Facebook now on PS3 via firmware update

If you’re a PS3 gamer AND a Facebook addict, start smiling now coz the new Firmware 3.10 has just been released.

“Launching Facebook for the PlayStation community is a natural fit for our goal of delivering unparalleled connected experiences – from connecting our community to each other to connecting our customers to great entertainment downloaded from the PlayStation Store,” Susan Panico, senior director of PlayStation Network, said in the press release from Sony.

“As we pass the third anniversary of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network, we’re excited to deepen the social experiences of PlayStation Network and kick-off the first phase of our integration with Facebook.”

With Firmware 3.10, owners of device can now “brag to friends about their domination as a gamer”. The update also lets gamers share information with their friends in Facebook on games they just purchased and even share unlocked trophies everytime they sync their Trophies.

Game developers also have something to smile about. With the system update, they can now set up “trigger points” in their games, providing PS3 system users the option to publish game-related info on their Facebook pages.

“We’re excited to connect Facebook’s 300 million active users with the PlayStation 3, enabling players to connect and share their game experiences with friends,” Ethan Beard, Facebook Developer Network director said.

The new Firmware 3.10 also brings in a customized and enhanced PlayStation Network Friends List as well as a new way to view your stored photos – displaying them in a grid format for easier access.

No Sony Reader Daily Edition this Christmas for some

The company announced today that the Sony Reader Daily Edition is now available for preorder. However, Sony’s Web site also says the orders will ship December 18 through January 8 – not a good news for those expecting to have their hands on one before the holidays.

According to the website, “actual delivery date cannot be guaranteed”.

A company spokesman said that the number of people who signed up to find out about the device’s availability has exceeded Sony’s expectation. It will try to deliver as much as it can before the holidays but it will have to be on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We’re deeply concerned we won’t have enough to get them under the Christmas tree, so we’re giving a range and telling people upfront that we may not get to everybody over Christmas. We may be able to do it, we just don’t want to over-promise,” Steve Haber, president of its digital reading division, told the FT .

The Sony Reader Daily Edition is being sold for US$399.

Casio unveils new tough and rugged camera

Casio ExilimIf you’re looking for a camera that can handle pretty much all the dangers of outdoor shoots but still look good, look no further.

Today, Casio unveiled it first ruggedized point-and-shoot camera, the Casio Exilim G EX-G1. Its built to withstand drops up to 7 feet, dustproof, freeze-proof to 14 degrees F, and waterproof to depths of 10 feet.

If that isn’t proof enough of the camera’s toughness, the EX-G1’s frame is built from stainless steel with an inner body constructed of polycarbonate reinforced with fiberglass. The camera’s lens is also covered with a waterproof seal and the battery and MicroSD card is protected by a pressure-sealed case.

With all of those tough packaging, the 12.1-megapixel EX-G1 however weighs only 5.4 ounces and measures just 0.78 inch in thickness, making it the slimmest rugged camera.

Other features of the Casio Exilim G EX-G1 include a 2.5-inch LCD, 3x zoom lens with a focal range of 38mm to 114mm, face detection and 16:9 Wide Movie Format. It also has new feature that allows the camera automatically snap photos at fixed intervals, and then stitch them together into a time-lapse video.

The Casio Exilim G EX-G1 will be available in the market on December for $300.

Webby Awards’ top 10 Internet moments of the decade

The last decade has been, more than ever, a period of great milestones on the internet.

As the year is coming to end, the New York-based International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences bestows its annual Webby Awards to some of the most notable happenings in the digital world.

“The Internet is the story of the decade because it was the catalyst for change in not just every aspect of our everyday lives, but in everything from commerce and communication to politics and pop culture,” David-Michel Davies, the executive director of the Webby Awards, said.

“The recurring theme among all of the milestones on our list is the Internet’s capacity to circumvent old systems and put more power into the hands of ordinary people,” he said.

The top 10 most influential Internet moments of the decade according to the Webby Awards are as follows:

– Craigslist online classified site expands outside San Francisco (2000)

– the launch of Google AdWords (2000)

– the launch of online encyclopedia Wikipedia (2001)

– the shutdown of file-sharing site Napster (2001)

– Google’s initial public offering (2004)

– the online video revolution led by YouTube (2006)

– Facebook opens to non-college students and Twitter launches (2006)

– Apple’s iPhone debuts (2007)

– the use of the Internet in the US presidential campaign (2008)

– the use of Twitter during the Iranian election protests (2009)

The 14th Annual Webby Awards will be announced on April 2010.

