Apple’s New iPhones Have An Expensive Nasty Surprise

Mounting evidence suggests Apple’s iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR are not selling well even despite price cuts. We already know the crowd-pleasing innovation Apple has planned to win users back, but it might not be enough after a major source confirmed the most serious problem with the company’s new iPhones… Bloomberg reports Apple has fallen substantially behind its rivals and will not be able to equip iPhones with 5G until late 2020 at the earliest. And 5G is about to become a game-changer.

Russian search giant Yandex is making phones now

After self-driving cars and smart speakers, Russian search engine giant Yandex is getting into smartphones. Its debut handset, fittingly titled “Yandex.Phone,” is an entry-level Android device that’s hooked up to its massive ecosystem. That essentially means it comes pre-loaded with Yandex’s software — including its GPS, music, and weather apps. At the center of it all sits Alice: the company’s virtual assistant, which now boasts 34,000 localized skills and can understand Russian with a “near human-level accuracy.” Alice can also help you find local businesses and service providers from Yandex’s integrated business directory. The same database can identify unknown business callers or let you contact a business by searching for a name or service.

Facebook’s top AI scientist says it’s ‘dust’ without artificial intelligence

Without artificial intelligence there wouldn’t be much left of Facebook as we know it today. That’s according to Yann LeCun, who founded Facebook’s artificial intelligence research lab five years ago. “If you take the deep learning out of Facebook today, Facebook’s dust,” LeCun, Facebook’s chief AI scientist, recently told CNN Business. “It’s entirely built around it now.” The technology is included in everything from the posts and translations you see in your news feed to advertisements. When LeCun established the lab, Facebook was already dabbling in deep learning — a type of machine learning he’s worked on and championed since the 1980s. Deep-learning software, modeled after the way neurons work in the brain, ingests loads of data and learns to make its own predictions.

Plant cyborg able to move itself to a preferred light source

A team of researchers at the MIT Media Lab built a cyborg that combines a plant with electronics and ultimately allows the plant to choose when it would like to move to a brighter spot. The cyborg is the brainchild of team leader Harpreet Sareen, and he has named it Elowan. Plants have the ability to detect light—if you watch really carefully, for example, you can actually see a sunflower move to face directly into the sun as it moves across the sky. Prior research has shown that plants have many natural sensors and response systems—they respond to humidity and temperature levels, for example, or the amount of water in the soil in which they are planted. In this new effort, the researchers sought to give one plant more autonomy by putting its potted base on wheels fitted with electronics and an electric motor.

Rapper 2 Milly is suing the maker of Fortnite, Epic Games, for selling his signature “Milly Rock” dance as an emote called “Swipe It.” Pierce Bainbridge, the law firm representing 2 Milly, filed the complaint in the Central District Court of California today, accusing Epic of, among other things, copyright infringement, and exploiting African American talent for profit in the game.

5G smartphones are coming in 2019. What does that mean?

5G is already here, but you can’t do much to access those super-fast speeds unless you live in a specific place with a particular piece of technology. That’s about to change. Samsung and Verizon jointly announced Monday the companies would sell a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019. Although they didn’t say which phone would support 5G, Samsung usually announces its latest Galaxy S smartphone in the spring.

Fortnite’s Season 7 gets start date and chilling first tease

Between the shambling monsters, meandering cubes, and inter-dimensional butterflies from beyond time and space, Fortnite’s sixth season has certainly been memorable. All good things must come to an end however, and Epic has now confirmed that Season 6 only has only three days left to go. On a happier note, it’s also shared the very first tease for Season 7. For weeks now, Epic’s subtle and not-so-subtle in-game shenanigans have lead many to believe that Fortnite’s Season 7 will have an appropriately wintery sub-zero theme. There’ve been hints of frost and snow in a number of new cosmetics, and then there’s the not-inconsiderable matter of the great snowstorm bearing down on Battle Royale island right now.

