Google Starts Rolling Out Mobile-First Indexing

Melbourne, Australia - May 23, 2016: Close-up view of Google apps on an Android smartphone, including Chrome, Gmail, Maps.

Search giant Google has announced this week that it would be rolling out its “mobile-first” indexing of the web. Google’s decision came in after it tested and experimented the search indexing for a year and a half. The search giant, in 2016, has revealed its plan to impose changes on how search index works.

This further explains how the algorithm works on mobile while opening the web index of a website. The experiment, according to Google, attempts to understand how data is being structured and how snippets are shown from various sites to Google search results.

What is Google’s mobile-first indexing?

“To recap, our crawling, indexing, and ranking systems have typically used the desktop version of a page’s content, which may cause issues for mobile searchers when that version is vastly different from the mobile version,” Google said in its official blog.

Also, Google pointed out that using its mobile-first indexing, it would use “the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our – primarily mobile – users find what they’re looking for.”

“We continue to have one single index that we use for serving search results. We do not have a “mobile-first index” that’s separate from our main index. Historically, the desktop version was indexed, but increasingly, we will be using the mobile versions of content,” the search giant added.

As early as December 2017, the search giant had started to transition several websites to mobile-first indexing. Google, however, declined to point the properties that were move. Fast forward this year; Google said it would encourage webmasters to make mobile-friendly websites.

“We do evaluate all content in our index — whether it is desktop or mobile — to determine how mobile-friendly it is. Related, we recently announced that beginning in July 2018, content that is slow-loading might perform less well for both desktop and mobile searchers,” Google said.

What the leaked video shows?

For instance, the MIX 2S was shown in a classy white color variant, although it appeared blurry. With the leaked video, some users are now having difficulty in identifying the phone’s official image. It can be recalled that both Xiaomi’s brand ambassador and CEO has shared the official device images.

Not only that, Xiaomi has earlier revealed the specs of the company’s new smartphone. Hence, the leaked video did not really offer something new about the phone. Aside from this, mobile enthusiast claims that the video did not match with the expected 5.99-inch smartphone.

The phone at the leaked video also differs from the Xiaomi’s announcement about the phone’s supposed dual camera. It did not also have a notch as shown in the video. According to Xiaomi, the company’s new smartphone is expected to have an AI driving feature. This feature is possible using the phone’s camera software.

Apple’s latest iPad now supports the Apple Pencil

The star of Wednesday’s Apple event was of course the newly-launched iPad with Apple Pencil support.

Physically, there isn’t anything new to the company’s most popular tablet. It still has the same 9.7 inch screen, bezels, Touch ID sensor, button placement, and cameras. What’s new however, is it’s support for the Apple Pencil. And on the inside, the update to the latest A10 processor.

Now you don’t have to shell out big bucks for the Pro lineup to make use of Apple’s celebrated pencil. Starting at $299 for schools and $329 for the general public, it is literally the same price as the previous model. Although it isn’t the $259 budget iPad pricing that it was rumoured to be, it is still a good price base with its added Pencil support.

Do note that the Apple Pencil doesn’t ship with the iPad. You can opt to purchase the Pencil priced at $99 for consumers and $89 for schools.

If you think the price is too steep for the Pencil, fret not. Along with the new iPad reveal, Apple also announced that Logitech is creating its own stylus dubbed the Crayon. At $49, this is a cheaper alternative to the Pencil.

In the launch, the Cupertino-based company also introduced a slew of new apps that are targeted to the education sector. These new apps, along with a usable Pencil on the cheaper iPad are aimed to gain their footing back in schools.

Five years ago, iPads dominated the schools and accounted for half of all mobile devices shipped to US schools. However, Chromebooks now currently dominate the classrooms with 60% shipments in the US alone.

Sales for the iPad has been declining in the last three years, and Apple hopes that the new features they have introduced would bring back their glory days in campuses.

More ways to better use your iPhone and Mac together.

Apple has always designed their products to work seamlessly together. We all know about airdrop, iMessage and iCloud notes, and if you own the iPhone and the Mac, you know how this makes our productivity so much better.

Below are more ways to use Apple‘s products together.

Universal Clipboard

This feature basically allows you to copy an item (a text, image) from one device and paste it on your other device. For example, all you have to do is copy a text (like a URL or an email address) as you normally would and paste it to your notes on your phone.

Do take note that the copied data is only available for pasting for a short period of time so try to do it as soon as possible. You must also have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff turned on. Handoff is accessible in the System Preferences (on your Mac) and in Settings (on your iOS devices).

iMovie Projects

You can actually edit your videos on your phone and then continue doing that on your Mac without having to transfer over your files.

