Instagram co-founder and former CEO Kevin Systrom said it is important for the future of the world that social media companies be policed well and seriously address the issues of misinformation and harassment on their services. “You start to realize … how important it’s going to be for the future of the world that we police these things well, that we take it very seriously and put real resources against solving the problems now that you’re at this scale,” said Systrom, speaking Tuesday evening at the WSJ Tech D.LIVE conference in Laguna Beach, California.
A raft of profit warnings from Apple Inc suppliers this week has fueled investor concerns that iPhone sales, in terms of volume, have hit a wall that could spell trouble for the company’s plans to make services its main pillar of growth. For the past year, investors had largely been willing to overlook stagnating unit sales of the iPhone because average selling prices kept rising. But it now faces fierce competition from mid-priced phones from makers such as Xiaomi Corp. Apple has often stated its plan to increase its revenue from paid services, such as Apple Music and iCloud. That, at least in part, requires a growing base of device owners driven by its iPhone, which analysts believe accounts for about two-thirds of the 1.3 billion Apple devices in use around the world. Wall Street analysts have expressed concerns that slower overall smartphone sales will make it harder for Apple to hold smartphone market share as people put off buying its generally more expensive phones. That, in turn, could hurt the growth of Apple’s services revenue, said Bernstein’s Toni Sacconaghi.
Well, Apple fans, it looks like your favorite gadget maker has one more surprise up its sleeve ahead of the holidays this year. Earlier this week, one of the most prolific leakers who covers mobile tech said that Apple “definitely” still plans to release next-generation AirPods this year. The leaker in question typically focuses his efforts on Samsung products, but he has been known to set his sights on Apple gear every now and then. His information is almost always accurate these days, so Apple fans had plenty to be excited about following his revelation. If you were among the people who got excited when you first learned that Apple will launch its long-awaited second-generation true wireless earbuds before the end of the year, then we have even more good news for you on Wednesday: A new leak appears to confirm the news, leaving precious little doubt that Apple’s new cord-free “AirPods 2” earbuds will hit store shelves in the coming weeks.
If you’re planning on picking up some cool new smart device for a loved one this holiday season, it might be worth your while to check whether it’s one of the good ones or not. Not just in the quality of the camera or step tracking, but the security and privacy practices of the companies that will collect (and sell) the data it produces. Mozilla has produced a handy resource ranking 70 of the latest items, from Amazon Echos to smart teddy bears.
If you aren’t one of the two million players to take a crack at the early stages version of Astroneer, here’s what to expect: The interplanetary survival sandbox game is a sort of mix of Minecraft and fellow space exploration game No Man’s Sky. In Astroneer, you play as a space explorer trying to survive and thrive in the treacherous terrain. As you travel through the solar system’s unique and uncharted planets, you’ll find resources that can be used to craft vehicles, build bases and conduct research. Astroneer will support crossplay between Xbox One and PC adventurers and will offer dedicated servers that will allow players to build and explore asynchronously.
Well, that didn’t take long. Just days after “Fortnite” players became able to dress their on-screen characters in NFL jerseys, a star player in real life was killed by someone wearing his jersey in the video game. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared the tragic tale Tuesday on Twitter. “Yesterday i played fortnite for the first time in a while and someone killed me with my jersey on.. don’t know how i feel about it…,” he tweeted.
In an attempt better connect with America’s youth, the U.S. Army is starting up an esports team. The effort comes during a period in which the Army is having difficulty meeting its recruitment targets. As first reported by Stars And Stripes, an independent news organization which operates from within the Department of Defense, the Army esports team is currently accepting applications from active duty personnel, reservists and veterans. An online form indicates that there is interest in fielding teams for Fortnite, Call of Duty, Tekken, League of Legends, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Overwatch, FIFA, the Madden series and the NBA 2K franchise.
Social media companies aren’t growing as quickly as they used to. In some cases, they aren’t growing at all. In the United States, things are even worse for them: They’re shrinking. Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are no longer adding new users in the United States. Facebook’s daily user base has been the same for the past three quarters. Twitter and Snapchat have both lost users in the U.S. or North America, respectively, in back-to-back quarters.
