Apple tablet to be launched in Spring 2010

0

Or at least that’s what an analyst says.

If you’re tired of hearing about this yet-to-be-seen but much talked-about Apple tablet (you read our first article on this here, and then here, here and oh yeah, here), too bad for you. As long as Apple keeps mum about this supposedly “new” gadget of theirs, the rumor mill is never gonna stop turning.

So anyway, in this new tidbit according to a research note from Oppenheimer, Apple is readying to launch a multi-touch tablet next year – around March or April. They said the company is set to release as much 1 million units per month.

Unlike other rumors, this one says the tablet will have a 10.1-inch multi-touch LCD screen.

“Our checks into Apple’s supply chain indicate that the manufacturing cogs for the tablet are creaking into action and should begin to hit a mass market stride in February,” Yair Reiner, an Oppenheimer analyst, wrote.

“The February ramp schedule suggests a late March or April commercial release, since Apple will need to build at least 5-6 weeks of inventory before going live.”

According to Reiner, this gadget will be challenging Kindle’s number one seat on the ebook market – or at least in the hearts of publishers. Compared to Kindle’s 70 percent cut to publishers with exclusive rights given to Amazon, Apple is offering the same cut but without requiring exclusivity.

“As innovative as it is, we believe the Kindle has disgruntled the publishing industry (book, newspaper, and magazine) by demanding exclusivity, disallowing advertising, and demanding a wolfish cut of revenue,” Reiner wrote. “The tablet is set to change that.”

Can’t wait for next year? Me either. 😉

Google launches Living Stories, teams up with two major papers

Today, Google launched Living Stories, an experimental new feature that is aimed to make your online reading take on a whole new level.

Teaming up with two media partners to start, the search giant gives users fresh news stories, editorials, updates and various multimedia that focuses on specific topics – all in one single page.

Each Living Story has a permanent URL with new stories and updates posted as it becomes available, making it easier for uses to keep track and follow. It also keeps track of each user’s activity, alerting them for updates they haven’t seen yet and graying out those that were already read. Each topic also has its own accessible timeline displaying historical view of the topic.

At present, Google has partnered with The New York Times and The Washington Post and they decide which topics appear on their own Living Story pages. Google however, has plans of creating open-source tools for other outlets to be given a chance to create their own Living Stories too.

According to the Times, if this experiment catches the fancy of people, it will give publishers another source of income as they can sell ads on their own pages. The NY Times is also very optimistic in this new partnership.

“It’s an experiment with a different way of telling stories,” Martin A. Nisenholtz, senior vice president for digital operations of The New York Times Company, said in a statement.

“I think in it, you can see the germ of something quite interesting.”

Facebook introduces new privacy settings

facebook_610x322

If you haven’t signed in to your Facebook account today, you probably haven’t seen this notification yet. Don’t worry though, because everyone – that’s more than 350 million members – is getting the same too and yes, you are required to do something about it sooner or later.

“We care so much about this that we will require people to go through it to get access to the service,” Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy told AFP.

“The idea is to evolve, to give users better control of with whom they share when they share.”

By this he means avoiding embarrassing (not to mention compromising) images and updates from your bosses, crushes, and all those people you want to impress. 🙂

With the new privacy tools, users can pre-determine who can access profile content and can also select privacy settings for each individual post using the lock icon next to “share” buttons on profile pages.

“Facebook has balanced more sharing with less of a chance people won’t realize who they are sharing with,” Future of Privacy Forum director Jules Polonetsky said of the Facebook privacy control change.

“No service or site has ever asked their users to go through this process; it is privacy by design.”

First enterprise SSD from Seagate introduced

0

SeagateSeagate’s first solid-state drive (SSD) is now available generally. Dubbed as the Pulsar, it will be the first of what will be a line of enterprise SSDs from the company.

According to iSupply, a technology research firm, despite the high memory price of SSDs in laptops making it harder to replace hard disk drives, it is still a growing market and it has been predicted that it will drive a sevenfold increase in market revenue this year to $883 million.

As to Seagate’s first SSD, it measures just 2.5-inch, has a SATA interface, is a single-level cell drive and is available with up to 200 GB of memory storage. At its peak performance, the Pulsar can execute up to 30,000 read input/output operations per second and 25,000 write IOPS. It can read/write data in an amazing 240 MB/s and 200 MB/s respectively.

With the SSD’s lower power usage, smaller size and faster input/output, vendors can probably expect to sell more of this new storage type in the coming years.

B&N’s Nook delayed for one week

0

Nook

Although Barnes & Noble is still keeping mum as to how many devices they are manufacturing, it seems very obvious to point out that it’s not just a measly number.

In a statement posted on the company’s Web site Sunday night, the book retailer says there will be a delay for the retail arrival of the Nook by one week – due of course, to high demand issue. The Nook will be hitting the stores in December 7 instead of the previously expected date of November 30.

The company has told Reuters on Sunday that there won’t be lot of stocks available in big stores when it becomes available next week.

“We expect to have them in our highest-volume stores on December 7th and in a very limited number,” Mary Ellen Keating, Barnes & Noble spokeswoman, told Reuters.

Those who pre-ordered their devices before November 20 will be receiving them before the holidays. Those who placed their orders after the said date will have to spend the holidays without the Nook in their hands, and expect to receive it sometime around January 4.

Announced in October, the Nook has been generating a huge interest (enough to cause them production delays :)) from consumers with its split-screen display, allowing for a black and white text display for the majority of the screen, and a smaller color display at the bottom used for control and navigation. Compared to the Kindle, the Nook also offers a microSD slot for memory expansion.

The Nook is being sold for $259.

Could there be a new iPhone on the works?

0

Probably.

Or least that’s what this public log siting could mean.

MacRumors.com reported that Pandav, an iPhone developer, has the “iPhone 3.1” on their app analytics radar screen. The site says Pandav “sported usage records” for the next generation iPhone for iBart, a free app guide for the San Francisco Bay area BART public transportation system.

Another red flag, possibly an evidence for the new iPhone is an article from the AppleInsider which reported a new job listing from Apple for a “software engineer to work on the iPhone Maps application”.

According to rumors surrounding the new iPhone, this next generation smartphone will pack in a multi-core processor that definitely improve the speed of application and internet performance.

Rumors also suggest that the release of the iPhone 3.1 is also the end of the exclusive deal between Apple and AT&T. This partnership has received its fair share of criticisms because of the latter’s spotty service.

eBay fined 2.5 million dollars for selling perfumes

0

eBay

If you’re thinking of heading out to eBay to purchase perfumes for your special someone this holiday season, better think again.

A French court has ordered popular online auction site eBay to pay 1.7 million euros (2.5 million dollars) to luxury goods maker Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH). The fine was for selling unauthorized perfumes.

According to Pierre Gode, LVMH administrator, the court ordered the payment after eBay violated an injunction banning them to sell LVMH brand perfumes like Kenzo, Givenchy, Christian Dior and Guerlain.

eBay hopes the ruling will be overturned, calling the injunction an abuse of “selective distribution”.

“Today’s outcome hurts consumers by preventing them from buying and selling authentic items online,” said Alex Von Schiermeister, director of eBay Europe.

“We believe that the higher courts will overturn this ruling and ensure that e-commerce companies such as eBay will continue to provide a platform for buyers and sellers to trade authentic goods,” he added.

In September, a French court also ordered eBay to pay 80,000 Euros to LVMH for selling fake versions of its branded perfumes.