To do this, go to your iMovie and select any project you’ve created. Click the Share icon and select Airdrop. You will be asked to choose if you want to share the Video File or the iMovie Project. Choosing the video file will export the video while choosing the iMovie Project will of course let you transfer all files including the timeline.

Hand-Off Between Apps

The handoff is a very neat feature that came with the latest software.

This allows you to pick up where you left off on majority of the apps from Apple and some third-party apps like Chrome. When you’re using Chrome on your mac, and want to switch to your phone, just double tap your home button (or for iPhone X, tap and hold the bottom of the screen, move your finger up, and hold again) and you will see the handoff icon at the bottom.

If you’re on your phone and want to switch to your mac, just take a look at your dock and you will see an icon with a phone at the far left of your dock.

Again, for all of these to work, please make sure that you have Wifi, Bluetooth and Handoff enabled. You must also be signed-in to one iCloud account using the same Apple ID in all your devices.

I the first two years, up to 20,000 I-Pace vehicles will join the Alphabet Inc company’s driverless service. It will be launched later this year. This will give the public a chance to book rides I the driverless vehicles.

Waymo and jaguar

I-Pace will be the sixth vehicle to join the Waymo fleet. Among the group are the Chrysler Pacifica, a semi-truck, the cute little test car, and others.

Other Information

Jaguar and Land Rover already have their own self-driving technology which includes off-road capabilities. After a self-driving Uber test vehicle was involved in a fatal accident, companies and regulators are re-evaluating autonomous vehicles.

Waymo CEO John Krafcik said, “ at Waymo, we have a lot of confidence that our technology would be able to handle a situation like that”.

The company’s role in the world, according to Krafcik, is to build the world’s most experienced drivers. He also said that the company is confident with its technology. Waymo has over five million real world on the road tests and five billion miles.

The I-Pace SUV’s will operate alongside the Chrysler Pacifica. It offers a more luxurious mode of transportation, similar to UberX and UberLux taxis.

Robot Rules: Will They Dominate Over Humans In The Future?

0

Is Robot Domination Possible In The Future?

Is robot domination possible? The most obvious answer by most people will be a very big “NEVER!”. But is it really possible? Maybe and maybe not.

Invade And “Take Over”

In a way, I guess we can say that robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) will “take over” the world. Let us be realistic. With technology, a lot of things around us are related to robots and artificial intelligence. They control almost everything in any aspect of society.

Take our own homes, for example. The basic component of a community is the family. Our homes are full of modern technology. From our televisions, to washing machines and other appliances, to our gadgets and devices. Of late, even in thee commercial aspect, robots can be found. We now have the carpenter robot. And even a burger-flipping robot.

Technology is the product of human imagination, intelligence and drive to improve lives. Maybe the saying “nothing is impossible” is the driving force of these people.

Robot

Advantages Of Robotics

Just like everything else, robotics can also have advantages and disadvantages. Advantageous in a way that they can replace workers on very heavy work. And they can finish the work faster. There are also functions or tasks that humans may find hard to accomplish. In the medical field, for example. In some medical procedures, surgeons and other medical practitioners use robots and advance technology to help them complete the procedures. This can save millions of lives.

If we take it in a positive perspective, robots can be a great help to us humans. It only depends on how we use and control them.

Its Disadvantages

Of course if there are advantages, there are also disadvantages. For one, they are prone to malfunction. Since they are mechanical, malfunction is possible. Another disadvantage is that humans may develop laziness. There is a possibility that if there are robots around to help humans with their work, they may just rely on the robots. But still it depends on how we handle the situation.

The most obvious disadvantage is it is expensive. Ordinary people may not be able to afford it. So despite of their desire to have robots help them, its cost may be a hindrance for the fulfillment of their dreams.

In Conclusion

Robots are developed by humans. So it is up to us, humans if we let them control us or let these robots know who the boss is.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones From Marshall

Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones is the latest from Marshall. The company adds noise cancelling to its Bluetooth headphones with the Mid ANC.

The Marshall Mid ANC Headphones

Marshall is slowly building an entire line-up of headphones and consumer-focused speakers by licensing its brand to Zound Industries. The new headphones are the first from Marshall to offer active noise cancelling. It is a welcome update to the company’s line-up.

