With just 552 apps when it was first opened less than two years ago, the App Store now boasts 100,000 apps according to an announcement by Apple.

“The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said. “The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating.”

The app store now has 21 categories with content being downloaded a total of “well over” two billion times and still the world’s most popular applications store.

The pace of development for the apps is also growing though. On its first year, developers were able to create 65,000 apps. In the last four months though, already 35,000 apps were added to the growing list.

“With 10,000 downloads a day, worldwide customer response to our I Am T-Pain App has exceeded our wildest expectations,” Jeff Smith, CEO of Smule, said. “The App Store has given us a unique opportunity to create and grow a very successful business, and we’re looking forward to an exciting future.”

Congratulations  to Apple and of course, the app developers. 🙂
