YouTube says ‘we’re back!’ after widespread outage

YouTube was down for a time on Tuesday night and people were not happy about it. Team YouTube sent out a tweet Tuesday evening and said, “We’re working on resolving this and will let you know once fixed. We apologize for any inconvenience.” The reports started coming in of YouTube’s outage around 9:15 p.m. ET. YouTube is the world’s second most-visited website. Later Tuesday evening, some reported it was back up for them. And, at around 11 p.m. ET, Team YouTube confirmed the news, saying “We’re back!”

First look: RED Hydrogen One hopes holographic screen can lure people from Apple, Samsung

We were getting a first look at the Hydrogen One from RED, an ambitious – and pricey – new “holographic” smartphone that launches Nov. 2 in both AT&T and Verizon stores. It costs $1,295 for an aluminum model and a whopping $1,595 for the titanium model that is coming later. Known for the professional cameras developed by founder Jim Jannard, RED has built a stellar reputation around high-end cinematography, the likes of which are in wide use in Hollywood. RED’s technology is at the core of the new phone.

Apple stores are now selling a $2,000 ‘self-flying’ drone you can control from an Apple Watch

Most people don’t think of Apple stores as a good place to buy a drone, but on Wednesday, it started to sell one of the most interesting quadcopters for consumers. At select locations, Apple will now sell a high-end drone called the Skydio R1, which costs $1,999, and is designed by a company founded by former MIT students and Google employees. The difference between the Skydio and similar drones is that the Skydio basically flies itself. DJI’s quadcopters and other competitive drones still are based around manual control and require the drone’s pilot to control where the drone flies.

Google’s cloud-based Chrome OS has morphed into an impressive computing platform now that it’s compatible with Android apps and, more recently, Linux apps. But what about Windows apps, you might wonder? What happened to all the rumors of Windows compatibility on the horizon? They’re still floating around, but you don’t have to wait for them to become true to start running Windows apps on your Chromebook. All you need is the Crossover app and a little time for experimentation.

Call of Duty’s Blackout is starting to chip away at PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

It seemed like Call of Duty’s battle royale would tear people away from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds when it launched last week. And that is potentially starting to happen. PUBG held strong through the weekend with no obvious effect on its peak concurrent players on Steam. But now that the week is here, fewer people are logging into play the last player-standing shooter, according to Steam’s stats. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launched October 12. On PC, it isn’t available on Steam. Instead, players must purchase it through Blizzard’s Battle.net service. And publisher Activision Blizzard does not share stats like peak concurrent players. So we can only look at data for PUBG. And those numbers reveal a sharper dip that corresponds with the release of Black Ops Blackout (BOBO).

Google not only recently announced two new Pixel phones, but the company also unveiled a new call screening service launching first with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL that will surely help you deal with calls from unknown numbers or people you’d rather avoid. Call Screen answers incoming calls, asks the person for more information and gives options throughout the screening process to better handle the call. Facebook is reportedly working on a TV camera that can stream video

Earlier this month, Facebook announced Portal, a camera-equipped smart device that’s meant to compete with Amazon’s Echo Show. But the company’s hardware ambitions apparently go far beyond that: Cheddar is reporting that Facebook is working on a TV camera that would offer Portal-like video chatting on a bigger screen and allow users to stream content from Facebook Watch.

It’s the Palm (2018), a device that should never have got past the point of conception, and certainly never have actually been made. It’s so baffling, even those that made it don’t know what it’s for. However, heads were nodded, budgets allotted, boxes were ticked, and production lines were fired into life. And now it has been vomited into the world.

Food lovers feel strongly about their bagels. Some fans of the boiled and baked bread product took offense at Apple’s new emoji rendition of a bagel. Apple seems to have heard their cries of anguish because it’s now released a redesigned, more appetizing version.

Discord’s game store is open to everyone

Discord is marching further onto Steam’s turf by opening up its game store to all users. The store arrived in August in a limited beta, and now everyone can pick up games directly from the app. The curated store includes recognizable titles such as Celeste, Into The Breach, Dead Cells and Subnautica along with a number of exclusives. Games featured in the First on Discord program will only be available on PC through the app for 90 days — developers get a showcase for their games, and Discord gets some limited-time exclusives.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dies of cancer at age 65

Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen has died from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Vulcan Inc. said Monday on behalf of his family. Allen passed away Monday afternoon in Seattle at 65 years old, Vulcan said. His sister, Jody, said he was “a remarkable individual on every level.” “While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much-loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend. Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern,” she said in a statement. “For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. At this time of loss and grief for us – and so many others – we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.”

Malicious messages reportedly crashing PlayStation 4 consoles

We’ve seen single malicious messages able to crash smartphones, but now there’s one for Sony’s PlayStation 4 console to look out for – users on social media and Reddit are reporting receiving a certain specially coded message that’s enough to put their hardware out of action. For now, you can set your PlayStation 4 and its mobile apps to only accept messages from friends you’ve already confirmed, or block messages completely: the options are under Account Management then Privacy Settings in the console settings. If you are hit with problems, one fix appears to be rebooting in Safe Mode and then rebuilding the database which shouldn’t affect your data.

