Sony Is Finally Allowing PSN ID Changes, But There’s A Catch

Sony is finally giving in to the PlayStation community on a long-held request by throngs of gamers who made a big mistake when they first chose their PlayStation Network IDs: Soon, gamers will be able to change their PSN IDs for the very first time. Once it’s rolled out to all PS4 users next year, gamers will be able to change their PSN ID as many times as they’d like. Here’s where the catch comes into play, however. The first time is free but after that you’ll need to pony up $9.99 for each subsequent change or $4.99 for PS+ subscribers.

PC market flat, as Surface becomes a top-5 computer brand in the US

Microsoft was the fifth-biggest PC maker in the US in the third quarter of this year, according to industry advisory firm Gartner. The top spot in the US belongs to HP, with about 4.5 million machines sold, ahead of Dell at 3.8 million, Lenovo at 2.3 million, and Apple at 2 million. The gap between fourth and fifth is pretty big—Microsoft sold only 0.6 million Surface devices last quarter—but it suggests that Microsoft’s PC division is heading in the right direction, with sales 1.9 percent higher than the same quarter last year. The company pushed down to sixth place was Acer.

Surface tablet to be priced like Apple’s iPad

Tech developers who are wary of a $200 Surface tablet gave a sigh of relief after Steve Ballmer hinted that their Surface tab would most likely be priced at the price range of Apple’s iPad.

In an interview with the Seattle Times, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that their Surface tablet will be priced comparable to that of the iPad rather than the Kindle Fire.

In the interview, Ballmer said, “I think most people would tell you that the iPad is not a superexpensive device… (When) people offer cheaper, they do less. They look less good, they’re chintzier, they’re cheaper.”

“If you say to somebody, would you use one of the 7-inch tablets, would somebody ever use a Kindle to do their homework? The answer is no; you never would. It’s just not a good enough product. It doesn’t mean you might not read a book on it,” he added.

The rumored iPad release next month can possibly affect the price of the Surface tablet.

Currently, the iPad is priced between $400 to $800 depending on the generation and storage size.

Ballmer is very optimistic as to what the Surface tablet can do. According to him, “I’m not paid to have doubts. I don’t have any. It’s a fantastic product.”

Surface tablet pricing still unknown: PC vendors on a lookout

Microsoft isn’t planning to back out in their plans to release their Surface tablet products. This was revealed by Acer chairman JT Wang last Thursday.

But Microsoft in their part is planning to create a price gap between their Surface tablet and devices that their vendors make, in order for the companies supplying the latter to still have business with them.

According to Digitimes, “Microsoft is currently looking for solutions such as creating a price gap to minimize the negative impact on other vendor’s product lineup.”

The pricing for the Surface tablet hasn’t been made public yet. But a low tiered $199 Surface tablet could spell doom for other companies that carry the Windows OS.

Wang said that a Surface tablet that would fetch consumers $499 to $599 could create some leeway for other companies and could have a smaller impact to them.

Microsoft has publicly stated that, “Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC.”

A lot of individuals are looking forward to the Microsoft Surface tablet. But a lot of companies have been very weary as to the impact this tablet would have to the industry.

Google set to release Nexus 7 this July

Google Inc. is set to sell their first ever tablet this July hoping to barge into the tablet market, which is currently being dominated by Apple’s iPad.

Google’s entry to the market could help boost the development of tablet specific apps for their own Android software. Microsoft is set to follow in Google’s steps with their impending “Surface” tablet launch.

The Nexus 7, which is a collaboration between Asus and Google, was unveiled during the company’s annual developers conference.

The unveiling of the Nexus 7 tablet comes barely a month after Google acquired Motorola Mobility.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was present during the event and demoed the Google Glass. The latter can livestream events and perform computing tasks. Google Glass is set to be priced at $1,500.

But what was on the spotlight during the conference was the Nexus tablet. It will be sold initially at Google Play online store, priced at $199. It is a 7 inch tablet that has a front facing camera.

Google director of engineering for Android Chris Yerga said, “Nexus 7 is an ideal device for reading books. The form factor and weight are just right.”

Google is offering the Nexus 7 to buyers, with a $25 credit that they can use to purchase app at the Google Play store.

Microsoft set to pit Surface against the iPad

Last week, TechNewsGadget gave you hints that Microsoft was going head on with Apple’s iPad with their own version of their tablet.

Today, Microsoft has finally put those rumors to rest as the company officially unveiled their much anticipated device in Los Angeles. This Microsoft tablet is going to compete with the iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy line tablets.

Called Surface, it features a 10.6 inch screen and weighs less than 1.5 pounds. What sets Surface apart from other tablets is that it has a full multi touch keyboard that is part of its foldout cover.

According to president of the Windows division of Microsoft, Steven Sinofsky, the Surface is a “tablet that’s a great PC – a PC that’s a great tablet.”

Microsoft is set to launch their much anticipated Windows 8 this year. The latter is an OS that was designed for touch screen devices but it can be used in multiple platforms including smartphones and desktop computers and laptops.

Tablet sales have been on a high lately. It is expected to triple in 2013 and analysts suggest that figures could reach to 200 million in that year.

Apple’s iPad is considered as the world’s best-selling tablet. Microsoft hopes that the Surface could alter the market and become the iPad of the future.
