Who doesn’t know Mickey Mouse? The iconic Walt Disney character has become a household name known to many as cute, happy-go-lucky mouse on different adventures.

What others didn’t know, or forgot, is that the mischievous mouse started out as badly-behaved critter (still in a slightly good way though 😉 ) in 1928. Warren Spector, a best-known video game designer, is gonna show you that.

“I wanted to remind Mickey that it’s okay to be mischievous and badly-behaved. For so many years, he hasn’t been allowed to do anything remotely mischievous. But if you go back to those early cartoons, he was very badly behaved, and we’ve got to let him get back to that,” Spector said in an interview with CNet.

“Mickey touches everybody, and none of us will ever meet a human being who doesn’t know about this character.”

Disney’s Epic Mickey is an adventure-platforming game which will be distributed exclusively for Nintendo’s Wii. The story, according to CNet News, revolves around a world created by the sorcerer from the The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. In this world, the forgotten Disney creations reside, including Oswald, Walt Disney’s earliest cartoon star. As what usually happens in the real world, Oswald becomes bitter as Mickey becomes more famous so when Mickey accidentally destroy Oswald’s comfort zone in his world, Oswald is making sure the little critter will face the consequences.

“It’s a game where we remind (people) that Mickey is a hero who solves problems by dynamically changing the world around him and deciding how to interact with the people and places and problems he encounters in this strange new world,” Spector said.

Disney’s Epic Mickey is set to be released in the fall of 2010.

Google Maps show non-existent town

A non-existent town called Argleton has been steadily creating a buzz and confusion among people – or at least those who use Google Maps.

Apparently, the service displays the village in the north of England, which in reality and in other maps, is not actually there.

Google has been receiving reports about this “error” for months but the little town hasn’t disappeared from Google Maps. How come?

Another confusing fact: Tele Atlas, who says it gives accurate information, provides the imaging and name data for Google Maps, and Google says it didn’t change anything.

Some people believe it could be a measure to prevent copyright violation. Prof. Danny Dorling, the president of the Society of Cartographers said that perhaps it could be an additional element to a map to hid secret locations.

“I grew up in the area and spotted on the map one day that it said ‘Argleton’,” he says. “But it’s just a farmer’s field close to the village hall and playing fields. I think a footpath goes across the field, but that’s all. The name ‘Argleton’ is similar to ‘Aughton’. Maybe someone made a mistake when keying in the name?” Mike Nolan, head of web services at Edge Hill University, wrote.

Whatever it is though, I hope Google provides an answer soon. 😉

Following the recent leak that found the Beatles’ digitally remastered catalog for sale at BlueBeat for 25 cents each, Apple Corps Ltd (the Beatles company) and EMI Music announced that the songs will be officially released on December 7 overseas and on December 8 in North America.

If you’re thinking of getting the tracks on iTunes though, you’re in for a disappointment because the songs will not be available in Apple’s music software. Instead, the digital versions of The Beatles songs can be purchased in limited-edition Beatles Stereo USB apples. Only 30,000 units will be sold worldwide.

“This unique, apple-shaped USB drive is loaded with the re-mastered audio for The Beatles’ 14 stereo titles, as well as all of the re-mastered CDs’ visual elements, including 13 mini-documentary films about the studio albums, replicated original UK art, rare photos and expanded liner notes,” according to the product description. The USB drives is priced at $279.99 each.

Rumors that the digital versions of the band’s hits could be coming in to iTunes have been going around for years, especially after Apple Corps. and Apple settled a trademark dispute in 2007. OAbviously they are still, just rumors as digital downloads of The Beatles songs hasn’t appeared in iTunes…yet. 😉

With just 552 apps when it was first opened less than two years ago, the App Store now boasts 100,000 apps according to an announcement by Apple.

“The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said. “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

The app store now has 21 categories with content being downloaded a total of “well over” two billion times and still the world’s most popular applications store.

The pace of development for the apps is also growing though. On its first year, developers were able to create 65,000 apps. In the last four months though, already 35,000 apps were added to the growing list.

“With 10,000 downloads a day, worldwide customer response to our I Am T-Pain App has exceeded our wildest expectations,” Jeff Smith, CEO of Smule, said. “The App Store has given us a unique opportunity to create and grow a very successful business, and we’re looking forward to an exciting future.”

Congratulations  to Apple and of course, the app developers. 🙂

Microsoft eliminates 800 more jobs

0

Completing the layoff Microsoft announced earlier this year, the company said that it is notifying around 800 workers set to be laid off.

“I can confirm we’re eliminating 800 jobs today,” said said Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos. “That’s part of the larger program we announced in January.”

He also said the positions being eliminated from Wednesday will affect staff internationally and in a range of business units.