Indie Developers Don’t Like Steam’s New Revenue Sharing Policy

Steam is constantly evolving behind the scenes, but the latest reorganization of the storefront’s molecules has left some developers scratching their heads. Now, if a game makes $10 million, developers have to share less money with Valve. And if it hits $50 million, even less than that. Valve announced tweaks to Steam’s revenue sharing system in a post on Friday. Previously, all developers had to give 30 percent of their revenue to Valve. Now, if a game makes $10 million, its developer only has to toss 25 percent of earnings after that into Valve’s bottomless money abyss. If it makes it all the way up to $50 million, the developer only owes Valve a 20 percent cut of remaining sales. “The value of a large network like Steam has many benefits that are contributed to and shared by all the participants,” Valve wrote. “Finding the right balance to reflect those contributions is a tricky but important factor in a well-functioning network. It’s always been apparent that successful games and their large audiences have a material impact on those network effects, so making sure Steam recognizes and continues to be an attractive platform for those games is an important goal for all participants in the network.”

5 Ways Technology is Helping Our Children Read Better

The US has been facing a literacy problem for some time, especially compared to other countries. This is one reason why many parents want to do their best for their children and prepare them for an economy that keeps expanding beyond borders. The following are five technologies that could help your children read better.

Reading Assistant

One important way that students can learn to read a little better and pronounce words effectively is by reading out loud. You probably remember reading passages in your classroom and dreading being called out by your teacher. This practice helps children to be more confident in how they speak, and it gives them an opportunity to read better. This practice has been improved on through technology, which is something that your kids can benefit from.

There is a virtual reading assistant that will listen to your child read out loud, helping them as they go along. This program uses speech recognition technology that listens to your child read and will help them enhance language fluency, comprehension, and prosody, among other things. The tool is very helpful and can be used outside the classroom to help kids who are a little shy about practicing their reading in front of others.

Comprehension Tools

Another tool that parents can introduce to their children is a comprehension tool. There are a number of these tools online that can be used to help your children understand what they are reading a little better. It’s no secret that some words can get complicated, making passages much harder to understand.

These tools know that and found a way to tap into this confusing aspect of language in order to simplify it. All students have to do is copy and paste passages that they find hard to understand into one of these programs. The program analyzes it, then simplifies parts of the passage that the algorithm thought would be hard to comprehend by replacing those words or phrases with simpler language.

Level Detection

The reading level of each student is different, and it is important that this is taken into account when a student is presented with reading material. The problem is that this can get a little hard, especially in a classroom filled with students who might be reading at different levels.

Thankfully, there is a tool to address this very issue: a reading level detection tool. The tool detects each child’s reading level and assigns varying but appropriate reading material to that child. The material is meant to enhance comprehension without confusing the reader. This is definitely a tool worth having at home and in the classroom.

Immersion Reading

Understanding and remembering what you read can sometimes be hard. One thing that some educators have noticed is that immersion reading can sometimes make a world of difference, but this can be a little hard to accomplish at school. To help with this, there are some immersion reading tools out there that your children can benefit from.

The point of these tools is to read material out loud using professional actors along with special effects, which helps ignite the imagination. This can assist some students when it comes to not only paying attention to language but also being excited by it. These positive feelings can help continue to develop your children’s love for literature.

Interactive Reading

Some children need interactivity in order to remain engaged with the material. Interactive reading tools are meant to help kids with reading through material and also helping them find out if they truly understood the material by using comprehension questions afterward. Interactive reading tools aim to make reading more fun, which can motivate some students.

Why It Matters

If you have a soon-to-be kindergarten, these technologies can help your child develop basic computer skills, introduce themselves to reading in a fun manner, and increase love for learning. This is especially a good introduction for kindergarteners who will be doing an online school or home school experience, as they will be getting used to learning independently.

Remember that this is an example of one way to make reading more interactive; another example is to introduce your kids to a message board where other kids can discuss the events in the story with each other. Reading is one of the most important skills we have in life, one that is rapidly decreasing the United States, which means it going to be critical to make sure young people have access to tools to help it happen.

