People tagging now on Flickr

Facebook isn’t the only one that knows how to tag people.

Flickr, a popular image-hosting Web site that allows users share personal photographs, has added a new feature that’ll surely make it better for its users.

The Yahoo-owned company finally decided that its high-time to integrate their notes feature and tagging tools for photographs with people.

Users who want to tag their friends on Flickr have two options to do so. They can tag a person by typing a person’s name or email in the “People in this photo” or they can draw a bounding box on the person’s face, just like when creating a note so when uses mouse over a photo, they can see who a person is by what box they are in.

Unlike Facebook’s tagging feature than allows all your friend’s to tag you, Flickr gives you the option to disallow anyone from tagging you in photos.

Hmmn, I know Facebook and Flickr aren’t competitors so I can’t actually compare them, but wouldn’t it be cool if Facebook had that feature too? I know I’d be the first to use that. 😉

Facebook: Give 10-cent songs as gifts

If you’re fan of Facebook’s gift-giving feature which allows you to send gifts like birthday cakes and pints of beer to your friends, then you’ll like this one.

Confirmed today, Facebook is allowing friends to send 10-cent Web songs which can be streamed online, and 90-cent songs which can be downloaded as gifts from online retailer Lala.

“Instead of just selling an MP3, we’re selling an event for someone,” Lala co-founder Bill Nguyen told The Associated Press.

How do you do this? You can buy credits worth 10 cents each using your credit card.

Of course, those 90-cent songs will be of higher quality than those 10-cent streaming songs so if you don’t want your friend to think you’re holding out on her, better shell out a few more cents ;). And don’t worry about running out of songs coz you’ll have over 8 million songs from all major recording companies as well as independent labels to choose from.

The feature which will be available starting tomorrow afternoon will only be available in the U.S. A limited group of Facebook users will first be able to use it (perhaps for more testing?) and then later on, will be available to all U.S. Facebook users.

Plastic Logic’s reader offers Wi-fi, Powerpoint and Excel support

Another player in the Ebook market dominated by Amazon’s Kindle and Sony reader will be coming in from Plastic Logic.

Yesterday, the company announced that they are preparing to release an ebook reader that’s aimed at business professionals.

Prototypes of the QUE were demonstrated last month at the DEMOFall 08 conference. The device is set to make another er- public appearance at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 7 next year.

So what makes this electronic reader different from its competitors?

The QUE’s 10-inch diagonal screen does not only show black and white electronic display, it also boasts a capability to support PowerPoint and Excel documents, which cannot be found on others.

Like the Kindle DX, the QUE includes connection to a 3G wireless network for downloading books. But unlike its competitor, the QUE also comes in with an integrated Wi-Fi.

Plastic Logic plans to offer content through an online QUE store powered by Barnes & Noble. No word yet as to when the device will be available in the market and how much it will cost.

“More than an eReader, QUE means business,” Richard Archuleta, chief executive of Plastic Logic, said in a statement.

Hmmn, I wonder what Kindle has to say to this. 🙂

Adam Lambert single leaked

There won’t be any miracles happening for Adam Lambert right now– at least in the form of turning back time and preventing the leakage of his newest single.

The single, “Time for Miracles”, is the highly anticipated soundtrack song from the upcoming disaster flick “2012”. The song’s music video was set to premiere on the big screen when it runs at screenings of Michael Jackson’s “This is It” documentary film on October 27.

Rob Cavallo, who was said to have collaborated with Lambert on his debut album, produced the song which came out prematurely on the web. A copy of “Time for Miracles” appeared in iTunes Italy and ultimately made its way to YouTube where people could download it for free.

Lambert’s record label, 19 Recordings/RCA Records, had their hands full trying to take down copies off the Web but a few can still be found as of this writing.

Lambert, who took American Idol by storm through his unique image and incredible voice, is set to release his debut album on November 23 which he recorded with a number of hitmakers like Pink, Linda Perry and Max Martin.

U2 concert to be available live on YouTube

I’m feeling quite music-ky today so here’s another news from the music industry which is still tech-related. 😉

While Adam Lambert’s camp is doing their best to keep the leaked single off YouTube and the rest of the Web, Irish rock superstars U2 announced that their much-anticipated concert will be streamed lived on video-sharing Web site.

The concert, which will take place on Sunday, will be held at Pasadena Rose Bowl in California.

“The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time,” Paul McGuinness, U2’s manager, said in a statement on the band’s website. “Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 — this time U2 can go to them, globally.” (He sure got that one right J )

The concert will be available for fans in Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain and the United States. It can be accessed on the U2’s channel at YouTube.

Chris Maxcy, director of YouTube partner development, shared just how happy they are.

