Almost ‘all modern computers’ affected by cold boot attack, researchers warn

Security researchers have discovered a flaw with nearly all modern computers that allow potential hackers to steal sensitive information from your locked devices. The attack only takes about five minutes to pull off, if the hacker has physical access to the computer, F-Secure principal security consultant Olle Segerdahl said in a statement Thursday. Cold boot attacks can steal data on a computer’s RAM, where sensitive information is briefly stored after a forced reboot.

‘Pokémon Go’ saw a 35 percent growth this summer

Pokémon Go remains one of the most recognizable mobile games around, but it definitely experienced periods of user decline over the past couple of years after it took the world by storm. While not everyone who used to play the game picked it up again, it sounds like this past summer has been good to it — according to Niantic, it saw a 35 percent increase in active usage since May. That’s in line with a SuperData report from June, which said that the game had its highest active user count in May since its debut in 2016.

Loyal Android Wear users are dismayed that the first new Qualcomm silicon for smartwatches in three years uses ancient technology – and won’t offer the gains in performance they were hoping for. Qualcomm has launched its Snapdragon 3100 system on a chip for smartwatches, the first platform update since the 2100 in early 2016. Qualcomm had trailed the announcement by describing it as the first smartwatch chip built “from the ground up”. But it doesn’t appear to be as radical as some had hoped.

One of the most powerful ‘Fortnite’ guns is no more

It’s the end of an era in Fortnite… not that some players will necessarily mind. As part of a relatively minor update, Epic Games has quietly “vaulted” (that is, retired) the Drum Gun. While the weapon has only been available since July, it caused no small amount of havoc when it premiered. Its 50-round capacity and high rate of fire meant that you could not only take out multiple opponents (certainly unshielded ones) with a single magazine, for starters. It could also create misery for anyone building a structure, since you could easily unload on someone’s wall and still have ammo to finish off your opponent. And did we mention it was relatively easy to find?

For the past few years, Google has been considering how to transform the Uniform Resource Locator system into something that scales more effectively for the modern web.

Civilization VI is coming to the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is getting a big dose of strategy later this year. Today, 2K announced that Civilization VI is coming to the portable console, and the game is due to launch on November 16th. The Switch version looks to be the full game, and it will even come bundled with some of the later additions to the game, including the Viking, Poland, Australia, and Persia and Macedon content packs. It’ll also feature co-op and competitive play for up to four people playing wirelessly.

Rockstar Games Reveals New Plot Details for ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ (Exclusive)

Josh Bass, art director at Rockstar San Diego, and Aaron Garbut, director of art at Rockstar North, caught up with The Hollywood Reporter to offer exclusive information about the hotly anticipated game and the gang of outlaws at the core of its story. “Dutch’s presence loomed over the original Red Dead Redemption, and his influence on events was a big inspiration for the setting and direction of Red Dead Redemption 2,” Bass tells THR. “We all wanted to know more about him and the gang — what was it like riding in that gang? What led them to the events of the original game? What happened to them along the way?”

Why Starlink might be the best Star Fox game in decades

When Ubisoft’s E3 trailer for Starlink: Battle for Atlas ended with a tease for a Nintendo crossover, I was delighted — but I wasn’t impressed. The sound of Fox McCloud’s distinctive radio chatter spurred my nostalgia, but my initial impression was the same. Ubisoft’s space-faring toys-to-life game wasn’t going to be a real Star Fox game. It wasn’t until I played the game for myself at a preview event that I realized how true that prediction really was. Starlink: Battle for Atlas isn’t a follow-up to Nintendo’s beloved space shooter — so far, it’s better.

This week, Krebs on Security revealed that mSpy leaked the data of millions of paying customers online, including passwords, call logs, text messages, contacts, notes, location data and even Apple iCloud usernames and authentication tokens. mSpy is software that can be installed on devices and used to snoop on kids, partners and more. The company has since taken the database down.

Genesis Essentia Going Into Production As Brand’s Priciest Car

Genesis beautified this year’s New York Auto Show by introducing the Essentia, a drop-dead gorgeous electric coupe with a curvaceous carbon fiber body featuring butterfly doors. While most concepts don’t ever get to see the light of production day, we are happy to report that won’t be the grand tourer’s case. Hyundai’s premium arm has reiterated its plans to put the Essentia into production. Expect it to go on sale in either 2021 or 2022 at the latest.

