Watch Netflix and YouTube On Your Nintendo Switch

Playing games might not be the only thing you’ll be doing in your Nintendo Switch soon.

This secret but not-so-secret news came as a surprise since there was no mention of it at the E3. But it seems like the Nintendo Switch may soon have support for Netflix and Youtube.

While the Switch comes with WiFi capabilities and a web browser, it doesn’t support streaming applications. Hulu is the only streamer available in the console and has been since last year. However, this is only available for users in the US and Japan.

But that might soon change. Spotted by Reddit user DevCakes, new Switch listings for Netflix, YouTube and Hulu, have appeared on Best Buy’s website. The information has since been removed but not before a screenshot was done.

Under the heading “Smart Enabled”, BestBuy promises access to “a world of instant entertainment” with Nintendo Switch.

“Just connect to the Internet and stream movies, listen to music, and access a wide variety of other content.”

Below the description were the three logos of Netflix, Hulu and Youtube as examples.

BestBuy has since responded to the leak saying that it was an error. Do you believe them?

Facebook Surprisingly Losing Steam Among Teens – Here’s Why

And just when you thought that it couldn’t be more popular (or controversial), Facebook according to the Pew Research (Internet and Technology) is losing its foothold in this demographic to Youtube, Snapchat, and Instagram. The teens are speaking out and expressing their ambivalence over social media. Some say it makes them feel connected, others say that the “closeness” is superficial and that it encourages isolation, while others fear bullying and the pressure to go with whatever is popular at the moment.

In a prior Pew Research study in 2015, 71% of teens (12-17 years old) were still on Facebook. Today, that has dropped significantly to  51%. But why are American kids abandoning the ship and migrating to Youtube (used by 85% of teens),  Instagram (72%), and Snapchat (69%). Coincidentally, these three more popular platforms are primarily “camera-based” platforms. Facebook is more popular among kids from lower income families: 70% came from those with incomes of $30,000 and lower. Those who patronized Facebook like the fact that it is easier to connect with friends and families from different age groups, find people with the same interests and ferret relevant news. But for those who don’t use Facebook or had reduced their exposure, some claimed that a lot of it had to do with parents “shutting down Facebook”. A disturbing finding is that over a quarter of users find bullying and spreading false rumors rampant on Facebook. One fifth complained that it actually destroyed relationships because of decreased interaction and led to some sort of digital”addiction”.

When asked which social media platform they used the most, only 10% chose Facebook while 35% chose Snapchat followed closely followed by 32% who preferred Youtube. Girls were more loyal to Snapchat while boys gravitated to Youtube more. The slide is so serious that E-Marketer predicts that ” Facebook would lose a further 2.1 million American users under the age of 25 this year”. With 95% of U.S. teens owning smartphones currently, that’s a huge number that can be lost through the cracks – advertising wise since 45% claim to be on the Internet constantly. The Pew Research also revealed 83% of girls play video games while 97% play video games; another reason why the quality and safety of games should be monitored.

“When the 17-year-old turned 13, getting a Facebook account was a rite of passage. Not long after she got the account she realised she didn’t have much use for it.” – Paul Verna (E-marketer analyst)

Personally, although ensuring privacy is now a battle cry at Facebook, the fact that they are playing “matchmaker’ soon is in some weird way, anti-teen and possibly could open a whole new can of worms. Perhaps if Facebook kept it more simple and not push its dendrites into all directions like battling Google on the “apps for business” end, Youtube for video and for pairings then it could focus on what had made it extremely popular in the first place. Some habits die hard and the older demographics are apparently still happy with the appeal of Facebook; but the downside is that tweens may skip Facebook together and flock to Snapchat and Instagram making the user population an aging one.

It May Soon Be Possible To Watch YouTube Videos in Incognito Mode

YouTube spotted testing an Incognito mode on Android that doesn’t save your viewing history.

Users will soon be able to watch all that crazy, bizarre and weird stuff on YouTube in secret thanks to the app’s Incognito Mode.

