50 long-haul planes will be offering the service. Aside from being able to use the Internet, Lamberty said passengers will also now be able to send text messages via mobile phones.

Lufthansa offered a similar service before but it wasn’t very well accepted so the company withdrew it by the end of 2006. Now, it seems like they are willing to test the waters again and with the popularity (not to mention necessity) of being connected all the time, who knows? They might just succeed this time. 🙂

New mobile design from Giorgio Armani

Stylish executives needs stylish phones – at least that’s what Giorgio Armani has in mind when he designed this 700-euro mobile phone for Samsung.

Launched today, the sleek Armani-Samsung smartphone comes with the new Windows Mobile 6.5 which was launched just this week.

The phone has a touchscreen and a slide-out full QWERTY keypad. It also includes a video player, GPS navigation , video player, can open Word and Excel documents, and be synchronized over the Internet.

With bronze detailing, the design was created to “coordinate perfectly with Giorgio Armani suits” known for their muted colors and elegant lines.

Founding designer Giorgio Armani, 75, was present at the event but did not speak at the presentation. He said in a statement however, that his aim was to create a phone “perfect for today’s managers”.

Samsung executive Won-Pyo Hong and Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer were also present in the launching.

Ballmer, wearing a tie signed by Armani, said that Microsoft’s partnership with Samsung and the Italian designer was “a unique thing” and his company doesn’t have plans of working with other fashion designers.

Adobe brings Photoshop to iPhones

I bet there’s tons of people who’d be raising their hands if I was asking a roomful of people. Photoshop has indeed built its reputation as a one of the best image-retouching and editing software. Heck, some even use the word “photoshop” as a verb. 😉

So anyway, fans of the Photoshop will surely be rejoicing Adobe’s photo editing tool becomes mobile and debuts with an iPhone app today.

The free (yup, it is) app allows iPhone users to crop, rotate or change the exposure on the iPhone photos. Although the features are very limited when compared to the full version Photoshop in computers, the app isn’t at all bad.

Edited pictures can be saved on the iPhone or you can directly upload them to your account at Photoshop.com. 🙂

YouTube celebrates one billion views a day

In the third anniversary of its acquisition by Google, YouTube’s CEO announced that it has been streaming a billion videos a day.

“Today, I’m proud to say that we have been serving well over a billion views a day on YouTube. This is great moment in our short history and we owe it all to you,” CEO and co-founder Chad Hurley wrote in the blog.

Hurley also talked about the site’s evolution, from just a site catering to short, armature home videos done by people for fun, to the longer, better-quality videos and even earning profit for videos posted.

“Three years after the acquisition, our platform and our business continue to grow and evolve. We are still committed to the same principles that informed the site early on, but we knows things have changed. As bandwidth has increased, so has our video quality. As we’ve started to see demand for longer, full-length content, we’ve brought more shows and movies to the site. There are now more ways than ever to make and consume content, and more of you are looking to turn your hobby into a real business.”

Aware of the all the competition they have, Hurley also assured its users that they have their hands full in keeping up with the demand for better consumer experience.

“We’re working hard to keep up with the fast pace of technology to bring you everything you would expect from the world’s largest video site: better quality; a full spectrum of choices and tools for users, partners and advertisers; and ways to make the YouTube experience your own anywhere, anytime,” he wrote.

“Rock Band” soon on iPhones

Electronic Arts (EA) announced today that “Rock Band”, a popular music video game, will soon make its way to Apple’s App Store.

Users have four options to choose from. They can play solo, or with at as many as three people together using Bluetooth. Games can also jump into Quickplay for casual jam sessions or they can take it on the road in Tour Mode.

Available by the end of this month, the app will debut with song’s from the awesome bands including Smashing Pumpkins, Lynyrd Skynyrd ,the Beastie Boys, Blink 183, the Pixies and Foo Fighters.

“Start out playing in grungy dives and work all the way up to stadium-rock stardom,” EA Mobile said at its website.

Want more songs? Users can also purchase additional tracks through the in-game music store.

Windows 7 Short update:

Marked your calendars yet?

With just over 12 days left before Windows 7 is launched, Windows wants to know if you’ve pre-ordered yet and what you ordered.

In February of this year, Windows launched a survey asking respondents which Windows 7 were they going to purchase when it comes out.

With a total of 6,218 voters, 2,912 voted to purchase Windows 7 Ultimate while buyers for Windows 7 Home Premium came in second with 1,485 votes.

And out of all the voters, 444 said they will not be purchasing the new OS from Windows.

But February was six months ago and a lot of things have happened: news came out, other OS came out, bugs were discovered, some fixed, etc. Think all of these affected the choice of probable customers (including you)?
