Twitter targeted by DDoS attack causing massive outages

A couple of outages bugged the micro-blogging site Twitter yesterday, resulting to a worldwide down-time and slow service across its mobile apps and Twitter’s very own website.

The San Francisco based company said that the outage was caused by a “cascading bug”. This outage is the biggest problem that they have faced in recent months.

Ugnazi claimed that it was their team that caused the disruption when they launched a DDoS or denial-of-service attack against Twitter.

Ugnazi is a hacker group whose claim to fame prior to this attack was getting into Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince’s personal Gmail account. They said that they attacked Twitter because the company supported the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act.

One security analyst believes that Ugnazi was the sole reason why Twitter went down. He believes that other factors may have helped the group.

“It was mere coincidence. The backend of Twitter is having issues, which is unrelated to the very small attack,” he said.

The first outage occurred at [3:30] PM GMT and lasted until [5:00] PM GMT. The second disruption occurred at [6:00] PM GMT.

The outage leaves a huge mark on Twitter’s service and reliability.

Do you believe that Twitter can bounce back from this incident and protect their site from further outside attack?