Nintendo’s marketing strategy for the Switch has involved positioning the device as a games console and little else. But if an apparent leak is accurate, the Switch is about to get a new video-streaming option. On Saturday, French website NintendHome tweeted what it claimed was a screengrab of a Switch YouTube app teaser from Nintendo of America’s website. According to the image, Switch will get a YouTube app on Thursday.
Niantic has a problem. It’s the king of GPS/AR/Maps–based “exergaming,” but it’s leasing its empire. Pokémon Go is built on IP it doesn’t own or control, and a portion of the profits are sent back to Japan. A chunk of the proceeds from its forthcoming Harry Potter game, already a likely blockbuster, will go to J.K. Rowling. It’s why Niantic is taking the time to remind the world that its own, original IP, Ingress, still exists. Launched in 2013, Ingress was Niantic’s first game, and one of the first to ask folks to wander around their locale and hunt for goodies. Six years and several million players later, the company has decided to relaunch the game, titled Ingress Prime. It’s hoping that a fresh start, a cleaned-up game and a deeper storyline will help coax back all of those people who tried Ingress once but never came back.
Now that Red Dead Redemption 2 is out in the wild, fans are asking when the Red Dead Online beta is likely to begin. Much like GTA 5 and its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 2 will have an online multiplayer feature called Red Dead Online. Access to the public beta is free for anyone who has purchased Red Dead Redemption 2, though not many details are available about it just yet.
It’s not unusual to see a Fortnite dance celebration after a goal in any sport, so it was only a matter of time before the battle royale game officially brought that connection in-game. Today, Epic Games announced a partnership with the National Football League that will bring a variety of jersey cosmetics that players can wear. According to Epic, these outfits can look like any of the 32 NFL teams on the roster, though players will be able to choose their own number. There will also be a made-up Fortnite team jersey. All jerseys will be available on November 9th in the in-game shop, though the price is unknown. Based on the video accompanying the announcement, it seems that this tie-in will also have some new emotes for purchase, too.
Fortnite’s giant purple cube named Kevin died on Sunday roughly 30 meters above Leaky Lake after an extended struggle with levitation. Memorial services were held immediately afterward in an endless white expanse where friends and family were invited to float weightlessly amongst themselves and in the company of abstract forms that coalesced into crystalline butterflies. Kevin was 72 days old.
American Football junkies would surely love to place their hands on the latest iteration of EA’s Madden game.
Madden NFL 13 became an instant hit when Electronic Arts announced that their latest edition of the popular Football franchise has sold about 900,000 copies during its first 24 hours of being available in the market for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The Madden NFL 13 game has seen vast improvements over its predecessor, the Madden NFL 12.
EA improved the left-analog stick passing controls and they were able to integrate new trajectories for passes and improved ball speeds.
Quarterbacks on the other hand have new moves to avoid blitzes and pass rush.
EA also included more than 430 new catch formations some of which are directed towards the improvement to the left-analog stick.
In addition, Madden NFL 13 also features 82 hours of commentary from Nantz and Simms with over 9,000 unique lines.
The game has received positive reviews from different sources. IGN reviewed the game and gave it a 9 out of 10 rating. They said the game’s overall play and Connected Careers were all great.
But IGN also said that the Kinect voice support of Madden NFL 13 is something that developers should work on.
The 900,000 game sales for the game is a 7% increase from last year’s Madden NFL 12.
NFL fans can now rejoice as their favorite players can now use Twitter and other social media platforms again – but with restrictions still.
Previously, the league had prohibited players, coaches and club personnel from using laptops, cellphones and other electronic devices beginning pregame warm-ups until the conclusion of the game.
This would not have worked though because the lots of players are also er—Twitter addicts.
The league then released its amended policy Monday saying that “coaches, players and football operations personnel are permitted under league policy and with club permission to use social media on game day during specific time periods before and after games… up to 90 minutes before kickoff and after the game following media interviews.”
A written statement from NFL was issued stating their reason for the amendment: “The growth of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has created important new ways for the NFL and clubs to communicate and connect with fans. The NFL has been at the forefront of the use of new media and will continue to emphasize innovative and appropriate use of these new forms of communication.”
Yaaaay social media networks and its addictive nature! LOL