When you win a match in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, you’re rewarded with a coveted chicken dinner. For most players, this prize is virtual but for others, celebrating a win with a delicious greasy snack between games is a very real thing. This can quickly make your keyboard or controller pretty gross. Luckily, Xbox players have a solution for that problem and it’s the new grease-proof Xbox One controller.

Fortnite Update 5.40 Now Live; Patch Notes Include High Stakes, Grappler, Challenges, And More

As previously confirmed, the headliner for this update is the High Stakes event, which lets players compete in a heist scenario. As part of this limited-time mode, a new traversal tool has also been introduced called the Grappler. This weapon lets players launch themselves around the map, which is useful in both jumping into combat or escaping quickly. There are also new High Stakes challenges. High Stakes introduces a new LTM called The Getaway, in which Victory Royale is achieved by obtaining one of four Jewels that spawn on the map and safely escaping in a Getaway Van. Carrying a Jewel will grant you health and shields over time, but your movement will be slowed by 10%.

WildStar Developer Carbine Studios Shuts Down

Carbine Studios, the developer of the massively multiplayer online game WildStar, is shutting down, Kotaku has learned. Fifty people will lose their jobs in the process, according to a person briefed on the shutdown. The game will also come to a close. The following video is the trailer for the game, RIP WildStar. The Google Maps feature we’ve all been dying for is finally almost here

The feature, currently in testing, is called “Current Trip,” Android Police explains. What it does is to allow Google Maps users to return to the navigation route they’ve just set up in Google Maps without losing it. What happens in Google Maps now is that you can’t use the app to perform other searches without interrupting the trip you’re on if you’re already using navigation. But, Google is testing a way to return to your previous driving directions even after you’ve used Google Maps for something else, like searching for a nearby restaurant.

Snap launches new styles of Spectacles that look more like traditional sunglasses

If the main hangup that’s kept you from purchasing Snap’s Spectacles has been their design, two new models that the company is introducing today might eliminate those hesitations. Snap has just announced the new Veronica and Nico styles of Spectacles 2. They contain all the same features and recording quality improvements as the model first introduced in April, but this time inside a more traditional look. It maybe won’t be quite so obvious that you’re wearing Spectacles anymore.

Audi kills its manual-transmission cars: How America lost its love for the stick shift

The luxury automotive brand, part of Volkswagen Group, confirmed that it will no longer offer any manual-transmission vehicles in the U.S. beginning with the 2019 model year. The final Audi models offered with a stick-shift variant were the 2018 A4 sedan and A5 coupe, Audi spokeswoman Amanda Koons said.

Fortnite Mobile Players Have Figured Out a Way to Predict the Path and Final Location of the Cube

It has been theorized that the cube will eventually end up in, or near, Loot Lake, and mobile players using the lowest graphics settings may have now confirmed it. According to a Reddit post that has gained a huge amount of traction, playing on these low settings allows players to see patches of grass that indicate where the cube has been and where it will be in the future. The incident happened in California, where a self-driving Lexus was moving slowly as it attempted to find an opening to merge onto a highway, Sunnyvale’s Lawrence Expressway. As it moved at approximately 1mph, it was struck by a Nissan Leaf (a popular model of electric car) which was travelling at 15mph.

Samsung might reveal a foldable phone in November

Waiting for Samsung’s foldable phone has been like waiting for the Yeti: You see a blurry, probably fake photo here and there, but the real thing never seems to show up. But this year might be different. This is according to Samsung’s CEO of mobile DJ Koh, who told CNBC that it’s “time to deliver” this long-awaited device.

Towards the final stages of the fourth match, in the midst of a tense battle, players began to experience an unusual floating feeling. Turns out, it wasn’t nerves – they were actually flying. The footage has been clipped on Twitch, and as you can see, it’s pretty weird.

Skype rolls back its redesign by ditching stories, squiggles and over-the-top color

Just over a year after Skype introduced a colorful, Snapchat-inspired makeover which included its own version of “stories,” the company says it’s now going to refocus on simplicity – and it’s ditching stories along the way. The redesign had been met with a lot of backlash. Skype had clearly wanted to appeal to a more youthful demographic with its update, but in doing so, it cluttered the user experience with features no one had asked for or needed.

Japan to conduct first test as part of space elevator project

A team of researchers from Japan’s Shizuoka University and other institutions will conduct the first test in space this month as part of a project to build a space elevator, Japan’s The Mainichi reported last week. The space elevator essentially ferries people and cargo shipments in an elevator car travelling on a cable connecting Earth to a space station.

Heck, you can even snatch a plane out of the sky and thrust it at a helicopter or derail a train.