World’s fastest graphic card from AMD

Well, according to the company that is. But with the features and amazing power this graphic card packs in, it’s not that hard to believe.

The ATI Radeon HD 5970 incorporates some of today’s coolest characteristics graphic cards must have, including ATI’s Eyefinity which enables a single card to support up to six monitors at a maximum resolution of 7680 x 1600. A monitor with a DisplayPort connector however, is needed for this to be fully enjoyed.

The HD 5970 is also equipped with an HD Audio controller, 5 teraflops of power, DirectX11 capable and efficiency tools that will take the load off your power consumption. The ATI Overdrive lets you overclock your graphic cards without any performance caps. The company however, doesn’t extend its warranty to cover damage caused by overclocking.

So want one? Be ready to shell out as much as $600 for this one. Alienware is among the first companies to include the cards in their new PCs.

China Mobile still in talks with Apple

Even after two years since the network operator and Apple started the negotiations for the iPhone, the two companies are still at it. China Mobile however assures that public that it WILL be happening.

Wang Jianzhou, chairman and CEO of China Mobile, said at the GSM Association’s Mobile Asia Congress in Hong Kong said that they are aware of the iPhone’s popularity among young customers.

“China Mobile has continued negotiations with Apple to introduce the iPhone on China Mobile’s network,” he said.

Wang told reporters at the conference they are indeed serious in pursuing with the deal with Apple, but it also wants to focus on expanding consumer options on different handsets.

“We really are still in talks with Apple. In our negotiations in the past, we insisted on sticking to our conditions,” Wang said, according to the blog The Money Times.

“We are still very sincere about completing this negotiation.”

China Unicom, China Mobile’s number one competitor, started selling the iPhone in the country at the end of last month.

Google Earth iPhone app version 2.0 now available

After over a year on its first release, Google released an updated version of the popular Google Earth iPhone app.

Version 2.0 adds several new features including an a new way for icon selection and a customized map feature.

Touching an icon causes it glow, making it easier for use. If your finger hits more than one icon, the app takes you to a new screen showing you a list of icons and lets you choose which one you want to select.

The customized map feature allows you to create these using My Maps on your computer. You can add a satellite map or image and other layers (like route lines, itinerary) and then view it on your iPhone or iPod touch.

This new version of the Google Earth app now also supports 31 languages, compared to the original version’s 18.

Google Earth 2.0 is available for download for free from the iPhone App store.

Chrome OS demo set on Thursday

An event hosted by Google will showcase the company’s development with the Chrome OS. It will take place on Thursday at Google’s headquarters.

First announced last July, the news created a buzz over the web as the search giant decided to venture into this new territory.

“Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small Netbooks to full-size desktop systems,” Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director has both said in the company’s blog post confirming the OS’s existence.

According to an invitation sent to members of the press today, Google will “show a few demos” at the event. Pichai will also be giving a presentation, as well as Google Chrome OS’s engineering director Matthew Papakipos.

Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm now on Xbox Live

Today, Microsoft brings in the Xbox Live Fall update which introduces access to social networking sites Twitter and Facebook and internet radio service Last.fm.

With the new Twitter feature, gamers can now post tweets through Xbox Live. Gamers can now also share photos and in-game screenshots , as well as view friends’ updates with the new Facebook add-on. Both the Twitter and Facebook tabs can be found in the My Community channel on Xbox Live’s dashboard.

And with the addition of Last.fm on Xbox Live, owners now have access to streaming internet radio service and features such as tailored listening habits and the Visual Radio slideshow that compiles fan-submitted photos.

The update also adds Zune video which gives gamers access to buy or rent instant streaming 1080p HD video and 5.1 surround sound. How cool is that?

The Twitter, Last.fm, and Facebook features requires an Xbox Live Gold membership.

T-Mobile confirms workers sold customer data

Earlier this month, T-Mobile experienced a major outage that left customers unable to send/receive text messages. Now T-Mobile is faced yet again with a problem that will definitely add insult to the company’s already extensive injury.

A company spokesman confirmed that T-Mobile UK workers sold personal details about customer’s contracts to third parties. Competitors of the company bought the info (including customers’ end-of-contract dates) and then called customers – to offer them deals with the new operator – before their contracts expire.

The company already notified England’s Information Commission, saying that the activity was done without their knowledge.

Commissioner Christopher Graham told BBC his office will prosecute the individuals responsible.
