Are ebooks the trend of the future?

According to a report published by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), publishers now earn more on ebooks than hardcover books.

The report said that the sales revenue (net) from ebooks is more than the  sales of hardcover books during the first half of the year. This is the first time that digital copies of titles sold more than printed ones. Data was compiled from a number of publishers but didn’t include children’s books.

Adult ebooks that were sold earned $282.3 million during the first quarter. It is a 28.4% increase from the same time a year ago. Young and children’s ebooks sales increased by 233%, earning $64.3 million during the same period. Adult hardcover books on the other hand, grew a modest 2.7%, earing $229.6 million dollar during the first quarter.

Books on paperback continue to rise, raking in $299.8 million during the first quarter of the year. Though figures suggest that’s in a decline.

Audiobooks grew in a better rate, gaining 32.7% to $25 million dollars during the first half.

These changes in the buying style of consumers are highly attributed to the influx of digital devices, such as ebook readers, tablets and smartphones.

Amazon pulls out 5,000 titles from Kindle store

Amazon is pulling out at least 5,000 titles of the shelves after they failed to reach an agreement with Independent publish Group (IPG) over terms of a new contract. The latter is the second largest independent book distributor in the US and has been in the business for 41
Chicago Tribune reported that Amazon began pulling out IPG titles last Monday when discussions between the two companies seemed to break down. The e-books are the only once years.

 

affected as print editions are still available in Amazon.

In a published email, IPG president Mark Suchomel blamed Amazon for the outcome of the talks. He accused the latter of placing pressure on publishers and distributors in the hope of getting a better deal.

Amazon has not commented on the issue as of the moment.

Barnes & Noble to release new Nook eBook reader in spring

The New York Times published an article last Sunday regarding Barnes & Nobles taking on Amazon. It stated that they are “putting the final touches on their (Barnes & Noble’s) fifth e-reading device, a product that executives aid would be released sometime this spring”.

Unfortunately, the popular newspaper wasn’t able to get any comment from a representative from the company.

This could possibly be a new tablet. It can also be an affordable e-ink e-reader that can retail to about $50. Or it could even be an e-reader that has a Qualcomm power-efficient Mirasol color display that is now being used by e-readers in Korea and China.

Can this new e-reader be a part of the Nook’s launch outside US? Barnes & Noble is rumored to making this gamble and the Times article said that it is “expected to be a Waterstones bookstores in Britain.” Though they haven’t revealed any date as of yet but at least there is some glimmer of hope that its release could have this new feature.

It’s good to note that Barnes & Noble will continue to redesign their stores. This according to CEO William Lynch. They will investing in smaller stores and eliminate DVD and music sections while not completely removing them from their line-up as they will only move it to other stores.

Kindle Fire features, still no match for iPad

The new bargain priced Kindle Fire has received good reveiws lately and it seems that it has ignited public interest on the tablet arena. Unfortuantely, with the gazillion updates Amazon and other tablet manufacturers have done to their devices, it’s a pity that it’s hard to read books on.

The Kindle Fire is suppsed-to-become 2012‘s most affordable tablet. Its $200 price tag is cheap and a better choice compared to other terrible Android brands that seem to sprout out from China.

Apple’s iPad has a legit rival in Samsung’s Galaxy Tab series. Much like their bigger brothers, the tablet arena also seems to have two dominant brands in the market in 2012.

But the Kindle Fire is no iPad. That is one fact that is clear. It feels like a brick. Just like a Soviet version of Apple’s innovation. Some even argue that you should not call it a tablet.

But there are also things that this little gizmo can brag about. One, it has tons of video, music and Amazon lets you keep formats that isn’t restricted to the Kindle alone. It’s like a big iPod that gives you the ability to surf the web and check emails.

 Unfortunately, it isn’t good for reading ebooks.

Amazon: Kindle sales hits millionth mark

Amazon announced last Thursday that Kindle devices were flying of the shelves for the past few weeks. They are estimating a million Kindle devices sold per week for the past three weeks. The sales are for their latest Kindle fire, Kindle touch and the Kindle.

Their latest gadget, the Kindle Fire, is their version of the tablet that runs on Android. The said device was recently released and it has features that can hook into Kindle’s digital music, movies, TV shows and Kindle ebooks

Comparing the Kindle Fire to Apple’s iPad 2 is a no brainer. But it has been a big hit for Amazon and is currently ranked behind the iPad in the tablet market.

Though Amazon didn’t breakdown the sales of each of their products, they did say that their Kindle Fire remains to be their best selling device. It is the most gifted and most wished for gadget in the Amazon site since its release.

The demand for the Fire has been surging week after week and the company announced that sales for the Fire has already reached the million mark.

Samsung brings their eReader total to four

It seems like Samsung is indeed really serious in joining the eReader market.

Because aside from the eReaders they’ve unveiled on the press conference at the CES, they have two more eReaders on display on their booth.

In addition to the E6 (6-inch) and E101 (10-inch), Samsung apparently also have a 5-inch model and 6-inch model with a QWERTY keypad.

Similar to the E6 and E101, the two newly-unveiled models also have touchscreens and users can write directly on the screens using a stylus with a built-in electromagnet resonance (EMR).

The two is set to be released on March or April, months ahead of the E6 ($399) and the E101 ($699) which are both set to be launched on July. Pricing for the two new eReaders however aren’t available yet.

Kindle: Most gifted item in Amazon

Before, a lot of people thought ebooks will never really be a hit and ebook readers aren’t a necessity. All of that changed with the introduction of Amazon’s Kindle.

For the first time ever, Amazon shoppers on Christmas day bought more books for their Kindles then they did the traditional paperbacks and hard-bounds.

Usually, on Christmas day, people are out there opening their received presents, not buying stuff. This time however, people who received the Kindle – and that’s a lot – immediately went to Amazon’s online store to purchase at least one ebook to try out their new gadget.

And just to show how much the Kindle has become a main-stream product, Amazon says the ebook reader is the “the most gifted item in Amazon’s history”.

Hmmn, I wonder how did its main competition – Barnes & Noble’s Nook – do during the holidays?

Free Wi-Fi on Barnes & Noble stores

You can now buy and download eBooks right in the stores of Barnes & Noble thanks to the launching of free Wi-Fi in their bookstores yesterday.

Of course, the free wireless hotspots will be provided through AT&T, the same company that has provided Barnes & Noble paid Wi-Fi network since 2005. And if you’re wondering how many stores B&N has, that’ll be 777 stores in 50 states.

The free Wi-Fi service from the store is to boost its eBook business to further counter their main rival, Amazon, which jumpstarted the eBook market with their very own eBook reader, the Kindle.

And for you guys who still hasn’t heard the news, Barnes & Noble will soon have their exclusive eBook reader from Plastic Logic and will be released to the public by 2010.