In the beginning of this year, the software giant announced that it will be eliminating 5,000 jobs before the end of the next fiscal year. The latest cuts however, brings the total to approximately 5,800 jobs, Gellos said.

And its not over still. Even as Microsoft does some hiring in key areas, Gellos said there could also be additional cuts as the company regularly reviews its business and makes necessary adjustments.

A glimpse of blackra1n RC3 with blacksnOw

blackra1nRC3

Apple thought they can stop hackers from unlocking/jailbreaking its iPhones with the newest OS, but apparently, they still can’t.

iPhone-hacking guru George Hotz has given the web a sneak peak on the upcoming blacra1n RC3 with blacksnOw with the release of a teaser image.

I’ve you’ve been living under rock and didn’t know what blacra1n in, it’s one of today’s jailbreaking tools that unlocks both iPhones and iPod touches, thereby unleashing your unit to its full potential – at least that’s according to those owners who’ve tried it.

This latest version of blackra1n RC3 now includes Cydia and Rock installer packages. It will also include the much-awaited unlocking utility, the blacksn0w. The latter is the very first software that will enable users to unlock 3G/3GS running the stock 3.1.2 firmware from iTunes with 05.11.07 baseband (modem firmware).

iTunes says goodbye to Palm Pre…Again

0

Apple scores another point in their cat-and-mouse game with Palm.

Last Thursday, Apple released iTunes 9.0.3 update. Apparently, besides adding support for the new Apple TV 3.0 software and touting a new look for easier navigation, it also once again blocks the Palm Pre from automatically syncing into iTunes.

Since its release in July, Palm has manipulated the Pre to sync iTunes songs and other files. Apple didn’t like this arrangement though and released the iTunes 8.2.1  software update which “ no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players”, according to Apple’s support site.

Palm decided to fight back and  and released WebOS 1.1 for the Pre, their own software update. Among other things, the update allowed media synching with the 8.2.1 version of iTunes. In a blog announcing the release, Palm nonchalantly added at the end of the article: “Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right–you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).”

Palm also complained to the USB Implementers Forum that Apple was abusing the principle of open gadget connectivity, however the USB-IF decided to side with Apple and issued a warning against Palm.

Instead of backing out, Palm went ahead and released another software (webOS 1.2.1) that enabled media syncing with iTunes again.

So what will all of these come to? Who knows? You better keep posted though as this is getting more and more interesting.  🙂

BlueBeat sells Beatles tracks for 25 cents

BlueBeat, a California-based company, lets users purchase tracks for just 25 cents each through PayPal. It also lets users stream music for free.

It might be good news for music fans, but it isn’t for the Beatles or for their record company because BlueBeat is also selling The Beatles’ catalog as downloads. Why you ask? Coz the tracks are not even for sale yet.

A spokeswoman for the Beatles’ label, Apple Corp, Ltd., told Wired.com she doesn’t think BlueBeat has any permission to sell these tracks.

The Telegraph reports that a spokesperson from EMI, which with Apple Corp distributes the band’s music, said that it had not given its permission to be sold and was “looking into” the situation.

Media Rights Technologies (MRT), owner of BlueBeat, has not responded to any inquiries yet.

In the site’s Terms of Use however, the company pretty much makes it clear what they stand for.

If you believe in good faith that materials hosted by BlueBeat infringe your copyright (for example, materials posted by BlueBeat on one of our Forums), you (or your agent) may send us a notice requesting that the material be removed, or access to it blocked.

We suggest that you consult your legal advisor before filing a notice or counter-notice. Also, be aware that there can be penalties for false claims under the DMCA.

In other words, we’re going to sell what we want for however much we want. If you have a problem with it, file a DMCA takedown notice. But you’d better have a good lawyer, because otherwise you’re going to be in big trouble.

Orange releases iPhone tariffs

logo_orangeFrench-owned company Orange will start offering the iPhone 3G and 3GS starting November 10 – a day after O2’s two-year exclusive deal ends.

Those expecting to get a much-cheaper deal compared to O2 is in for a disappointment as the pricing is basically similar with the once-exclusive UK retailer of iPhone.

Orange will offer a 24-month contract with 600 voice minutes and 500 texts for £34.26 monthly per month. The iPhone itself will cost cost £87 for a 16GB device or £175 for the 32GB device.  Orange however, will be imposing a 700MB-per-month limit of data usage while O2 doesn’t

“Since we announced the iPhone on Orange we have already seen more than a quarter of a million customers register their interest on our website,” Tom Alexander, head of Orange UK, said.

Vodafone, another UK carrier, also announced their plans of offering the iPhone at the same time as Orange did. Vodafone fans however will have to wait for 2010 before it becomes available.
