Apple’s new MacBook Air blows the regular MacBook out of the water on price and power

Apple finally gave the MacBook Air a big upgrade. I only spent a few minutes with it Tuesday, but I already think it’s the Apple laptop that most people will probably buy. By size, it fits right between the regular MacBook and the MacBook Pro. In cost, it’s cheaper than both. It starts at $1,199 — admittedly more expensive than the original $999 MacBook Air — but it’s more powerful than the smaller standard MacBook, which starts at $1,299. It’s sort of weird, and I can’t think of many reasons to buy the smaller and more expensive MacBook, unless you just want a bit more portability. Given that iPad sales have continued to outpace Mac sales, however, its strongest competition might be Apple’s new iPad Pros.

Apple iPad Pro specs compared: how the iPads stand out

Apple announced new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros in New York today, which now come with Face ID, a USB-C charging port, and a new “Liquid Retina” display. Aesthetically, they’ve got slimmer bezels that only come in black, like the new MacBook Airs. The black bezels, when paired with the Smart Keyboard Folio, make the iPad Pro look closer to a laptop than it ever has before. They also allow for the 11-inch model display to fit a bigger screen into the same overall dimensions as the prior 10.5-inch model. The iPads also lose their home buttons entirely in favor of the iOS 12 gesture controls found in Apple’s new iPhones. Swiping across the various edges of the screen now brings up the home screen, lets you switch apps, and pull up the Control Center, Notification Center, and Dock.

Apple Launches New Mac Mini: Up to 6 Cores, 64 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, & TB3

Apple on Tuesday introduced its first new small form-factor PC in four years. The new Mac mini is based on Intel’s latest Coffee Lake processors with up to six cores and improves the SFF system in almost all ways possible, making the miniature PC almost as capable as regular desktops. With that said, the considerably higher performance enabled by the new Mac mini also comes at higher price points when compared to the predecessors. Apple’s Mac mini desktops are designed for SOHO market segment as well as everyday workloads that normally do not require very capable hardware. Meanwhile, historically Apple used mobile processors for its Mac mini, which the company found good enough for the market segment. With its 2018 SFF desktops Apple is changing the game here: the company now calls its Mac mini a “workhorse” and therefore uses Intel’s custom 8th Gen Core CPUs with four or six cores operating at 4.6 GHz Turbo Boost frequency. In a bid to cool the processor down, Apple uses a brand-new cooling system featuring a blower.

The Nintendo Switch continues to be a sales success, with Nintendo’s latest financial report placing the console at nearly 23 million units sold since its launch last year. In a new earnings report, Nintendo revealed that over the last six months the Switch has managed to sell more than 5 million units, with a slight increase in sales compared to this time last year. The new numbers now mean the Switch has almost doubled sales of the Wii U, and has overtaken GameCube’s total figure.

Old School RuneScape is officially available on Android as a free-to-play release

Back in September Jagex announced that Old School RuneScape would be releasing on Android on October 30th, and lo and behold, OSR Mobile is now officially available on the Play Store as a free-to-play release. That’s right, the members beta is finally over, which means OSR Mobile no longer requires a subscription to jump in and enjoy its classic MMORPG gameplay.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Is Beautiful on Xbox One X, Deserves PC Release

In the weeks leading up to the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, much of the focus has been on Rockstar’s labor conditions. Not only have company reps repeatedly put their feet in their mouths regarding crunch and credit, but Kotaku’s own Jason Schreier wrote up a wonderful article with dozens upon dozens of sources from both past and present Rockstar staff. The conversation that’s been happening has been at least partially fruitful, and we’re all better off knowing more about how our games get made by real people. With the legitimate and serious concerns about the various Rockstar studios in mind, there’s no doubt that the countless devs who have worked hard for years on end are excited for the world to finally play the game. Let’s jump in, and see exactly what this worldwide team has been toiling over since the release of GTA V.

PC market flat, as Surface becomes a top-5 computer brand in the US

Microsoft was the fifth-biggest PC maker in the US in the third quarter of this year, according to industry advisory firm Gartner. The top spot in the US belongs to HP, with about 4.5 million machines sold, ahead of Dell at 3.8 million, Lenovo at 2.3 million, and Apple at 2 million. The gap between fourth and fifth is pretty big—Microsoft sold only 0.6 million Surface devices last quarter—but it suggests that Microsoft’s PC division is heading in the right direction, with sales 1.9 percent higher than the same quarter last year. The company pushed down to sixth place was Acer.

I’m still not sure, but here’s how Razer’s gaming phone has evolved for its second tour.