Microsoft announces it will support secure USB keys that let you log into everything without a password

Microsoft announced Tuesday it will now support USB security keys, which give Microsoft account holders the ability to log into their computers and accounts without a username or password at all. The passwords will support users across the range of Microsoft services, including Outlook, Office, OneDrive, Bing, Skype and Xbox Live, according to the company. Microsoft will support keys from well-known names Yubikey and the FEITIAN Biopass key, which retail for between $20 and $60. The keys are USB key fobs that users can insert into their USB-enabled devices.

‘Pokémon Go’ creator Niantic to develop GPS-based tourism games

It was at the helm of GPS/AR/Maps-based “exergaming” in 2013 with Ingress, saw phenomenal success with Pokémon Go, and will launch a location-based Harry Potter mobile game next year. Now, Niantic is making the natural move into tourism-focused games. In partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), as part of its Travel.Enjoy.Respect program, the games company will create new experiences that encourage players to explore and discover the hidden histories of both their own neighborhoods and further afield.

$1 million ‘Fortnite’ winter tournament is open to all

Now that Epic has had some time to refine Fortnite’s online tournament system, it’s committing to higher stakes for its competitions. The studio is launching an open Winter Royale tournament with a total of $1 million in prizes. Anyone in the North America and Europe regions can qualify by excelling in event sessions during the qualifying days on November 24th and November 25th. If you make the cut, you’ll play in your respective region’s finals (starting November 30th for Europe, December 11th for North America).

For the past year, investors had largely been willing to overlook stagnating unit sales of the iPhone because average selling prices kept rising. But it now faces fierce competition from mid-priced phones from makers such as Xiaomi Corp. Apple has often stated its plan to increase its revenue from paid services, such as Apple Music and iCloud. That, at least in part, requires a growing base of device owners driven by its iPhone, which analysts believe accounts for about two-thirds of the 1.3 billion Apple devices in use around the world. Wall Street analysts have expressed concerns that slower overall smartphone sales will make it harder for Apple to hold smartphone market share as people put off buying its generally more expensive phones. That, in turn, could hurt the growth of Apple’s services revenue, said Bernstein’s Toni Sacconaghi.

In Astroneer, you play as a space explorer trying to survive and thrive in the treacherous terrain. As you travel through the solar system’s unique and uncharted planets, you’ll find resources that can be used to craft vehicles, build bases and conduct research. Astroneer will support crossplay between Xbox One and PC adventurers and will offer dedicated servers that will allow players to build and explore asynchronously.

Just days after “Fortnite” players became able to dress their on-screen characters in NFL jerseys, a star player in real life was killed by someone wearing his jersey in the video game. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared the tragic tale Tuesday on Twitter. “Yesterday i played fortnite for the first time in a while and someone killed me with my jersey on.. don’t know how i feel about it…,” he tweeted.

The US Army wants to attract more soldiers by fielding a Fortnite team

In an attempt better connect with America’s youth, the U.S. Army is starting up an esports team. The effort comes during a period in which the Army is having difficulty meeting its recruitment targets. As first reported by Stars And Stripes, an independent news organization which operates from within the Department of Defense, the Army esports team is currently accepting applications from active duty personnel, reservists and veterans. An online form indicates that there is interest in fielding teams for Fortnite, Call of Duty, Tekken, League of Legends, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Overwatch, FIFA, the Madden series and the NBA 2K franchise.

A number of studies have by now correlated social media use with mental-health risks, such as loneliness and depression. But correlation isn’t causation, leaving a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem: Is social media actually behind these issues, or are people who are already depressed and lonely just more likely to spend time on social media? A new study being published in December’s Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has tried to look into the causal side of things, and see whether people may actually feel better when they cut down on social media. Its conclusion: “Our findings strongly suggest that limiting social media use to approximately 30 minutes per day may lead to significant improvement in well-being,” the authors write.

Xbox One Receiving Mouse and Keyboard Support Next Week

During its big X018 event over the weekend, Microsoft confirmed that support for mouse and keyboard support will be arriving for Xbox One next week, with a bunch of titles to receive the feature right off the bat. Among these will be Fortnite and Warframe, as well as Bomber Crew and Deep Rock Galactic. Strange Brigade, Vermintide 2, War Thunder, and X-Morph: Defense will also have mouse and keyboard support patched in later this month, while Children of Morta, DayZ, Minion Master, Moonlighter, Vigor, Warfare, and Wargroove will also receive support “in the future”.

