New movie search app from Google

If you’re one of the many who has no time to check out movie listings, and you own a smartphone, then life just got better for ya.

Google launched an upgrade today that adds a new movie search feature for iPhones, Palm WebOS or those Android-powered smartphones.

Searching for movies is now more efficient. Just go to google.com and search for “movies” and then click the “more movies link”. You are then presented with options including a list of the day’s movies or you can select movies by theaters.

For the list of the day’s movies, buttons are included for playing trailers, and other info are displayed including categories, movie posters, show times and nearest movie theaters. Additional details (cast, synopsis, etc.) of a movie is also available when users click a movie poster.

Browsing by theater provides uses a map of the closest theater. Choosing a particular movie house then lets you see what movies are being shown there.

This new movie feature is available only in the U.S., U.K, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Website for rejected apps? Check!

App StoreIt seems that there is no end to this controversy surrounding Apple and their shady method of approving and rejecting applications – unless they do of course, provide a clear system for their approval process.

A lot of developers aren’t happy with their way and are now going a step further in expressing this. Even Joe Hewitt, developer of the official Facebook app called it quits just this month. He told TechCrunch that his “decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple’s policies” because he is “philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process”.

Another evidence of the growing revolt against Apple is the launching of AppRejections http://apprejections.com. Created by iPhone developer Adam Martin, the site tracks all “unusual” and “unfair” rejections done by Cupertino-based company.

“Since Apple point-blank refuses to document the criteria, or even to discuss the matter on anything except a case-by-case basis,” Martin says, “I decided to collate all the known examples of rejected apps — and so this site was born.”

He also says that it was the rejection of the Google Voice application that spurred him to create the website.

eBay comes to BlackBerry

BlackBerry owners need not go to eBay’s website to find great deals now that an app for the famous auction Web site is available.

Co-developed by eBay and RIM, the app is available for U.S. and Canada auctioneers. It allows users to search, watch, bid and buy items in eBay and even allows payments via PayPal.

In addition to letting users search and purchase stuff, the app also provides real-time home screen notifications to users of their bidding status such as when they’ve won or lost a bid.

Lastly, the app allows users to schedule auction-related reminders and email notifications for auction end dates in the native BlackBerry calendar, making it easier for users to remember when to bid or sit-out on an auction. J

System requirements for the eBay app include activation with data plan, Internet service browsing capabilities, BlackBerry smartphone with at least 64-MB of built in memory (with at least 100KB available) and BlackBerry® Device Software v4.5 or higher.

The app is available at the BlackBerry App World and can be downloaded for free.

Black Friday deal: HP laptop for $197 on Best Buy

BestBuyCalling it the “first-ever, value priced HP laptop”, Best Buy is making the new HP laptop available this week as part of its Black Friday sale.

This aggressively priced HP G60-507DX laptop isn’t sacrificing its features for affordability though. It runs on an Intel Celeron 900 processor, has a 2GB RAM memory and has a 160GB hard drive.

Earlier this month, Best Buy also offered an affordable laptop, the $249.99 Acer laptop. According to a post in Best Buy’s website, they are on their way to offering the best savings this gift-giving season.

“From now through the end of December, Best Buy is marshaling a distinctive combination of dynamic assortment, exclusive offers and support services to benefit shoppers ready to give the gift of computing this holiday season – whether for loved ones or themselves,” the post read.

Kindle gets a battery boost, native PDF reader

KindleSince Barnes & Noble’s Nook are making huge waves in the market even before its release, Amazon’s Kindle has to keep up if they want to stay on top.

Announced today, Kindle now has an improved battery life when the wireless connection is turned on. Compared to its previous 4-hour battery life, the Kindle can now run up to seven days with the wireless activated. Battery life with the wireless connection turned off still remains, which is about two weeks.

“Battery power management for portable wireless devices is a complex technical area, and the battery life improvement announced today is the result of a six-month firmware improvement and testing program,” according to the press release.

