iPhone-to-iPhone Augmented Reality May Soon Be Possible

Apple may soon debut an iPhone-to-iPhone augmented reality feature.

Augmented reality iPhone X

If you think the race for the best (and most) augmented reality (AR) products is gonna slow down, you’re wrong. Huge companies like Google, Amazon and Apple are scrambling to spit out as many AR products as they can develop them.

Both Google and Apple are reportedly trying to develop an AR technology that will allow two people to see the same virtual object in the same space. This bit of technology however is quite controversial and has brought out privacy concerns.

But Apple seems to have gone ahead and is ready to announce its iPhone-to-iPhone AR technology.

Sources claim that the Cupertino-based company has found a workaround to the privacy concern. The scanned data is reportedly going to be sent directly between the phones. This means Apple will not have any chance to see or record any data transmitted between two phones.

This is different from Google’s process which includes users having to scan their surroundings and store that data in the cloud.

The company has declined to comment on any of this rumours. But it has been widely speculated that there won’t be any hardware reveals this year at the WWDC. Instead, Apple will focus on software updates and and bug fixes.

If that is the case, debuting this AR feature would definitely be oen the highlights of the event. We’ve already heard about iPhones possibly being able to open doors. Adding the iPhone-to-iPhone AR would be the icing on the cake. Don’t you think so?

A huge backlash ensued when news broke out that Google has partnered with the US Military to provide AI expertise. Now, according to reports, the tech giant is not renewing its contract with the Pentagon for next year.

Gizmodo’s sources say that Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene announced the decision not to renew the contract at a meeting with employees Friday morning. Green also explained that the the backlash against the firm’s involvement in the project had been terrible for the company. The decision also comes before Google unveils its planned new ethical principles about its use of AI next week.

Project Maven

The project was initially dubbed Project Maven. It grew out of the Pentagon’s “Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team”. It’s focus was on working together with the US military to improve image analysis of sensitive footage.

However, employees of the company called them out for being a part of warfare. They claim that Google is not standing by its motto of “Don’t do evil”. Thousands of employees started a protest and some even handed out their resignations.

Google tried to get out of the hot water by stating that it was only a “minor project”. However, it was later revealed that it was in fact the opposite. It was Google’s “golden opportunity” and stepping stone to more lucrative military contracts. This includes being awarded a $10 billion cloud computing contract that Google is reportedly competing for.

Reports also claim that the project would have helped the company fast-track its security clearance.

Gizmodo’s sources say that Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene announced the decision not to renew the contract at a meeting with employees Friday morning. Green also explained that the the backlash against the firm’s involvement in the project had been terrible for the company.

Green said that Google is the forefront of the conversation about the ethical use of artificial intelligence. “It is incumbent on us to show leadership,” Greene said, according to a source.

Samsung To Unveil Note 9 with Updated Camera on August 9

Galaxy Note 9

South Korean giant Samsung is reportedly ready to announce the Galaxy Note 9 in an New York Event in August.

Galaxy Note 9

Ahhh the internet. Full of wonderful information and a treasure trove of rumours. And with the Note 9 being one of the most anticipated phones this year, there are plenty of rumours to go around.

Recent reports point to the unveiling of the latest Note flagship earlier than anticipated. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is set to be unveiled on August 9 in the Unpacked event. It will be held in New York, about two weeks earlier compared to last year.

So what can we expect from the Note’s latest iteration?

Screen protectors leaked online show that the Note 9 will have a bigger screen. The Note 8 has a 6.32 inch screen, its predecessor is likely to have an even bigger one at 6.38 inch. This will be largely due to reduced bezels at the top and the bottom of the phone.

People familiar of the matter also claim that the phone’s appearance is going to be similar to the Note 8. However, it will come with a better processor, we are guessing the Snapdragon 845.

What people are more excited about is the upgraded camera. Multiple reports claim that the Note 9 will of course be sporting a better camera. This year’s S9 came with new features such as adjustable aperture, a super slo-mo video feature and multi-frame noise reduction.

It is very likely that the Galaxy Note 9 will also come with these, plus more. Are you excited?

The tech giant has already reportedly acquired GitHub for a whooping $7.5 Billion in an all stock deal.Microsoft and GitHub

The rumours about Microsoft acquiring GitHub has been on and off for the last two years. However, if recent reports are to be believed, it seems that the two companies have finally reached an agreement.

Bloomberg is citing “people familiar with the matter” who claim that the software giant may announce the acquisition as early as today.

The company is currently valued at $2 billion after it received $250 million in funding back in 2015.If indeed that deal with Microsoft has been finalized, the latter would be paying at least $5 billion. This is a big step-up from the rumoured planned joint marketing partnership between the two worth $35 million.

For those who are not familiar, GitHub is a web-based hosting service for version control using Git and is mostly used for computer code. It allows developers to use GitHub’s tools to store, change or adopt codes for free. The company has more than 23 million users and boasts client organisations such as Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

Since Satya Nadella took over the CEO role, Microsoft has really been pushing for open source technology. It has made several of its products open sourced including PowerShell, Visual Studio Code, and the Microsoft Edge JavaScript engine.