The YouTube Android app has been spotted to have the Incognito mode for some of its users. This is the latest addition to the list of services online offering a dedicated mode for no-history browsing. This includes browsers and digital keyboards like Gboard, and Swiftkey.

Of course, if you aren’t signed in to you account in YouTube, there aren’t any history being recorded. But a lot of us have channels that we have subscribed to and being signed in helps to see them faster. Being in Incognito Mode allows you to still be signed in but with the benefit of incognito browsing.

Android Police first reported the testing on the YouTube app for Android devices. The new change appears to be rolling out for select users through a server-side update. This means there are no actions necessary for users to have this update.

Once you click on your avatar from the top-right corner of the YouTube app, a dedicated Turn on Incognito option can now be seen. This replaces the Sign out option which is now accessible through the Switch account option.

Currently, YouTube’s mobile apps already let users pause their viewing and search history by finding those toggles in the settings menu. This new mode is a quicker way to do just that. However, being incognito mode doesn’t make a user totally invisible. Activities will still be logged at the employer, institution, or the Internet service provider (ISP) end.

No word yet as to when this update will be available to all users, including the YouTube app for iOS. We’ll be keeping a lookout!

YouTube Take a Break Feature Rolls Out For iOS and Android

The latest update for the YouTube app lets users set reminders to take a break from using the app.

YouTube is pushing for a balanced technology life with its latest app update. Users can now set a reminder for themselves to take a break from a YouTube video binge session. This is part of Android’s Digital Wellness project announced at Google I/0.

Is this feature necessary? Unfortunately, it is to some users. Is it sad that it actually has come to a point where we need notifications of this kind? Again, unfortunately, yes. The ease of access to the internet sites such as YouTube can sometimes cause people to spend hours watching videos, including me.

The YouTube Take a Break feature allows users to schedule custom breaks for them to step away from their online binge. It is accessible on the mobile app Setting screen and can be se to appear every 15, 30, 60, 90, or 180 minutes.

Once an option is selected, YouTube will pause the videos at those intervals. A user can choose to dismiss the notification to continue watching or close the app. By default, this setting is switched off.

Ready to use it? Here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to turn it on:

  1. Go to the user profile icon at the top right corner of your app
  2. Click Settings and choose Remind Me To Take a Break
  3. A drop-down menu will appear with the time intervals available for you to choose from

Biggest Video Vanished After YouTube Hacking

Vevo’s YouTube Account Hack Causes Biggest Video To Disappear

Vevo’s YouTube account appears to have fallen victim to hackers. Because of this, a number of high-profile videos have been defaced including its biggest or most-watched video.

Video Disappearance

The most-viewed video of all time, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”, briefly disappeared from YouTube after being defaced by hackers. The video’s image was altered and replaced with masked gang holding guns. The description was changed by hackers calling themselves Prosox and Kuroi’sh.

Other Videos Which Were Defaced

A lot of other popular videos have been defaced. Among them are songs by Chris Brown, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Drake, Taylor Swift, Shakira, and DJ Snake. Some of those videos are available, with defaced title and thumbnail images. The affected videos have been downloaded to the artist’s Vevo Youtube accounts. But it is not clear if these individual accounts were also infiltrated by hackers, or if there was a wider exploit on Vevo accounts. They used a video “script” to alter the video titles, claims one of the hackers.

Google’s Comment

When asked about this predicament, Google referred reporters to Vevo. “Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalogue were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained”, says a Vevo spokesperson. “We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalogue to be restored to full working order. We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach”.

What Is Vevo

Vevo is a joint venture between three of the music industry’s biggest record labels. These are Sony, Universal, and Warner with music videos of its artists syndicated on YouTube.

Despite the security breach, Vevo is assuring the public that they are doing all they can to trace the source of the problem and solve it.

YouTube said that it had worked with Vevo to secure the affected accounts after “seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels.

A Twitter account claiming to belong to Prosox said that it was just for fun and that he loves YouTube so we should not judge him. Well, he should be taught a lesson. Because what he calls “fun” caused dilemma and a lot of trouble to most people. Specially those who were directly affected by it.

