Goodbye charging cables, hello to a much better Wireless Charging! Always in the need to charge but doesn’t want to spend the time on the sofa while using it? Well, wireless charging is the answer to that. Imagine, no need to deal and have to fight with your charging cable? Just simply place it on the charging pad then you’re good to go! It really sounds fascinating and this is the new charging experience

Although, it has been around for some years now, it’s struggled with mass adoption. For the most part, the gadgets you can buy are a bit bulky aftermarket cases. Or some charging pads only work with one or two major standards.

But the good news, these barriers to a wireless charging world are falling apart. And advances to the state of wireless charging are bringing us closer to a cord-free charging life than before. But how can that happen? By doubling today’s wireless charging pad speeds and separately charging phones over the air.

The company Powermat is on the move. They’re working on a new wireless charging standard that can power up phones more than 2.5 times faster. Today, we’re only at the maximum 15-watt output but time will come, we’ll be able to have a 40-watt output. But seeing those faster speeds will really take time. “When we talk about the next generation, we’re talking about 30 watts [of power]”, said by Powermat’s product VP, Aya Kantor. Although it’s not 40, that’s still good enough to charge your phone from 0-100% in just 25 minutes!

Now, about charging at a distance, companies such as Energous’ Mid-field WattUP are going to make it happen. They’re starting to bring over-the-air wireless charging to a lot of devices. Not just your smartphone, which means you may also charge laptops, smartwatches, earpods, fitness band and so much more. As long as it is a paired device, within range and in need of a top-up.

So, until wireless charging pad speeds double up and over-the-air chargers arrive. Then I think we just have to stick around with cables or bulky cases for now.

Wireless chip from Sony capable of 6.3Gbps

Sony and the Tokyo Institute of Technology are currently developing a router that is 14 times faster in transferring speeds of the current commercial routers. Pegged at 6.3Gbps, this router can boost your Wi-Fi experience to an all new level.

 

According to a press release, “implementation of this technology will enable users to transmit and receive data at much higher speeds between mobile devices without the need for cable connections. This technology will also enable users to enjoy uncompressed high-quality video streaming from a mobile device to a display.”

Imagine being able to transmit an uncompressed Blu-ray copy of a movie from your handheld to your television?

Unfortunately, this is still under development so we might not be seeing this device anytime soon.

Professor Akira Matsuzawa, Associate professor Kenichi Okada, and others from the Tokyo Institute of Technology are developing the radio frequency chip. Sony on the other hand is responsible for creating the low-power baseband chip and manages overall chip improvement.

The proposed system operates on a millimeter wave 60GHz band that employs 802.15.3c standards.
