The invitation-only social networking site Pinterest is gradually becoming viral. Interests have sky-rocketed since its developers opened the latter and figures have shown that they are taking the world by storm.

In a report by the Experian Marketing Services, Pinterest is now the third most popular social networking site behind Twitter and Facebook. They note that traffic to the site has peaked at 50 percent between February of this year and January of the same.

The site received 21.5 million hits during the week ending Jan. 28, 2012. It was 30 times bigger than that of the last week of July of the previous year.

According to the report, 60% of users are female and 55% are between ages 25 and 44.  The social networking site is also more popular in California and Texas than other states in the US.

They also note that 91% of all online adults now use social media regularly as opposed from years ago when the same age group was oblivious to technology. 28% of smartphone owners watch video on their devices every month and revenue for email marketing campaigns that include a “friends and family” element is two times higher, on average, than for other campaigns.

Zdnet says that those who are into SME’s should download the free report.