Forza Horizon 4 for Xbox One and PC

And in case you did not know, the Forza Horizon 4 has been named as a creative name sequel to Forza Horizon 3. Microsoft has announced this development onstage during the company’s E3 presentation.

Microsoft has described the Forza Horizon 4 as an arcade racer, keeping the more laid-back Forza Horizon series than the Forza Motorsport titles. This means that you could actually have an authentic driving experience. What makes the experience unique is that players get to enjoy the new vehicles, freedom to drive, drift and explore the cities, among others.

Apart from the cities, you get also to enjoy the vicinities of the countryside of Britain while driving the fast and luxurious cars. Playground Games has developed the new Forza Horizon game. The company has bragged the game’s dynamic season of which you would ultimately experience a dramatic gameplay.

Also, players would experience a unique effect all throughout the course of gameplay. This includes, of course, on how the world looks and how cars will drive. The racing game features what Playground Games called a “shared open world.”

In explaining such concept, Playground Games said that you would encounter other players driving other cars. This means that you would be racing against the other players in real time. The game has been optimized for Xbox One 4K firepower.

Meanwhile, Microsoft said that those subscribers of monthly Xbox Game Pass subscription would be able to access the Forza Horizon 4 with no additional fee. The game is slated to launch on October 2.

Sharp to Acquire Toshiba PC Business for 36 Million

Toshiba has agreed to relinquish its PC business to Sharp as the former exits the PC market.

Toshiba has finally put up the white flag for its PC business as it sells it to Sharp.

The deal, worth four billion yen (or about $36 million), also includes the issuance of $1.8 billion in new shares by Sharp to buy back stock from banks.

Toshiba was the first company ever to introduce a notebook PC back in 1985 and were the leaders in the market. But with the birth of smartphones and tablets, PCs went in the backseat. The company used to sell as many as 17 million PCs a year. Now, they sell as little as 1.4 million units last year.

The company also got into more trouble when Westinghouse Electric, its nuclear power division, went bankrupt. Toshiba lost $9 billion.

For consumers however, this is not the end of its PCs. Sharp actually wants to breathe new life to this technology. Now that the former is owned by Foxconn, Sharp can take focus on producing more affordable computers.

The Osaka-based company is so confident with its acquisition of Toshiba that the former issued $1.8 billion in new shares to buy back preferred stock from banks.

Sharp is expected to wrap up the acquisition in October this year.

Bethesda Softworks has finally announced that Bethesda Game Studios is working on a new game. The game is called Fallout 76, and the company has released a teaser video for fans to watch while giving them some minor details of the game.

Bethesda’s Fallout 76

A quick check of the video shows the Fallout 76’s Vault 76 imagery. You can also see an in-game character what appears to be wearing a vault jumpsuit. The character is also equipped with a Pip-Boy, and you can also see an old TV footage informing the occupants that they’ll have to rebuild society.

Another detail that you can see in the video is the decorative Reclamation Day. There’s also a gaming console showing the date is 2102, which would make this the earliest game set in the Fallout canon.

According to the game enthusiast, Fallout 76’s Vault 76 came as a surprise because it has not been revealed in the past games. And fans should be showing some excitement as early as now after Bethesda confirmed the game would be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Valve’s Steam Link Launches In Beta On Android

Avid players who have Steam accounts could now play their collection of Steam titles using their smartphone. If you are a player, you could now download Steam Link beta via Google Play. This is possible after Valve announced earlier this month that its streaming game service would be available both for iOS and Android.

Steam Link is now on Android

To use Steam Link, what you need is a a 5GHz Wi-Fi router. Based on Valve’s recommendation, you need to connect your computer to a router through an ethernet cable. After this, you need to connect your Android-powered phone using the 5GHz channel of your Wi-Fi network.

Apart from this, you also need to sit close to the router, according to Valve, so that you can maximize the 5GHz networks. By doing so, this means you can use a much higher frequencies, as opposed to the standard 2.4GHz networks.

Regarding the controller options, you can actually use any type of Bluetooth controller that’s compatible with Android or the Steam Controller. Aside from mobile devices, the Steam Link is also available on Android TV. With this, Valve is recommending that you connect your compatible device over the Ethernet as well.

Valve added that the app should also support 4K at 60fps. However, the company stressed that the quality bar is full-HD (1080p) at 60fps for most environments, and this depends on PC, router and mobile hardware, and how your network is set up.

The company also revealed its plan to rollout Steam Link on Apple’s App Store. Valve said that the such rollout is still pending as Apple is currently reviewing the process for approval.

Launched in 2015, Steam Link is actually a standalone device designed to bring Steam titles from PC to the living room.

