Hackers briefly block Twitter

Hackers were successful in briefly blocking the popular micro-blogging site Twitter early today.

Instead of being able to access the site, users were redirected to a Web site that according to a CNN report, had an image of a green flag and a message that said: “This site has been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army.”

There is no evidence however, that the attack on Twitter was indeed, linked to Iran.

Twitter posted a message late today on its blog stating that its DNS’ records “were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed.” It assured users that it will update and provide more details as soon as it had investigated the incident more fully.

Apple’s iPhone comes in second place

In a survey conducted by research firm comScore, Apple’s iPhone is now in second place when it comes to having the largest user base in the U.S. smartphone market.

Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry still takes the top spot while Windows Mobile-based models came in the third place.

According to Mark Donovan, a comScore senior analyst, Apple’s iPhone are being used by almost 9 million Americans as their primary phone. RIM’s Blackberry have almost 6 million greater user base with 15 million Americans saying RIM is their primary handset maker. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile are being used by an estimated 7.1 million people in the U.S.

“The surveys aren’t a measurement of sales velocity in the last quarter, but of the installed base using the phone as their primary,” said Donovan, acknowledging that the iPhone has been outselling Windows Mobile phones for some time.

“But there has been a large installed base of Windows Mobile phones out there, which accounts for its strength until recently.”

According to comScore’s result however, more and more people are leaning toward purchasing iPhones (20%) and Google Android-based phones (17% – 8% of that said they’re buying Verizon’s Droid) in the next 90 days.

“There’s some serious momentum behind Android,” Donovan said. “The iPhone and Android have set the bar at a new high for smartphones.”

An “Epic” complaint against Facebook

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has issues with Facebook’s changes to its user’s privacy options. And they filed a federal complaint to the Federal Trade Commission today to show just how serious they were.

“These changes violate user expectations, diminish user privacy, and contradict Facebook’s own representations,” EPIC’s complaint alleges.

The EPIC isn’t alone in their undertaking too. The Center for Digital Democracy, the Privacy Rights Clearing house and seven other advocacy organizations have also issues regarding the newly “public” treatment of user data like name, profile photos, gender and cities to search engines and third-party Facebook apps.

Facebook however, are quick to defend itself. According to the popular social networking site, they already spoke to the FTC and other regulators regarding the changes.

“We’ve had productive discussions with dozens of organizations around the world about the recent changes,” Facebook’s manager of public policy communications Andrew Noyes said in a prepared statement.

“We’re disappointed that EPIC has chosen to share their concerns with the FTC while refusing to talk to us about them.”

This isn’t the first time that Facebook’s privacy policies didn’t bode well with EPIC. In February of this year, the organization also prepared a federal complaint over certain changes to be implemented. The social networking site however, were quick to agree with EPIC and agreed to revert to its old terms of use.

Specs for Google’s Nexus One leaked

With the technology today, its hardly surprising that even the most confidential data can be leaked to the public.

Take this latest leaked info from Google’s Nexus One Android phone. Now, those who are craving for more info in this carrier-free Android phone can take their fill with the info on its specs.

According to the guys from These Are The Droids who analyzed the Android 2.1 ROM for the Nexus One, the new smartphone will have WiFi capability (of course), a noise-cancellation chipset, a proximity and ambient light sensor, a magnetic compass (cool), an accelerometer, a stereo FM speaker, OpenGL ES 2.0-capable graphics (that’s for you gamers out there), and references to an auto-focus camera with LED flash. There might also be a Snapdragon processor lurking inside.

The Snapdragon, for your info, is a super-powered processor that can clock in speeds up to 1GHz.

Pretty cool huh?

I for one can’t wait for this one to come out. 🙂

Want free Wi-Fi? Head over to McDonald’s

If you were feeling pretty resentful in giving over that $2.95 for two hours of Internet access when lunching at McDonald’s, this one’s for you.

According to an article published by the Wall Street Journal, the world’s biggest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants announced that they will be offering free Wi-Fi internet access starting January.

This move is made possible with a new deal AT&T, and will provide free Wi-Fi to 11,000 of the 13,000 McDonald’s in the U.S.

David Groom, chief information officer for McDonald’s USA, is pretty optimistic with the new free service.

“We’re excited about it,” Groom said to Dallas News. “One thing our customers have told us is: ‘We like your Wi-Fi, but would you make it free?’ This is one thing they’ve consistently asked for. It’s just another reason to come to McDonald’s.”