“YouTube is thrilled to be able to provide our global audience with a live streaming performance from one of the world’s greatest bands,” he wrote in a blog post.

Well, YouTube isn’t the only one that’s thrilled about this, I’m pretty certain of that. 🙂

Apple earns highest ever quarterly profit

On another celebratory note, let’s congratulate Apple for earning its most profitable quarter ever, exceeding analysts’ predictions.

So just how profitable did the company get? To give you some (impressive) numbers, Apple announced that its net revenue for the quarter ending September 30 is $9.87 billion, with a net profit of $1.67 billion.

That’s very good news considering this last quarter was a hard time for lots of people, especially businesses.

“In recessionary times it shows what Apple was counting on: Consumers focus on bang for the buck,” Michael Gartenberg, vice president of strategy and analysis at Interpet said. “Consumers are asking, where is the value I get for the dollar? Even if it’s not the cheapest, is the stuff I buy today still going to be useful down the road?”

Overall, the corporate giant’s quarterly profit increased to a whopping 46 percent, that’s 21 percent higher than last year with just 25 percent.

Sony PS3 finally get the top slot

Yep, after three years of trying to win out over its competitors, the Sony Playstation 3 was finally crowed the monthly top-selling video game console according to NPD.

The video game analyst reported that Sony took the first place in the most number of units sold with 491, 800 PS2 units in September. Nintendo’s Wii took the second place with 462, 800 units and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 came in last with 352, 600 units sold.

Although Sony’s numbers aren’t that much far from Nintendo’s, the news is still a reason to celebrate as this somehow proves that people are still willing to buy the PS3 – they were just waiting for its price to be a little lower. So when Sony unveiled the $299 PS3 Slim (despite it still being a hundred bucks higher than the Wii), gamers flocked to purchase units.

Will PS3 stay on top? I’m guessing it will, as long as Sony keeps giving awesome software to go with the unit, and of course, keep its price under the $300 level. What do you think?

Google’s gift: Free in-flight Wi-fi

Yup, Google is feeling quite generous as the gift-giving season is slowly approaching.

The internet giant has teamed up with Virgin America to bring free Wi-Fi Internet to the latter’s flights from November 10, 2009 to January 15, 2010.

The internet service itself will be provided by Gogo, an in-flight broadband provider owned by Aircell. And as Information Week put it, Google will be “picking up the tab” during the two-month period.

But wait! Just because it’s free doesn’t mean people can do just about anything they want on the Web. Certain limitations have been enforced by Gogo’s Terms of Service to ensure that passengers can get the best in-flight web experience. These restrictions include requiring users not to display offensive content that that can be seen by fellow passengers and the prohibit of use of VOIP applications like Skype.

According to the company, VoIP blocking was implemented to manage bandwidth use and to prevent passengers from annoying each other with their phone chatter. 🙂

EmoBracelet alerts traders when to take a break

If you’re an online stock trader and you’re prone to raging fits hysterics being frazzled (which is to say, most of the time 🙂 ), then this gadget is for you.

The concept, coming out of the Dialogues Incubator and developed with Philips Design, this emotion-sensing system shows traders when their tempers are running high and when its time to take a break (before they go over the edge 🙂 ).

Dubbed the Rationalizer, it consists of two components: the EmoBracelet and the EmoBowl. The bracelet measures the user’s emotional level through a galvanic skin response sensor.

If you’re slowly turning into a basket case, the dynamic light pattern on the bracelet or on the bowl will also become more intense, showing more elements and moving in higher speeds. The color also changes from a soft yellow (that’s when you’re still keeping your cool) to orange and eventually to a deep red (that’s when you definitely need some time out and the people around should start hedging away from you 🙂 ).

Geert Christiaansen, Director Business Development at Philips Design, shares how this project came about.

“In our talks with the people working on the ABN AMRO Dialogues Incubator, we were challenged to apply our competences to another domain, the domain of online trading for home investors. In this joint project we started to tackle this challenge. It proved to be both enjoyable and rewarding, leading to this thought-provoking result,” he said.

But while this device is designed for online traders, I don’t see why you can’t give this to your mom as a gift — especially when you’re prone to coming home at 4 am in the morning. 😉

Sony PS3 250GB available in November

Gamers rejoice!

Its definitely time for PS3 owners to celebrate coz running out of space in their units won’t be a problem anymore.

Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that starting November 3, a new 250GB model of the PlayStation 3 Slim will now be available.

The unit will be sold for $349.99, that’s $50 higher than the 120GB model of the PS3 Slim.

Now, users won’t have to delete or transfer to another storage device their much-loved movies, music, photos and of course, game installs/saves once they run out space.

The announcement from Sony follows the release of the same 250GB model in UK and Australia so there’s hardly any surprise there. But hey? It’s still a reason to celebrate! 😉
