Blizzard: World of Warcraft loses a million subscribers

Activision Blizzard’s World of Warcraft once lorded it over the MMORPG market. The once king of the hill has seen a huge decline in their subscribers over the recent months due to the release of Diablo III and other games.

Still, World of Warcraft, otherwise known as WoW, still has a handful of loyal gamers that stick to the game.

Unfortunately, according to, the fabled game has lost about a million subscribers. WoW subscribers dropped from 10.2 million to 9.1 million this quarter.

Activision Blizzard announced the loss during their second-quarter earnings report. They said that earnings dropped to $185 million 45% down from the same period of 2011.

But the future still looks bright for the franchise as the company is set to release their latest expansion pack this September. The new pack – entitled Mists Of Pandaria – would hopefully regain the lost shimmer in WoW’s armor.

Despite of the subscriber loss, Activision Blizzard says that World of Warcraft is still the number one subscription based MMO game in the world. Compared to rival Star Wars: The Old Republic, WoW’s fortunes still look good. EA’s game is set to go free-to-play some time in the near future.

Good news for Diablo, bad news for World of Warcraft

Blizzard can’t have the best of both worlds.

As gamers grabbed Blizzard’s latest Diablo III game, majority of these individuals were so ecstatic that they’ve decided to abandon the company’s previous money making baby, World of Warcraft.

In a report by Forbes, Xfire said that the World of Warcraft has seen a major drop of players since Diablo III was released. They also added that World of Warcraft now only has one-quarter of the player base they once had.

While World of Warcraft is having difficulties, League of Legends and Star Wars the Old Republic seems to combat the Diablo III menace quit well. Though the two games have seen a drop in play time and players, League of Legends has only seen a small dip in user numbers and hours played while Star Wars has seen a downward trend ever since its launch.

President of Xfire Mark Donovan said, “We were surprised by just how quickly Diablo III shot up and how many minutes people are playing it. 35,000 Xfire players are playing 10 million minutes per day. We haven’t had that since World of Warcraft launched. We’re seeing our users uploading 3,000 to 3,500 screenshots a day from Diablo III, primarily from the US.”

Two million units of “Star Wars” sold by EA

Star Wars is back in the limelight after game developer EA or Electronic Arts announced to their investors that the video game was off to a blistering start and downplayed reports that players were ditching it for new titles.

The game entitled “Star Wars: The Old Republic” has seen big investments coming from EA. In fact, the company has poured in more dough in this game that any other title in the latter’s 30-year existence. The gamble sounds good for EA as its shares increased by 6 percent at the close of the market. The company could reel in huge amounts of earnings if this trend continues.

            EA said that they have sold 2 million units of the game to date. And almost 1.7 million individuals have subscribed to it.

            When the game was released last December 20, those who bought the game had a difficult time connecting to the game’s servers. Eric Brown, Chief Financial Officer of EA, told Reuters that they have since improved since that inglorious day and have been able to reduce the wait times for players. He said that, “We were able to double the amount of people we could support per server and so the lines which appeared to be congested became uncongested due to great engineering. ‘Star Wars’ has been an incredibly successful launch.”

It seems OK as of now. Let’s just wait and see if EA can follow through with their improvements and if Star Wars can succeed against other online games out there.