YouTube Kids is Releasing a Non-Algorithmic Version Of Its App

YouTube Kids is planning to release a non-algorithmic version of the app. All videos will be curated by YouTube team members instead.

YouTube’s kid-centered app, YouTube Kids, was in hot-water last month after it suggested unsuitable content to children. Meant to filter out adult content for kids, the app failed when it actually suggested conspiracy videos. These included videos of prominent conspiracy theorist David Icke, videos claiming the world is flat and moon landing hoaxes.

When contacted, YouTube explained to Business Insider that that “no system is perfect and sometimes we miss the mark.” The company added that it will continue “to work to improve the YouTube Kids app experience.”

Following this, YouTube is reportedly planning to release a new version of the YouTube Kids app that has an option to show non-algorithmically suggested videos. Only videos from channels chosen by YouTube curators will be displayed instead.

This option will be available for parents to select alongside the algorithmic version. With this, parents can let their kids browse without being worried about any unsuitable content appearing.

The app is reportedly going to available in the coming weeks. When contacted, YouTube didn’t deny the plans to BuzzFeed News. They did however say that they “don’t comment on rumour or speculation.”

YouTube TV Signs Deal with NBA Following Similar Deal with MLB

YouTube TV announces their partnership with NBA and becomes the first-ever presenting sponsor of the 2018 NBA Finals.

After dominating the online video streaming world for years, YouTube wants to do the same with sports TV streaming services through YouTube TV.

This week, the Google-acquired website announced that they have just signed a multi-year partnership with NBA to help promote their new streaming TV service. The deal makes them the first-ever presenting sponsor of the 2018 NBA Finals.

You’ll be sure to see them more as the game will be referred to as “The Finals presented by YouTube TV”. They will get on-air callouts and will be all-over NBA’s social media and digital assets. The YouTube TV logo will of course, be featured on the court and in the arena.

The deal also makes YouTube TV the presenting sponsor of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Finals. The NBA’s minor league and the NBA G League are also covered.

The online-streaming giant has definitely been busy as of late. Because this is the not the only deal they have struck in the sports industry just this year.

YouTube has forged a similar deal with the Major League Baseball and announced the addition of the MLB Network on their streaming services earlier this month. With this deal in place, they will again serve as the “presenting” sponsor of the World Series for two more years.

They will also debut a season-long sponsorship called “First Pitch”. This will feature YouTube TV branding during the first pitch of the games on both MLB Network and Their social media channels will also be dominated by the YouTube TV brand.

But they have not stopped with just basketball and baseball. YouTube TV has also recently partnered with the Los Angeles Football Club and Seattle Sounders FC.

Banned By YouTube, Gun Enthusiasts Move to YouPorn

(Credit: Recoil Magazine)

The gun control debate finally enters the digital realm.

As they say, if you can’t beat them, find another way! Yea, not really but that’s what these gun enthusiasts did.

Youtube quietly introduced tighter rules on videos involving weapons and a lot of people are not happy about it. This ban will reportedly start next month. However, at least two channels that produced videos on the topic have already been suspended.

In a statement, a YouTube spokesperson said:

“We routinely make updates and adjustments to our enforcement guidelines across all of our policies.”

“While we’ve long prohibited the sale of firearms, we recently notified creators of updates we will be making around content promoting the sale or manufacture of firearms and their accessories.”

The decision from the popular video site comes days before Saturday’s March For Our Lives. The survivors of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida organised this rally.

InRange TV, a YouTube channel devoted to firearms, decided to migrate their videos to a well-known pornography website because of this move by YouTube.

“YouTube’s newly released released vague and one-sided firearms policy makes it abundantly clear that YouTube cannot be counted upon to be a safe harbor for a wide variety of views and subject matter,” they wrote on their Facebook page.

“PornHub has a history of being a proactive voice in the online community, as well as operating a resilient and robust video streaming platform,” they add.

This is not the first time that YouTube made a move towards restricting the promotion of firearms on their website. Last year, they banned videos that taught users how to make guns fire more quicker. This decision came after the Las Vegas mass shooting in October.
