Sony recalls 69,000 adapters due to short-circuit risk

0

It seems that there’s no end for Sony’s power problems on their Vaio.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant announced that it is recalling 69, 000 Vaio AC adapters for risks of short-circuiting.

The adapters on the recall list include models VGP-AC19V17, VGC-LT, VGC-JS240, VGC-JS250, VGC-JS270 and VGC-JS290. Sony will also be recalling two notebook docking stations, the VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1.

According to Sony, the AC adapters may short-circuit and cause an electric shock because insulation inside the adapter can fail over time. Although the company received only four related complaints – all of which did not result to any injury in the US – Sony is not taking any chances.

Despite its seemingly huge number, this problem is somewhat tamer to what the company has had to encounter before.

In 2006, Sony had to recall 9.6 million batteries and in September 2008, the company had to recall 438, 00 Vaio laptops due to overheating concerns. The latest was in October 2008 where the company had to again, recall 100,000 batteries.

For more information on the recall, you can visit Sony’s support site here or call Sony at (877) 361-4481.

Verizon’s Droid available next week

0

droid_fron_smThe much-anticipated challenger of the iPhone is set to be available on the market on November 6 for $199.99 after a rebate with a two-year contract with Verizon.

Although very much different from the iPhone in terms of appearance – it’s thicker and lacks iPhone’s curves, the Droid is shaking up a storm in the smartphone arena.

Along with its virtual keyboard with tactile feedback, the Droid also features a full slide-out keyboard. It also features a 5-megapixal camera, a tiny flash and a voice-activated search that brings up both contacts and location-based Google search results (pretty cool huh?).  Motorola also claims a 6.4-hour talk time on a single battery charge – longer than the iPhone’s five hours.

The Droid will run on Google’s Android 2.0, the latest version of the system. The search giant also introduced in this smartphone its new mapping software that that calls out turn-by-turn directions while providing a variety of visual guides.

Throwing its largest marketing campaign ever behind the Droid, Verizon is indeed serious in challenging the iPhone and AT&T’s position in the smartphone market.

“Apple revolutionized the industry,” and the smart phone industry needed time to collect itself and figure out its next move, John Stratton, Verizon’s chief marketing officer, said at a launch event in New York.

Facebook revises privacy policy

0

Today, the number-one social networking site announced a revamp of their current privacy policy, making it “clearer and more comprehensive”. The changes were made, in part, to improve its relationship with the Canada’s privacy commissioner.

“In this revision, we’re fulfilling our commitment to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to update our privacy policy to better describe a number of practices,” Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s head of communications, wrote on the site’s official blog.

“Specifically, we’ve included sections that further explain the privacy setting you can choose to make your content viewable by everyone, the difference between de-activating and deleting your account, and the process of memorializing an account once we’ve received a report that the account holder is deceased.”

The proposed policy also provided details on advertising in the site such as making the “the ads you see on Facebook relevant and interesting” and “anonymized” advertising provided to advertisers.

In their effort to improve their transparency, the site’s privacy policy is available for users’ review and comments until noon Pacific time on November 5.

“This is the next step in our ongoing effort to run Facebook in an open and transparent way.”

On the Apple Tablet: Did New York Times slip?

4

On October 15 or 15, the New York Times’ Executive Editor, Bill Keller, gave a private speech during a meeting for the Time’s digital staff held at The Times Center in New York. In the speech, he made mention of an “Apple slate/Slate”. Could this be a confirmation to the much-rumored tablet’s existence?

The meeting was supposed to be off the record, but a video was made and given to Nieman Journalism Lab. It was posted on Vimeo on October 19. However, it was only on Sunday that Gawker picked out the reference for the tablet from Apple.

Keller was talking about the Times’ strategy for mobile devices. So what exactly was the speech?

“We need to figure out the right journalistic product to deliver to mobile platforms and devices,” Keller said. “I’m hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate, or whatever comes after that.”

So was Keller talking about an Apple slate – a reference to just the rumored tablet we all have been hearing about? Or was he talking about THE Apple Slate – an actual product currently under wraps?

Just last month, Gizmodo uncovered a juicy tidbit about the rumoured tablet. It said that Apple execs maybe in talk with the big guys from magazines, newspapers and textbook companies to distribute print media through the tablet, including The New York Times. So does this mean there really IS an Apple Slate?

Well, there isn’t much to do for now but wait for more info to come out. Let’s just hope it comes sooner than later coz I know lots of folks are dying to find out – including me.  😉

China Unicom to offer 3G service to compete with rivals

2

photos-hardware-01-20090608

China Unicom is finally set to launch the first official iPhone sales in the country this week. And with the biggest carrier in the world as their competition, as well as the 1 million gray-market iPhones already proliferating in China, the company is preparing for battle.

So how did they plan to do it?

Because unlocked iPhones and other high-end phones sold in China’s gray-market only use China Mobile’s 2G network (that uses GSM and GRPS standards), Apple’s official carrier in China for the iPhone will be offering China-developed 3G service to users of any handset that supports 3G, including those gray-market iPhones

I would like to stress out however, that despite China Unicom being the first to officially sell iPhone in China, its contract with Apple is not exclusive. Its main competition, China Mobile, has said last month that they are also in talks with Apple about distribution.

Another probable distributor of the iPhone in the country is Hon Hai Precision Industry (also known by the trade name Foxconn), a major contract manufacturer of Apple gadgets.

Netflix movie streaming soon on PS3s

There’s more to celebrate for PlayStation 3 fans!

Shortly after Sony PlayStation 3 was hailed last month’s top-selling video game console after three years, the guys from Sony are giving you a treat.

Sony Corp. and Netflix announced together today that starting next month, owners of PS3 will be able to stream movies and TV shows from Netflix to their TVs via the gaming console.

Users who have a Netflix subscription starting at $9 can access Netflix’s 17,000 collection of movies and TV shows for free. The company will be sending out special Blu-ray discs which the users will have to pop in their PS3s. The disk will access the internet and activate the Netflix system.

This recent partnership is a win-win situation for the two companies.

For Sony, they are staying true to their product’s slogan “It Only Does Everything”, making the PS3 more than just a gaming console. And with their new target market of both men and women between 18 to 49, this new service will definitely be a come-on for them.

“I think we always knew we made a significant investment in the PS3 and we were ahead of the time in terms of technology,” Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said. “But technology that was mystifying to the consumer three years ago is being coveted now.”

As for the DVD rental company, Netflix can now tap the 9 million PlayStation 3 users in the US alone and more than 25 million users worldwide, all potential new customers.  🙂