The Mid ANC is almost pretty much identical to the original Mid Bluetooth. That is, aside from the new switch on the right ear that allows for toggling active noise cancelling. The original Mid Bluetooth had two passive noise-reduction microphones. The Mid ANC however doubled it to four microphones. This allows active noise cancellation. Turn it on and almost all of the outside world will vanish. But its battery life will be affected. It will have 30 percent less battery life.

Noise-cancelling

Its Design

Basically, the design of Mid ANC is the same as the Mid Bluetooth. They have the same black leather vinyl finish, brass highlights and the same overall design. Marshall said it has tweaked a few colors here and there and claims to have improved the hinge to make it a little more comfortable. Sad to say though, that the Mid ANC still charge like the Mid Bluetooth, via Micro USB, not USB-C.

Feedbacks

According to those who have tried the Mid ANC, it does not have any significant difference if compared to the Mid Bluetooth. The original Mid headphones were already pretty good at blocking out noise passively. But the active noise cancellation dramatically improves the ability.
It is not like the total sonic isolation of expensive more expensive models from Bose or Sony could provide. The Mid ANC costs less.

The biggest problem with the Mid ANC on the other hand, was the fit. Wearing this on-ear headphones for a long period of time gives you the feeling that your ears are getting crushed. It may probably depend on its user. But hopefully, Marshall will develop the Mid ANC Bluetooth headphones and make it a state of the art device.

Instagram Is Changing Their Algorithm For The Better

Instagram is changing their algorithm to make things a little “more timely”.

We’ve been asking this for a long time – we want to see posts on our feed as they are posted. And Instagram finally listened, well sort-of.

In a statement, the image-sharing app announced that they are making changes to ensure that news posts are more likely to appear first on our feeds. In other words, Instagram’s algorithm will not meddle with our feeds as much as they used to.

The new algorithm is designed to give you more control over your feed.

The app is now currently testing a “New Posts” button. Rather that it happening automatically, this button lets you choose when you want your feed to be refreshed.

So basically you can scroll through Instagram as much as you like and you won’t be accidentally taken to the top of the page. Tap it and you’ll be taken to the top of the feed where new posts come in.

According to Instagram, this new feature will help your feed “feel more fresh” and you “won’t miss the moments you care about”.

The improvements are probably in response to the usual complaints on how sometimes you see posts over and over again. Or sometimes, it only shows posts by those people you usually interact it.

“We did this via a number of changes, including an adjustment so that very old content does not get bumped up higher in feed,” explained Gabe Madway, Instagram’s spokesperson.

Do take note that they are not returning to chronological posts.

“Instagram’s feed ranking is powered by machine learning, which is constantly adapting and improving based on new data,” Mr. Madway adds. “But this is a nice change that people should notice.”

Robot Which Flips Over Burgers Follows the Carpenter Robot

0

A Robot That Flips Burgers

The robot that flips burgers has begun work at a restaurant in Pasadena, Los Angeles. The robot is named Flippy. For the obvious reason that he “flips” burgers.

Flippy’s First Shift

Flippy started his first shift in Pasadena. This is the first of the dozens of locations for the system. This technology is said to replace human fast-food workers.

What is Flippy

Flippy is basically an arm with a spatula. Its primary function is to flip burger patties. According to sources, Flippy did its job well. But human workers can relax. Even a mechanical worker needs a time off.

Robot

Flippy was created by Miso Robotics. It made its debut at CaliBurger in Pasadena. According to Miso Robotics, Flippy did its job well. But he was overwhelmed by many. So its creator decided to let it take a few days break for some upgrades.

According to Miso, they need to perform test on the robot. This is to ensure that the location can fulfill a large number of orders.

Flippy’s Return To Work

Flippy will resume its burger duty next week. But his shift will only be for a limited time. That is 11 AM until 2 PM. This is just to cover the lunchtime shift.

More About Flippy

Flippy is more of an automation than a human replacement. It uses a machine vision to locate burgers on the grill and time how long they’ve been cooking. And flip them when needed.

Will It Replace Humans?

Flippy will not replace human workers totally. Flippy’s task is just to tend to the burger patties. Human workers will still have to put cheese, assemble orders and take customer’s orders.

Flippy is just basically a primary attraction just like those Chinese restaurants who use robot waiters.
Despite gimmicks, robots are finding their place to more occupations. CaliBurger is planning to use Flippy in 50 locations around the US. Miso Robotics is only one of a number of startups using the latest technology to automate the food industry.

Startup Momentum Machines has raised $18 million to take its burger robots into fast-food joints. Other companies are building machines that make pizzas and salads.
