Twitter announced today that they will discontinue their desktop app on Mac
Twitter announced on Friday that they will kill their app on Mac desktop and just direct its users to Twitter.com. Instead of the continuing development on Mac desktop, they came to a decision that doesn’t sound good for TweetDeck lovers. The company said that they will just focus more and develop “a great Twitter experience that’s consistent across platforms”. Now, the Twitter for Mac app no longer exist on the Mac App Store.
Starting today, it will no longer be available for download. Then after 30 days, Twitter plans to stop supporting it all together. Sadly, for many years, Twitter for Mac never had that much of attention from Mac users. Not to mention the one and a half star rating on the Mac App Store. It’s actually quite sad for Twitter to see that rating, right?
In 2015, the company announced plans to refocus its efforts on building new features into its Mac app. They only just provided lesser updates of the app for the last several years. Although they had updates for the app, it’s really not that popular for Twitter users. And only gained less stars in the App store.
In recent months, Twitter has also been streaming its apps. The discontinuation of the official Mac app follows a Twitter’s decision to completely remove it from the Apple Watch app. They removed it September last year.
Twitter for Mac users who are looking for a desktop app experience may also enjoy the well-loved app. If you’re not up to the web interface you may use some third-party app. Some of it are the Tweetbot or Twitterrific. It’s very clear that Twitter wants to put more of its engineering and product resources toward web and mobile.
