Apple keyboards vulnerable to attacks

0

It seems that will be no rest in store for the Apple guys in the coming days.

Just last week, Apple had their hands full in fixing a critical bug that made iPhones susceptible to attacks carried out via SMS. Now, MacWorld reports another Apple device vulnerable to attacks. This time, its their keyboards.

The vulnerability was discovered by K. Chen, and he gave a talk about it at the Blackhat. He demonstrated that a malware that keeps track of what users type – popularly known as a keylogging application – could be installed in the keyboards, via their firmware. Hackers and scammers use this to retrieve passwords entered by a user.

Apple’s keyboards (both laptop and iMac keyboards) has about 8K of flash memory, and 256 bytes of working ram. This is enough space for a keylogging program to be installed.

And the worst part is, the keylogger is virtually undetectable even with the use of malware-scanning tools since the malware is not in the hard drive.

This is clearly a huge security problem that Apple needs to address; otherwise, I won’t be surprised to find more news about scams and hacks done through this vulnerability, splattered on the Web.

Tweets from the grave: John Quincy Adams Twittering

0

Starting today, John Quincy Adams will be posting Tweets.

Well, in the broadest sense of the word – er, phrase.

The Massachuetts Historical Society has announced that they will be posting excerpts from John Quincy Adams’ line-a-diary as tweets. The diary chronicles Adam’s voyage to Russia which started August 5, 1909, exactly 200 years ago. It also accounts his ensuing work as the first American ambassador to Russia.

And get this: Adams’ journal entries were written in nearly perfect 140-character quips, perfect for Tweeting.

Jeremy Dibbel, a librarian with the Massachusetts Historical society wrote in a blog post that they will be posting Adams’ exact words and may even add maps showing his location which is possible through the latitude and longitude readers he included in his journal. They will also post links to longer diary entries and other info about him.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to test out some new technological tools and to create a transcription of the line-a-day diaries, which will be useful for future projects, as well,” Dibbell wrote. “We certainly hope others will find [Adams’] journey as fascinating as we do, so please follow him on Twitter.”  His Twitter page is here.

Oh and if you’re still scratching your heads and thinking is this man, uhm, does America’s sixth president ring a bell?

Apart from being the son of the nation’s second president, John Adams, John Quincy Adams was also a U.S. senator and a successful secretary of state and the nation’s sixth president.

Pope Benedict releases his first album

0

This is not the first time that a pope releases an album. Pope Benedict’s predecessor, Pope John Paul II released the album “Abba Pater” on Sony Classical Music ten years ago.

Now, it’s Pope Benedict’s turn. He will be singing litanies and chats, and reciting passages and prayers in Latin, Italian, Portuguese, French and German. The Alma Mater will be released on November 30 under Geffen Records, the same label that signed up Ashlee Simpson and Snoop Dog.

The Pope’s album will feature the backing vocals of The Choir of the Philharmonic Academy of Rome blended with modern classicist recordings by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Some proceeds of the album will be dedicated to the support of music education for poor children all over the world.

So it is odd that a religious record is signed up in a mainstream music label? Geffen Record’s president, Colin Barlow, doesn’t think so.

“I think in this day and age, as the public are, as I am, people are fascinated by all kinds of music. We’re not fed on one type of music,” he told Reuters Television.

Hmmmn, did you know that Pope Benedict also has a Web site, his own YouTube channel and an account in Facebook? Pretty cool huh? 🙂

Pocket-size electronic book reader from Sony

0

It seems that the market for electronic readers is becoming more and more lucrative that companies are coming up with more devices dedicated to these ink-less books.

Sony just unveiled the newest addition to their electronic family: the pocket-size electronic book reader. And get this, its $100 cheaper than the Amazon’s Kindle, that Sony already touted it as the “most affordable dedicated reading device on the market.”

The Sony Reader Pocket Edition has an internal memory that can hold about 350 ebooks and sells for $199. Its five-inch screen is smaller than the Kindle’s and other Sony reader models.

So why is this cheaper? This model won’t play digital music files and will not have an expansion slot for a memory card.

This device is expected to be released by the end of the month. Color choices for the Sony Reader Pocket Edition include blue, red and silver.

Another reader that is soon to be available from the company is the a $299 touch-screen model to replace its existing $350 touch-screen PRS-700 which will be discontinued. Users can write notes and highlight texts with a finger or using the stylus. This new model also comes with a built-in dictionary.

The last announcement that Sony Corp. made is a price cut of their bestselling and new-release titles sold at their website from $11.99 to $9.99, matching Amazon’s ebook price. Talk about stiff competition huh?

Sony’s ebook store currently has more than 100,000 titles and 1,000,000 free public domain ebooks from Google.

An app for credit card processing

0

Here’s an app for business establishments.

Yesterday, Intuit released the free app GoPayment, designed to help businesses process credit card payments.

How does it work?

The app lets the user enter the amount to be charged and the customer’s credit card number. After the transaction is processed, the user can then email or text-message the receipt to the customer. Pretty convenient eh?

The transaction info is available from Intuit’s Merchant Service center.

The app that can be downloaded to an iPhone or iPod Touch is free but availing of the service is not. Those who will download the app need to create an Intuit GoPayment merchant account first. The account costs $20 per month and has a $60 setup fee. There’s also a transaction fee.

Intuit is the maker of Quickbooks, an accounting software that provide small business and accountancy software information and financial services. Those with GoPayment merchant accounts can synchronize the transactions with Quickbooks too.

Twitter seeks help from Google

0

With the increase in malware attacks targeted at Twitter and its users, the no. 1 micro-blogging Web site turns to Google for help.

Twitter is now using Google’s Safe Browsing API to block links to known malicious Web sites.

It was first noticed by F-Secure’s Mikko Hyponen yesterday who posted an article about it in F-Secure’s Web site. If a tweet has a link that is blacklisted by Google, Twitter disallows it by posting a notice that the tweet “contained a URL to a known malware site”.

Google’s Safe Browsing API is an application programming interface that enables client applications to check URLs against Google’s constantly updated blacklists of suspected phishing and malware pages. Through this API, Twitter can prevent users from posting links that lead to malware-infested pages.

Over the last six months, Twitter has been the target of a number of Trojan, worm and spam attacks as well as high-profile account hijacking.

Exploding iPod Touch story hushed by Apple?

0

So an iPod Touch burst into flames, big deal? Of course!

And that’s what Apple seems to think too. So what do they do? They give the victims people involved, a gagging order.

The Times newspaper reports that a father and his 11-year old daughter received a letter from Apple stating that the company is willing to give a refund only if they will sign a settlement form and shut up about the incident. And the worst part? Apple can do a legal action against them if they didn’t keep the incident confidential.

Ken Stanborough from Liverpool and his daughter Ellie, explains that the device burst into flames after it was dropped. They then took the device back to Argos where they bought the iPod. Later on, they were contacted by Apple through a letter.

In the correspondence, the company denies any liability but offers a refund for the £162 ($275) iPod. In addition, the letter also states that Standborough is to agree that he “keep the terms and existence of this settlement agreement completely confidential” and breaches of confidentiality “may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties.”

“I thought it was a very disturbing letter,” Stanborough told the Times. “They’re putting a life sentence on myself, my daughter and Ellie’s mum, not to say anything to anyone. If we inadvertently did say anything, no matter what, they would take litigation against us. I thought that was absolutely appalling. We didn’t ask for compensation, we just asked for our money back.”

An Apple spokesman told the Times that they cannot comment on the issue as they have yet to look at the damaged iPod.

We’ll just have to wait then, wont we? 😉
