What Does the Future of Energy Look Like?

0

The future of energy is bright. The world is moving away from using fossil fuels and toward a brighter future that relies increasingly on renewable energy for its power needs. Here’s a look at what you can expect in the future from the energy sector.

No More Fossil Fuels

The world is becoming fully aware of the dangers and challenges that these rapidly depleting fossil-fuel sources present to the rest of us. They are expensive, damaging to the environment, and dangerous to obtain. As such, energy use is shifting away from fossil fuels and more toward forms of renewable energy.

Solar Power

Solar power has become the most popular form of renewable energy, with solar panels seemingly sprouting up everywhere. It has relatively low costs to operate and install, thus making it ideal for residential or small-scale installation. As a result, more and more homeowners and business owners are replacing their traditional power sources with solar energy.

Wind Power

Wind power is becoming more popular for large-scale power generation. Because of the size of windmills, this form of power generation is advancing to the point where its use can replace fossil fuels. It requires large tracts of land to operate, but that makes it no different than any other form of energy generation. Best of all, its use comes without any of the power disruption associated with oil, gas, or coal.

Nuclear Power

Nuclear energy is not without its challenges, but it is gaining in popularity because it does have environmental benefits, namely, a total lack of climate-destroying emissions that come with other forms of energy generation. Furthermore, the United States already has dozens of nuclear power plants that are able to meet its electricity-generating needs. However, the world’s uranium reserves may eventually run out. As such, nuclear power is not sustainable indefinitely.

Less Expensive

As technology advances and competition in the renewable energy sector becomes more fierce, prices are dropping. This is happening in terms of both the cost of installation and the cost of the energy itself. Indeed, in many parts of the world, renewable energy is now cheaper than fossil fuels, and this trend is only expected to accelerate over the next few years. The future of energy is healthy and diverse, thanks to advancing technology, declining costs, and an increasing reliance on environmentally healthy forms of renewable energy. This is a change that will be positively felt by everyone over the next few decades.

Is Automation Taking Jobs Away From Humans?

0
iot smart factory , industry 4.0 technology concept, Engineer use controller robot in automation factory background with fake sunlight on operation line, Futuristic in the new trend technology

Automation is one of those words that seems to hush an employee break room full of people quicker than anything else. The concept of automation has developed a negative connotation among employees, especially in a few specific industries, including manufacturing. In the past, automation meant the elimination of low-level jobs. Today, companies are making an effort to automate low-level tasks and simultaneously train employees to takeover more profitable and higher-skilled tasks. So, is automation really taking jobs away from humans?

Automation Is Creating New Jobs

It may not look this way on the surface because if you are an employee whose job is being taken over by a machine, all you see is the job that you lost. The new machines, though, require operators. These are several tests being conducted at food establishments, for example. At a hamburger restaurant, there is a machine that is supposed to make several burgers an hour, but the machine requires operators. The food still has to be prepped, and cleanup is still necessary. In many ways, automation is simply shifting responsibilities while making humans smarter and better skilled.

Some Industries Will Lose Jobs

Some industries will suffer job losses. In the farming sector, farmers are at the mercy of volatile raw material prices as well as the potential for injuries to their workers. There have also been issues that have affected the cost of labor, so industrious individuals have been working on machines that automate repetitive tasks. Believe it or not, they also have human safety in mind, too. This means that those who are in danger of losing their jobs to machines should start learning how to operate them or gain higher-level skills.

So, Is Automation Good or Bad?

When it comes to automation, your glass can be half full or half empty. If your glass is half empty, you have to examine your circumstances. If you are someone who can retire, then maybe that is the best route to take if your job is being replaced with automation. If you are far from retirement, you might consider picking up new skills. Machinery automation has had positive effects in the industrial manufacturing industry.

It is an interesting time to be alive. In the past, the Industrial Revolution caused some panic among low-skilled workers, but people adapted to their new circumstances. Technology and software are absolutely bringing about a new revolution, but only time will tell how things will actually work out.

New Safety Tech You May Not Have Heard About

0

When it comes to new advances in technology, new devices like smartphones, cameras, and automotive features always take the front stage. These technologies make our lives easier, streamline our work, and help us stay in contact with our friends and family. However, there is a range of new technological advances under the radar that are designed to keep us safe. From electronic tattoos to body armor, here are three new innovations in safety technology that you may not have heard about.

Liquid Body Armor

Kevlar is considered the industry standard for bulletproof vests and is used by military personnel and law enforcement agents nationwide. A new technology under development by the US Army Research Laboratory is seeking to improve Kevlar by integrating a liquid body armor called shear thickening fluid into the material. Like any other fluid, liquid body armor is free-flowing and malleable most of the time. However, when a sudden impact like a bullet hits the material, it becomes rigid, deflecting the impact and protecting the wearer. This material is also light and, when it is in its malleable form, allows the user to have a full range of motion, unrestricted by a heavy or bulky protective vest.

Temporary Electronic Tattoos

Wearable devices like smartwatches are steadily increasing in popularity, especially those that can monitor health statistics like heart rate. Researchers are working on nano-film tattoos that can expand the benefits of these wearable computers. One use case for these tattoos is for monitoring blood alcohol levels. Within the tattoo, the small electronic board analyzes and transfers information about your alcohol levels easily, and without drawing blood. This can help alert users if their blood alcohol level reaches a dangerous level and can even communicate with their smart car to prevent them from driving. Because they are so thin, these tattoos are more resilient than other monitoring technology and are more comfortable, increasing compliance with medical monitoring. For example, another use case for these tattoos is blood glucose monitoring, important for diabetic patients.

Workplace Sensors

Ensuring workplace safety is important for companies to ensure their employees are not only doing the best work they can but are avoiding injury in the process. Wearable technology that leverages the use of the Internet of Things is rapidly expanding in this field. The Internet of Things involves incorporating input sensors and internet access into everyday objects to increase their efficiency or ease of use. One such example is incorporating carbon monoxide sensors into hard hats to ensure that construction site workers are not exposed to dangerous levels of this toxic gas. Another is ergonomically designed chairs and keyboards that are enhanced with technology to monitor their users, helping them maintain proper posture to avoid a repetitive strain injury.

Just a decade ago, many of these safety technologies would have been impossible to develop. As technology advances, so will our ability to use it to better ensure our own safety — and improve the lives of millions across the globe.