Zamzar: Veteran Free Online File Converter Still Hot After All These Years

I discovered Zamzar quite by accident, and happily so. I received a  .numbers file and being on a PC, had to Google for a converter. I have to confess that after having my share of free online converters that didn’t deliver, I was skeptical. So what are my woes? Some of these converters have to be downloaded and installed and you know that these can bring with them malware etc. Most of the free apps will also convert up to a certain point and leave you hanging. And saving the worst for last, convert into a gibberish file. And with so many new ones popping up and disappearing into thin air, you never know if it’s going to be there the next time around. Let’s not even go to whether it will keep your data sacred.

What’s not to love? It can convert about 1200 files – an all-in-one audio, video, image, ebook, CAD, presentation, and text converter! Currently, when there are many platforms and devices, this functionality makes it extremely helpful. In the past, I would use 4-5 apps just to get everything I need on the same page. This multiple converter saves time, effort, stress and money. After all, who wants to buy a full program, something that can only be used rarely, if you can have a free one to use?

Here are a few of the popular conversions it can do: PDF to Word | PDF to Excel | FLAC to MP3 | DOC to PDF | EPUB to PDF | MP4 to MP3 |PDF to DOC | WAV to MP3 | MKV to MP4 | DJVU to PDF | JPG to Word | XPS to PDF |FLV to MP3 | MOV to MP4 | Excel to PDF | PNG to PDF | PDF to JPG | DOCX to PDF |EPUB to MOBI | MP3 to WAV | MP4 to GIF | PPT to PDF | Excel to PDF | PNG to JPG |PDF to DWG | PDF to DOCX | JPG to GIF | JPG to PNG | FLV to MP4 | Word to PDF

Conversion is fast and convenient because the file to be converted can be uploaded from your hard drive, from the cloud, and from a URL. Files up to 50 MB can be converted 100%. Files are converted once uploaded and you simply enter your email address to receive the converted file. It even saves your file online for 24 hours.

Zamzar has been around for around 12 years and it has not stopped growing. The most interesting development is it can convert to files proprietary to Adobe and now has video support. The sheer number of files it can convert is astounding: https://www.zamzar.com/conversionTypes.php.Currently, it can now convert video from various video sharing websites.

Bungie Releases Destiny’s Warmind DLC For PC, PS4, & Xbox One

Game developer Bungie has launched the second DLC expansion pack for Destiny’s Warmind. The game’s DLC pack contains several contents that include armor, weapons, Escalation Protocol mode, Spire of Stars Raid Lair, and locations, among others.

Destiny 2 Warmind DLC

The game is expected to be released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One gaming consoles. Thus, players should expect more details about the game in the coming weeks. With Destiny 2’s Warmind DLC which has been released last May 8, Bungie has also rolled out the game’s 1.2.0 update.

Bungie said that the Destiny’s Warmind new content would only be accessible for players who purchased the game or those players who owned the game’s expansion pass. But other players have noted that you don’t actually have to purchase Warmind to have reason to check in on Destiny 2.

The game’s updated version 1.2.0 would also kick off Season 3 of Destiny 2. This would bring several features to the game such as private matches in Crucible; an emote wheel, a new Ranked Crucible setup, changes to numerous Exotic weapons, as well the long-awaited expansion to Vault space, among others.

BioWare Talks Anthem And The Lack Of Mass Effect: Andromeda DLC

Game developer BioWare has teased fans of the upcoming updates for its popular game Anthem. The company’s new game is slated to be released soon. With this, a company official has released studio updates which include, among others, the Mass Effect: Andromeda.

BioWare to release Anthem in 2019?

According to BioWare general manager Casey Hudson, the developer was not able to bring new DLC for Andromeda.

“As you know, we were not able to deliver story DLC for Andromeda—this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games,” Hudson said in a blog post.

He added that when BioWare released the Mass Effect: Andromeda, there was a strong call from players for a story DLC that involves the fate of quarians. Hudson did not further issue some specifics but he admits that it impacted how the company worked on Anthem.

Anthem is actually an open-world action game. The upcoming game is slated to be released this year. It can be recalled that last January, EA had announced that Anthem’s release date would be in early 2019.

“That experience ultimately became a defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission. We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games,” Hudson explained.

“And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we’re evolving together,” he added.

With this, Hudson said that they are working speedily on the development of Anthem. He wants the players to enjoy playing the game in a fresh world story and characters.

“It will be unlike anything you’ve played, but if we do it right, it will feel very distinctly BioWare,” Hudson stressed, who worked as a director on the original Mass Effect trilogy including the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

In case you don’t know, Hudson left BioWare shortly and returned in 2017 following the company’s upheaval.