In addition to the battery boost, Amazon has also added native PDF support to the Kindle. The company says users can now “read professional and personal documents in their original PDF format without conversion.” In order to read these PDF files, you can either email the files to your Kindle email address or transfer them via the USB connection. You can also easily convert your PDF files to the Kindle format by typing the word “Convert” in the subject of your email.

According to a press release, all new Kindles will be shipped with the battery boost and native PDF support. Users who already bought the Kindles before will be receiving the new enhancements via a firmware upgrade which will automatically be sent to them when the wireless connection is turned on.

New iMacs defective straight out of the box

Imagine being very excited on waiting for that new iMac to arrive, and the thrill opening that shiny new box – only to find out that the one have defective? Bummer right?

That’s what some are experiencing now according to several press. Apple’s new iMacs based on Intel’s Core i7 platform have been arriving with cracked LCD screens, and some even inoperable.

Tech blog Engadget was one of the many who bought a DOA one. The iMac they had failed to even boot at all. Speculations point to the new Intel chip as the cause of the booting problem.

If you search through Mac boards across the web, the cracked LCD screen seems to be common too. The crack was usually found on the lower left hand corner and maybe be associated with the packaging itself since the boxes came undamaged.

As of this writing, no official word yet from Apple. According to reports on Apple’s own support forums, the company is estimating a two-week wait for the defective iMacs to be replaced.

iPhoto ’09 gets update, fixes bugs

Today, Apple released an update to its digital photography software, iPhoto ’09.

The iPhoto 8.1.1. update fixes the 8.1 update’s problem regarding accuracy and face-recognition performance. The update also deals with previous problems on book order panel info displayed incorrectly and incorrect icon display for iPod touch.

Now, users will have no problems regarding faces matched incorrectly or slow performance.

The update is available via OS X’s Software Update, or it can be downloaded by visiting Apple’s support website.

The Cupertino-based company also gives some advice to uses who imported pictures using iPhoto 8.1:

Important: If you imported photos of people while using iPhoto 8.1, there’s an extra step you should take after installing the 8.1.1 update. Select all those photos, Control-click to open the contextual menu, and then choose Detect Missing Faces. This will redetect the faces in those photos and correct any face recognition issues introduced in iPhoto 8.1. You should not quit iPhoto during the Detect Missing Faces process.

Apple Final Cut server updated

AppleApple’s Final Cut server software released an update today, improving the overall stability of the software. The new version, Version 1.5.1 also addresses compatibility issues and some minor issues.

The new version fixed several things including the check-in and check-out process of Final Cut projects which is now faster, the status display in the Downloads and Uploads window (it is now set to “[None]” by default), and the aspect ratio on thumbnails for anamorphic clips.

Version 1.5.1 also improves the reliability of adding and removing archive devices where in previous problems include an issue with the Final Cut Server archiving to an unmounted archive device whereby a local folder was created for the archive.

For a more detailed list of the changes, users can refer to the Release Notes accessible from the application’s Help menu. Apple recommends the update for all users who have Final Cut Server 1.5.

Google says sorry for offensive First Lady image

The search giant is apologizing for the racially offensive image of the Michelle Obama. The image appears on the number one list when people are searching for pictures of the First Lady

“We apologize if you’ve had an upsetting experience using Google,” the company wrote.

The image, which is still viewable, now has a text ad above it saying “”Offensive Search Results” and “Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree.” Those who click on the image will be directed to a letter from Google explaining that some results may include disturbing content but they do not endorse the content of these sites.

The company also tackled the issue on a user support forum. The reason why the image appears on top of the search results for the First Lady is however, still not clear.

According to the Mountain View, California-based company, it relies on thousands of factors to rank a Web page’s importance in its search formulas. The company doesn’t eliminate search results based solely on user complaints. They do however, take down images in certain cases.

The White House is choosing to keep mum on the subject. 😉
