Global downloads from Apple’s App Store reaches 23 billion

Kudos to Apple Inc. as their online store the iOS App Store has reached a new milestone as they were able to achieve a massive 25 billion downloads since their inception.

Chinese Chunli Fu was the 25th billion downloader as she downloaded the free version of the “where’s My Water?” puzzle game. She won a $10,000 iTunes card for her milestone making click.

Apple senior vice president Eddie Cue said in a press release, “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.”

Apple has doubled its numbers since last July when the App Store was able to amass 15 million downloads. Apple’s recent acquisition of Chomp should help navigating through the App Store easier as it aims to streamline the process.

Apple also reported that there were a total of 550,000 apps in the App Store. 170,000 of which were developed for the iPad. At the same time, they also announced that there are over 315 million iOS devices around the world.

Sidenote: Google’s Android Market passed the 10 billion download work last December.