A Facebook post by Domino’s Pizza Malaysia contains an image that, at the top, reads, “This is not an out-of-season April Fool’s joke.” This is a reference to the moment during the Q&A session for the Diablo Immortal reveal when one member of the audience asked, “Is this an out-of-season April Fool’s joke?”

Steam bug allowed unlimited free downloads

A man has been given $20,000 (£15,500) for discovering a bug in the Steam video games store that let people download any game for free. Security researcher Artem Moskowsky found a flaw in Steam’s portal for games developers that let anybody generate licence keys without paying. Millions of people use Steam to buy and download games on PC and Mac computers. Mr Moskowsky told Steam owner Valve about the bug and it awarded him the money as part of its bug bounty scheme.

Five Nights at Freddy’s movie delayed, new ‘AAA’ game in the works

Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series shows no signs of slowing down, with a feature film, a new sequel, updated console ports and a new “big-budget game” in development. Cawthon outlined the future for Five Nights at Freddy’s on Steam earlier today, starting with the bad news: The movie based on the horror games has been delayed (even though it didn’t have an announced release date). Earlier this year, Blumhouse Productions announced that it was developing a live-action Five Nights at Freddy’s movie with director Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) at the helm. But Cawthon said that this movie will take a little longer to complete, as he’s thrown out his original script.

How to connect and transfer Pokemon from Pokemon GO to Pokemon Let’s GO

Hello trainers! Today the Japanese site for Let’s GO has been updated with details on how to connect Let’s GO and Pokémon GO, along with information on what can and can’t be transferred along with the restrictions caused by transferring. As we know, in Pokémon Let’s GO: Pikachu! and Let’s GO: Eevee! once you get to Fuchsia City, you will unlock GO Park, which allows you to transfer Pokémon to the games from Pokémon GO. There are 20 Parks, and each can hold 50 Pokémon. That makes it to where you can have 1000 Pokémon in GO Park at any given time! The GO Park complex in the games will be where the Safari Zone was in Pokémon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow, which is in the northern area of the city, it’s gonna be hard to miss.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates unveiled a futuristic toilet Tuesday that doesn’t need water or sewers and uses chemicals to turn human waste into fertilizer. It is the brainchild of research projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s biggest private philanthropy organization. There are multiple designs of the toilet but all work by separating liquid and solid waste. “The current toilet simply sends the waste away in the water, whereas these toilets don’t have the sewer,” Gates said. “They take both the liquids and solids and do chemical work on it, including burning it in most cases.”

A 70-year-old man in Taiwan has gone viral for playing Pokémon Go with 11 phones attached to his bicycle. Chen San-yuan has made headlines internationally for the strange setup. Chen also keeps external batteries and charging cables on him so he can enjoy up to 20 hours of battery life per phone. Since first getting caught on social media and going viral in August, Chen has upgraded to a waist mount, so he can travel with his 11 phones on foot. His neighbor also commented on how Chen’s unique approach to catching pokémon has turned their street into a tourist attraction.

It looks like there’s a problem with the hitbox for new Overwatch hero Ashe

As u/DarkyPaky discovered, the latest addition to Overwatch might need a hit box adjustment, as hers is currently very noticeably oversized. It appears that not only does the hitbox for Ashe’s head include her wide-brimmed hat, but it also seems to extend above her visible model entirely. Ashe has one of the smaller character models in the game, but as it stands she might well be one of the easiest to land a headshot on right now – a problem for a hero with only 200 points of health.

Fortnite hits concurrent player count of 8.3 million

Fortnite launched in South Korea this week, complete with a new set of challenges. This week saw the introduction of Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode in South Korea, where players were encouraged to play at PC Bang cafes to complete PC Bang challenges. Epic Games Korea gave an interview where its spokesperson, Sung Chul Park, stated that Fortnite now has 8.3 million concurrent players worldwide. Yep. You heard us: 8.3 million people playing Fortnite simultaneously.
