The Mobile World Congress kicked off Friday with a bang. Being one of the biggest tech trade shows in the world, the MWC surely has its fair share of surprises. So far, the MWC has delivered in its first day.

Two popular things for the day are quad core phones and devices with Android 4.0 or more popularly known as the Ice Cream Sandwich. Of the three major phone developers, only one had no quad core phone to unveil.

Huawei surprised all of us with their Ascend D smartphones. Their latest phone the Ascend D Quad surely is very great. But can they up the ante of the company that is behind the market leaders? That is question that needs to be addressed.

LG is also doing the quad core dance with their LG Optimus 4X HD. This latest phone uses a veritable Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and has a 4.7 inch HD display. The company has also confirmed about the development of another device that is being pitted directly against the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Samsung showcased its latest development in the Galaxy Beam, a smartphone that has an internal projector. Sound great but can they keep up with other features of other aggressive companies?

Sony is relaunching their mobile brand. Unfortunately, they are still dual core and runs on the old Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Xperia P and Xperia U are Sony’s ticket to the market. Can they survive the divorce they had with Ericsson? We will soon find out in the months to come.
