Sprint is in the boat to launch HTC Touch Pro2

0

Ever since pictures of the successor of the Touch Pro with the Sprint logo appeared in the Web in the late spring, rumors that the carrier will have the HTC Touch Pro2 have circulated widely.

Now, a new leakage further adds weight to the rumor. A document, supposedly from the carrier, has gotten out. This document states that along with other several models, the Touch Pro2 will debut next month, specifically, on September 3.

Sprint has reportedly added support for their high-speed EV-DO Rev. A network on the device.

If this really is confirmed, Sprint will not be the first U.S. carrier to offer HTC’s latest model. Shortly after the phone maker revealed the Touch Pro2 a few months ago, T-Mobile has committed to offer it in their line-up.

Other carriers such as AT&T and Verizon are also working on adding the smartphone on their own respective line-ups.

No syndicating employees for Google and Apple

0

Well, that was when Google CEO Eric Schmidt was still a member of Apple’s board.

The two giant companies are said to have a kind of unspoken truce on the subject of poaching each other employees before.

According to TechCrunch, unnamed sources that there’s no formal, written agreement that exists and individual employees of either company are allowed to apply at the other. However, the two companies said that they would not “actively pursue” and poach the employees of each other’s workers.

We are left to wonder now that Schmidt is no longer at Apple’s board. Would they still keep their hands off each other’s top talented engineers and other creative workers?

If they did, it wouldn’t be the first time though that the companies are involved, albeit in separate cases.. In 2005, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against Google after the latter hired Kai Fu Lee from Microsoft. Last year, IBM sued Mark Papermaster for violating the terms of noncompete agreement to stop him for joining Apple. The two companies eventually settled and Papermaster started working with Apple six months later.

URL shortener Tr.im’s life permanently cut

0

When Twittering gained fame in the Web, URL shorteners found a hot new business too. With just a 140-character limit, users who want to post lengthy addresses need the help of these shorteners.

But what happens when the no. 1 microbloggling service chooses just one? What happens to others?

Apparently, they close down. Or at least that’s what happened to Tr.im on Sunday after parent company Nambu Networks failed to find a buyer for the service. Tr.im offers “ quick, easy, full-featured URL shortening with integrated posting to social networks”.

In blog post from Nambu Networks, the company expressed their regret over the discontinued service of Tr.im but made no secret about their feelings towards their rival Bit.ly or to the social media site, which the latter uses as its default URL shortener.

“Twitter has all but sapped us of any last energy to double-down and develop tr.im further. What is the point? With bit.ly the Twitter default, and with us having no inside connection to Twitter, tr.im will lose over the the long-run no matter how good it may or may not be at this moment, or in the future,” the post read.

Tweets with Tri.im URLs will be affected though. In an announcement posted on their site, Tr.im has assured previous users of their service that “all tr.im links will continue to redirect, and will do so until at least December 31, 2009.”

Google Voice still up to battle

0

Apple may have famously rejected their Google Voice service, but the Web giant isn’t ready to give up the fight just yet.

The app, which allows users to manage all calls from a single number, was supposedly blocked because AT&T felt threatened on their profits on calling plans. The wireless company, however, flatly denies any involvement.

According to the New York Times article, an iPhone Web app for the Google Voice is now being developed. This Web app contains all the functionality that the iPhone app has with the difference being that this will be accessed in the mobile Safari browser. It will still behave like an iPhone app though, even allowing users to install an icon on their home screen.

So the next question could be: Will Apple still reject the Web app?

Hmmmn, that won’t probably be the best idea considering the talk it generated when they first rejected Google’s app which turned the people, not to mention the FCC’s attention, to the vagueness and inconsistency of their approval standards.

Apple did allow Google to have a Latitude Web app after it was rejected from their App store, so chances are, this is a battle Google will win – or at least draw – with Apple.

iTunes with Facebook, Twitter and Blu-Ray?

0

Here’s some juicy bits of rumor that got out this weekend: a slew of interesting features on a new iTunes.

The web is abuzz with talk of an upcoming iTunes 9 which comes packed with some highly-requested features which includes a Blu-Ray disk support, an integration with Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm, and a new way to organize iPhone apps.

The source of the rumor is an article from Boy Genius Report where it says a “pretty reliable” source gave them a tip.

This Blu-Ray support will be very likely to happen as a report from AppleInsider vaguely suggested that a whole new generation of Macs will soon arrive and it will surely fulfill those wish-lists Mac users have long been craving for, among which is the Blu-Ray feature.

And uhm, adding a new way to categorize iPhone apps is another possible feature that will surely be received with open arms. And I’m pretty sure it’ll be the arms of those iPhone and iPod Touch users who are tired of the awful unintelligent confusing system of managing the apps in iTunes. J

Lastly, the rumor of an integration of the social media sites Facebook and Twitter and possibly the music listing site, Last.fm. Although this gossip is still vague according to BGR’s source, it’ll probably be an interesting development for Apple’s music software, not to mention adding convenience to members of the site.