With the acquisition in place, the company would have access to about 27 million software developers. It would also likely result to an even closer integration between Microsoft’s developer tools and the service.

Both companies have yet to comment on the acquisition rumours but I guess we won’t have to wait long to find out?

Update: Microsoft has already confirmed the acquisition of GitHub for $7.5 billion. This is the company’s second biggest acquisition next to the LinkedIn buyout at $26.2 billion.

iOS 12 Leak: Apple’s Digital Health Will Tell You If You Use Your Phone A Lot

iOS 12

Apple’s latest software update will tell you how much time you spend on your phone.

iOS 12

It seems that Google is not the only one who wants you to have a more balanced digital life. A leak on the iOS 12 software shows the addition of a Digital Health feature.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple’s latest iOS will be focusing on digital wellbeing and balancing tech usage with personal life.

The initiative dubbed Digital Health will allow users to monitor how much time they spend on their devices. It will also identify which applications users spend the time most. People familiar with the plans also claim that all these will be incorporated in a menu inside the Settings app.

Google announced a similar feature earlier this year. The Dashboard also monitors user smartphone habits and reminds them to take a break.

Apple will be holding its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose on Monday. It is rumoured that Digital Health, along with the iOS 12 will be debuted there.

Smartphone addiction is really a growing concern in our time. A recent study by Stringberry showed that our thumbs scroll the height of the Burj Kahlifa every month on our phones. That’s 828 meters! And even crazier? We scroll the height of Mount Everest every year with our thumbs. That’s 8,848 meters!

HP Jet Fusion 3D Printer: Beautifully Useful Disruptive Technology

Play

Rewind to the year 2013 when McKinsey Global published its paper on 12 transformative technologies that will impact “business, life and the global economy”. Viewed five years later, the report is affirmed with startling accuracy since advances in mobile Internet, AI, IoT, Cloud, Robotics, Autonomous Driving, Next Generation Genomics, Renewable Energy, and 3D Printing is indeed changing life as we knew it to something digital, connected, convenient and thoroughly functional.

Play

When HP entered the printing industry, Canon and Epson were the top performers and HP printers were considered to be less innovative than the top performers. However, that changed since 2014 with HP’s focus on 3D printing. HP now leads the pack and in fact, according to Forbes contributor, Patrick Moorhead HP’s printing division “represents 35% of HP’s revenue and 70% of its profit”. Whether in black and white or colored, the NEW HP Jet Fusion 500/300 Series 3D Printers makes prototyping and production fast and accurate. There is a model suitable for your needs, the complexity of operations and size of the enterprise. In its infancy, consumers could only imagine applications to be in interior decor, jewelry, fashion, and tech. Currently, 3D printing is used not just to economically produce prototypes and hasten the design cycle because it allows you to “create, test, and iterate in just hours”. HP 3D printers can now produce intricate thermoplastic parts with accuracy – even for sensitive medical gadgets.

3D printing could have meaningful impact on certain consumer product categories, including toys, accessories, jewelry, footwear, ceramics, and simple apparel.” They predicted that “global sales of products in these categories could grow to $4 trillion a year (at retail prices) by 2025.”— HP report

Play

What HP did to transform the industry and gain market leadership was take 3D printers from prototyping to mainstream 3D printing scalable to your demands. This was barely two years ago but already, the demand for production-grade parts is expected to grow logarithmically, as predicted by Mckinsey. Already, it can produce polymer parts traditionally made of metal at only 20% of the cost and has been mainstreamed into the production industry. Clearly, printing has moved from crafty consumer goods to the production of a record 3 Million Multi Fusion parts last year that included:

  • medical gadgets
  • prosthetics
  • orthopedics
  • helmets
  • cameras
  • car parts and others.

The success of the]itechnology is a fusion of design, materials, and software. It has proven so successful that HP itself re-designed the manufacturing of its products around this technology with about 50% of parts created using the 3D printer. It has also impressed end-users who comprise 50% of its market with its precision and strength. Already, HP has moved from producing the printer to manufacturing the end-user products, all on account of impressive customer satisfaction and burgeoning demands.

According to the HP site, the top-of-the-line HP Jet Fusion 3D 4210 Printing Solution can produce “engineering-grade parts at up to 65% lower cost and up to 10 times faster” for up to 1000 parts per week. The mid-range HP Jet Fusion 3D 4200 Printing Solution is good for up to 699 parts per week at half the cost and ten times the speed. The newest model, HP Jet Fusion 500/300 Series 3D Printers is perfect for “product development teams, design teams, and universities”. The next question is whether it could be affordable for you and me; definitely crossing my fingers for that eventuality!