Winamp, the legendarily customizable music player, is being revamped as a mobile app that will give you one place to listen to all your music — including playlists, podcasts, streaming radio stations, and more, as reported by TechCrunch.

Players are exploiting Black Ops 4 emotes to peek around corners

The first-person perspective in shooters usually brings an inherent kind of balance to the constant battle for cover—if you peek your head out to see an opponent, they’ll be able to see you as well. Over the weekend, though, Black Ops 4 players found the game’s new gesture system had the unintended side effect of breaking this balance, letting players easily and safely see around cover from a third-person perspective.

Pokémon Go’s Gen 4 will offer 107 new Pokémon, the second largest addition of new creatures to the game since its summer 2016 debut – topping the 80 or so added in Gen 2, and close to the numbers we seen in Gen 3. These Gen 4 Pokémon are from the franchise’s fourth generation of games – Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum – and feature many evolutions of creatures from previous generations, as well as some new baby Pokémon and, as always, brand new Legendary creatures.

Epic Games Is Suing A YouTuber For Cheating

Once again, Epic Games is taking a couple of cheaters to court, after the studio filed a lawsuit against YouTuber Brandon Lucas, also known as Golden Modz, and his partner Colton Conter that goes by the name Excentric. Lucas got into trouble with Epic Games after posting several videos on his YouTube channel with 1.7 million subscribers, where he is seen cheating in Fortnite and selling cheat tools via his website, which allegedly violates the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Conter, on the other hand, would sometimes participate in these videos, which is why Epic Games included him in the lawsuit.

“Tournaments” Mode Coming to Fortnite This Week

There will be a new “Events” section to the game, which you will find the available tournaments. “In-Game Tournaments are open to everyone and provide an opportunity for every player to compete directly alongside the pros for prizes and glory. Note that all players must opt-in for crossplay to participate in competitive events. During tournaments, players from all platforms will compete against one another as equals, regardless of if they are on a Mouse, Controller, or Touch input device. Every player will participate in the same competitions from start to finish, with equal opportunity to rise above the competition.”

Epic Games Is Going After Fortnite Console Cheaters

Epic Games has always done a great job when it comes to keeping cheaters away from Fortnite Battle Royale. The game developer has no mercy when it comes to cheating and ruining fun for other players. While Epic mostly bans players from the game, there are some cases where the company filed a lawsuit against cheaters. The Fortnite developer is not changing its stance on cheating. This is why some console players have been banned from Fortnite matches recently. They have been banned because they found a way to gain an unfair advantage over their opponents, which is something the game creator does not like.

This Man Was Just Looking for Directions When He Found His Wife With Another Man on Google Street View

According to Techspot, a man in Peru discovered that his wife was with another man when he was simply trying to find directions to a bridge in Lima using Google Maps. As he searched through the street view, he happened upon a screenshot of a woman who looked remarkably like his wife sitting on a bench on a lovely, flower-lined street, with a man resting his head on her lap.

World’s fastest camera freezes time at 10 trillion frames per second

What happens when a new technology is so precise that it operates on a scale beyond our characterization capabilities? For example, the lasers used at INRS produce ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond range (10-15 s), which is far too short to visualize. Although some measurements are possible, nothing beats a clear image, says INRS professor and ultrafast imaging specialist Jinyang Liang. He and his colleagues, led by Caltech’s Lihong Wang, have developed what they call T-CUP: the world’s fastest camera, capable of capturing 10 trillion (1013) frames per second (Fig. 1). This new camera literally makes it possible to freeze time to see phenomena—and even light—in extremely slow motion.

Facebook rolls out 3D Photos feature using iPhone depth map data

Facebook has started to roll out a new imaging feature to users of the social network, with “3D Photos” able to provide the effect of 3D in a two-dimensional photograph, by taking advantage of depth maps generated by newer iPhone models. Initially announced at Facebook’s F8 conference in May, 3D Photos are slowly being made available to all users. The imaging function gives the appearance of depth to a normally static and flat photograph, with the background scrolling behind the user as they scroll, pan, or tilt the image.

Apple patent could kill robocalls

If you think you’re fed up with getting robocalls, Apple is taking it to another level. A new software patent from the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech giant could help kill robocalls and scams, letting users automatically recognize “a spoofing caller.” The patent, filed in April 2017, was made public on Thursday and describes a system that would let the phone do checks on a call to see whether the call is legitimate or if it is from a “spoofed number.”

Hitman 2 introducing 1v1 multiplayer Ghost Mode

The prospect of Hitman 2 has seemed to be ‘more of the same good stuff, in new places’ but with the game’s launch now only one month and a day away, developers IO Interactive today announced that–surprise!–it’ll introduce a 1v1 competitive multiplayer mode. Ghost Mode, as it’s named, isn’t about two hitmen trying to whack each other. Instead, they’ll compete to off the same random targets fastest in different instances of the same level, existing in each other’s world only as a faded ‘ghost’.

Fortnite’s Next New Vehicle Is Quadcrasher, It Destroys Things

Epic Games has revealed that there’s a new vehicle on its way to Fortnite on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. If you boot up the game you’ll be greeted with a splash screen with the latest news and, alongside details on the new Disco Domination Limited-Time Mode and the Fortnite Android open-beta, there’s an image and description of the Quadcrasher.