And while these features are all rumors with no official word from Apple, we probably don’t have to wait that long since the annual iPod Launch is just a month away and most likely updates for these stuff will be released. Stay tuned! 😉

Dress up your new Google Chrome

0

Yep, if you’re the type who’d want to personalize stuff, you’ll love what Google did to the latest version of their browser.

The Google Chrome Beta browser has been released and is now available for download. This version comes with several new features and UI improvements, one of which is being able to customize its look.

The support for themes allows users to change the appearance of the browser through 29 different downloadable themes which you can find here. Now, users can change the look of the browser’s tabs, title bar, URL bar, bookmarks bar and the window frames.

Another noticeable change and improvement in this beta version is the new drag-and-drop feature of the thumbnails, allowing users to rearrange them according to their preferences. The thumbnails can also be “pinned” so that they will stay in place even if the site is not often visited.

There’s a change in the Omni box too. For those who are not familiar with the term, that’s Google’s search bar and address bar combined. When you type words there, small icons now appear to its right that indicate the type of the individual autocompletion results.

Another improvement on the Chrome is its JavaScript performance. Google built its own JavaScript virtual machine called V8 which according to them, is 30 percent faster than the latest official Chrome.

HTML5 features are now integrated in the browser too. Web worker threads and rending the <video> element is now supported, which makes video tagging possible.

Whew! Looks like the guys from Google have been working pretty hard in the past months. Well, we can expect more from these guys as they are still fighting their way up the browser ladder which is still dominated by Firefox.

The Google Chrome beta is available for download in Google’s Web site.

“The Sims” creator wants more than just a video game

0

And no, I don’t mean that as a gift or something.

Will Wright, creator extraordinaire of The Sims and Spore doesn’t want to stop on creating video games alone.

Since he sees himself not just as a “game maker” but an “entertainment designer”, he is now working on creating worlds that can cross every spectrum of media.

His new projects, something he is keeping a secret for the time being, apparently will enter (and conquer?) the world of mobile devices, internet and even traditional Hollywood outlets such TV and film.

Write wants people to be engaged not just in entertainment, but also “have them creating huge amounts of content for other people to experience”. This he discovered possible by watching gamers make over 100 million user-generated aliens, space ships and games through the use of editing tools provided with Spore.

“The question is how can you transfer that to other fields besides games,” he said.

Well, I’m pretty sure this’ll be a big hit if his new projects would be as awesome as his previous masterpieces.

Just to give an idea how successful they are, The Sims 3 has sold over 817,000 copies since June and that’s just in the U.S. alone. Spore also did pretty well, having sold over 1.7 million copies in the U.S. since last year.

So what’s Wright’s driving force for creating these games?

“People can learn lessons about the past, present and future in an entertaining way.”

In trouble? Text 911

0

If you’re in Iowa, that is.

Since almost everybody now owns a cellphone that is SMS-capable, it not that surprising that 911 emergencies can now be sent through text messages.

Last Wednesday, an emergency call center in the basement of the county jail located in Waterloo, Iowa, became the first in the country to accept text messages sent to “911”.

It might not be too long of a wait till others follow suit. Black Hawk County police chief Tomas Jennings said this service can be very convenient to many, especially to deaf and hard-of-hearing residents.

“I think there’s a need to get out front and get this technology available,” he said.

This service however, is still far from being perfect.

As of the present, only those that are within Black Hawk County and subscribers of i wireless – a local carrier affiliated with T-Mobile USA – are able to make use of the service. Intrado, the company who upgraded the call center, says that they are currently working with other carriers to make 911 texting available too.

Oh well, it’s a start right?

It seems that there’s no stopping in Microsoft’s plan in putting up their own chain of retail stores.

It was in February this year that the software giant first confirmed that the will be opening stores this fall. David Porter was hired as corporate vice president of Retail Stores.

Microsoft has already seemed to have finalized its logo for its upcoming retail stores and on July 28, has filed for it in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As of today though, the status of the filing is still “Newly filed application, not yet assigned to an examining attorney.”

The logo, which is planned to be placed in all Microsoft goodies and services, will appear in “retail store services and online retail services featuring computers, computer hardware, software, computer games, computer peripherals, portable music players and accessories, personal digital assistants, cell phones and accessories, video game consoles and accessories, webcams, books, clothing, back packs, messenger bags, computer bags and novelty items.”

Microsoft describes the logo in the filing as follows:

The mark consists of four squares arranged in a rectangular grid. Each square is colored to form three square-shaped regions within the square, with the color of each region gradating from dark to light toward the center of the design. The upper left square design is red, the lower left square is blue, the upper right square is green and the lower right square is yellow. The squares are separated by blank space.

Locations for the Microsoft store will include Scottsdale, Arizona and Mission Viejo, California. The company also plans to open stores outside the U.S. in the future.

What do you think? Will Microsoft succeed in this venture?