New Phishing Scam Targets WhatsApp Users

0

Users Of WhatsApp Are Targets Of The New Phishing Scam

WhatsApp users are targets of the new phishing scam. They are being sent bogus messages which are said to be from the mobile messaging service WhatsApp.

phishing scam

About The Scam

The scam is being done by cyber criminals. They send emails to WhatsApp users, complete with the company’s branding. The message say that the subscriber must pay a certain subscription fee in order to keep their messaging accounts.

Of course, the messages are not from WhatsApp. These are being sent by these cyber criminals to get information and other bank details from unsuspecting users.

The Content Of The Fake Message

According to the email, the recipients have used WhatsApp for more than a year. Because of this, they need to pay a subscription fee to keep their account. It also states that they will be able to send and receive messages again only after they pay the said subscription fee.

To pay for the subscription fee, the email recipients, or innocent scam victims, will be made to sign into a (phoney) customer portal with their mobile phone number. To add “credibility” to the email, a link to a “community of users” is added at the end for those who may have questions about their email.

WhatsApp’s Charging Model

The scam may look like an ordinary thing. But it actually runs deeper than first thought. The mobile messaging service provider did previously charge using this model. So if recipients of this particular email do not know anything about updates and what-have-yous in the cyber world, they will be convinced and swayed.

For the information of the general public, WhatsApp has ended its charging model back in January 2016. During this time, WhatsApp has announced that their services will be free for everybody. Meaning, app users will have no subscription charges or whatever kind of fees to pay.

Routers Infected With Malware By Russian Hackers

As much as 500 thousand routers have been infected with malware. This was reported to be done by Russian hackers. According to security experts, these hackers are believed to be supported by the Russian government. This has been traced back to a group said to have interfered with the recent U.S. elections.

The Malware Which Infected The Router

The malware is known as the “VPNFilter”. It can monitor and extract all of the internet traffic passing through the infected routers. The routers can also be switched-off remotely in a mass cyber attack.

malware

The infections were discovered as part of an ongoing investigation be security companies Talos and Symantec. The group of hackers is said to be the same group which was responsible for the interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. A domain and a server located in Russia were seized by the FBI. These are said to be linked to the attack.

The Hackers Responsible For The Attack

The news that the attack is believed to have originated in Russia affects the ongoing US-Russian relations.

The server the FBI seized is still receiving data from infected routers. But according to them, it can only view the IP addresses of infected routers.

The security company, Talos, which is investigating the incident said there are still a lot of “unknowns” regarding the attack. The severity of the situation made them publish details early.

Advice To The Public On What To Do

To stay safe and not have your routers infected by malware, the public is advised by experts to remember the following:

– Guard your devices against the VPNFilter malware. Use a good anti-malware program to protect all your devices.

– What to do if your router is infected: Get a new router. This is the fastest and easiest way to get rid of the malware.

– Choose a VPN which you fully trust. Although the malware infection was done via VPN, this does not mean yu should put off using VPN services. A good VPN is perfectly legal and secure. So take extra care in choosing one.

Getting To Know The WyzeCam

The WyzeCam is a low-end video camer. It does not look special, but it functions quiet well for an inexpensive device. One of its groundbreaking feature that no rivals can match. It is priced unbelievably low at $20! Other low-end cameras with the same features as the WyzeCam costs $50 at least.

How does it look like? Its outer features are not that extraordinary. It is a tiny white cube with a black eye that swivels on a base. It is based on another super cheap camera system developed by a Chinese company and sold by Xiaomi. So it may look familiar to fans of cheap gadgets.

How Wyze Labs Came Up With The Product

There are cases where companies buy products from other companies, rebrand them and produce and sell them as if it were originally theirs. In this case, Wyze Labs licensed the hardware, and made some minor changes. They then built new, and better software to power it.

The company’s aim is to develop customer software for products and sell them at very affordable prices. Wyze Labs seem to be on the right track. So let us be ready to face a future with affordable, durable, and with good quality gadgets and devices. All courtesy of Wyze Labs.

Say Goodbye to Microsoft’s Groove Music iOS and Android apps

0
Microsoft Groove

The Groove Music app will no longer be available on Android and iOS. Users’ personal files however, will still be available in OneDrive.

Microsoft Groove

Last year, Microsoft shut down its Groove Music service. Now, the company has finally decided to retire its Android and iOS apps too.

It was in 2012 when the tech giant introduced the service as Xbox Music. Users were able to stream music through subscription or by purchasing through the Windows Store.

In 2017, the company discontinued the music subscription service. Users however, were still able to play music stored and synchronized on OneDrive. Microsoft also started encouraging users to transfer to Spotify as an alternative. Users were allowed to move their playlists and music collections to the popular streaming app.

Now, in a support page update, Microsoft explains that the Groove apps are going to be retired on December 1. “After that date, the apps won’t work and should be uninstalled.” It will also be no longer available for download.

So what will happen to the personal files?

Microsoft has assured users that they will still be available in OneDrive. “You can access OneDrive online or through the OneDrive app on any supported device.”

Additionally, music and playlists are still playable in Windows 10 Groove Music apps on PC, Xbox, or Windows Phone.