And yes, according to Groom, “free is free”. Meaning, you don’t need to purchase that delicious fries or that Big Mac to access their Wi-Fi. 🙂

YouTube releases top videos of 2009

Because the year is nearly coming to an end, its time to round up the best of 2009.

In this article, let’s take a look at what videos made it to YouTube’s most viewed list for this year released today.

Taking the top spot is Susan Boyle’s video of her first appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent” who garnered a total of more than 120 million views.

Coming in second is the real antics of the then 8-year-old-boy in “David After Dentist” with 37 million views.

The third place went to “JK Wedding Entrance Dance” who got 33 million views in 2009 with the whole wedding entourage dancing to the tune of Chris Brown’s Forever.

The fourth and fifth place went to the “New Moon Movie Trailer” (31 million views) and “Evian Roller Babies” (27 million views) respectively.

As for the music videos, here’s YouTube’s round up for this year’s most viewed:

Mobile Web is taking over the world, literally

For those who have been living under a rock in say, the last three years wouldn’t know this. But for us who’s trying to keep up will all the tech news happening every day, it’s very easy to see that indeed, mobile internet has come a veeeery long way.

And a study conducted by investment firm Morgan Stanley predicts that there will be more people using mobile devices to go online than desktop PCs in the next five years.

The 424-page study results, which the firm called “The Mobile Internet Report”, also points out that the growth of mobile internet is not only happening in developed countries – unlike prior tech trends. Howeever, US companies including Apple (iPhone), Google (Android) and Amazon (Kindle) are the forerunners of this phenomenon.

What caused mobile internet to be so popular?

The study points out to five key tech trends converging: 3G (soon 4G) broadband, online video, VOIP service like Skype and Vonage, the popularity of social networking, and “awesome mobile devices” that makes desktop/laptop-related tasks possible on the go.

So what’s in store for Apple and their popular products?

The firm predicts that Apple’s products accessories and services (iPhone, iPod touch, iTunes, etc.) will continue to be popular over the next two years. However, Apple must keep a lookout because after this period, Google Android, competition from emerging markets and limitations posed by wireless carriers may take a huge slice off of their market pie. 🙂

Google’s Android App market still fighting

AndroidIt may still take a while for them to catch up with Apple’s staggering 100,000+ applications available in the App Store, but the Android app market is growing and its growing fast.

According to AndroLib, a site that tracks the Android platform performance, Google’s app market has doubled in the last five months with applications now reaching 20,000+.

The news was announced today via Twitter: “Early Christmas present from Google: 20,000 apps in the Android market.”

It seems like Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, hit the nail when he said earlier this year that the Android’s growth will be explosive.

“Android adoption is about to explode,” he said. “You have all the necessary conditions.”

Based on AndroLib’s prediction, the number of iPhone apps will grow to an epic size of 300,000 in 2010, while Google’s Android Market is expected to grow to 50,000.

And hey, with the coming of the Nexus one, Google’s carrier-free Android smartphone, it might just be very possible. J

HP introduces three cloud software

As cloud computing provides immediate access to a broad range of applications, lesser capital expenditure, and other benefits, more and more companies are turning to this current trend.

Hewlett-Packard is no exception to that.

Today, HP introduced three new software that according to the company, help reduce operational costs and decrease risks. These software makes it possible for greater automations of services while enabling business to right-size their cloud environments to fit their budgets better.

The first software, HP’s Operations Orchestration enables automated provisioning to services to a business’ existing IT physical, virtual and cloud infrastructures. It also allows businesses who are in need of greater capacity to expand their internal environments to public clouds.

The second one, Cloud Assure, tackles budgeting. It enables businesses to ensure that they are getting the most of what they need while still staying within their set budgets.

The last one, the Communications as a Service (CAAS), enables telecommunications providers to offer great service to small and mid-size businesses through a utility model where customers pay only for what they use.

Facebook and Twitter: hand in hand

Friends who follow you on Twitter need not go to your Facebook site to see your status updates and other posts – that is when this project pushes through.

According to Malorie Lucich, a Facebook spokeswomen, Facebook has already began testing this week a new feature that will enable posts on the site to automatically be published in Twitter (just like what I’m doing in this site :)).

Rumors circuiting on the web say the new feature might be available to the general public anytime this week. Lucich however, won’t confirm these rumors.
