Google and Nest reunited in making AI to every gadgets
Google and Nest reunited in producing smart gadgets with Artificial Intelligent (AI). Nest has shipped 11 million gadgets worldwide. And now, they aim to have Google Assistant to their gadgets in competition with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa. Google, the world’s largest search engine, has staked its future on building Google smarts into devices beyond smartphones.
On Wednesday, the company announced that Nest was part of its plans. They would no longer operate as a separate division. Nest has been living in the outer orbit of parent company Alphabet’s “Other Bets” group of projects.
Now, Google welcomed Nest again in their family. Where Google is the part of Alphabet that houses search, Youtube, Android mobile software and other moneymakers. Actually, Nest has been acquired by Google last 2014 but operating outside of it for the past three years.
Because of this, changes in the organizational structure will now take effect. Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz will be reporting to Google’s hardware chief, Rick Osterloh. Osterloh was a former Motorola executive who took charge of all Google’s consumer devices in 2016. That includes Google Home smart speakers, Pixel smartphones and Chromecast streaming devices.
Osterloh said in an interview last Tuesday, “All of Google’s investment in machine learning and AI, they can very clearly benefit Nest products. It just makes sense to be developing them together.”The meeting took place in a room designed with a kitchen and a washer-dryer setup. “It’s the natural thing to evolve to”, he also added.
Nest brand became famous due to its 2011 internet-connected thermostat.
But Osterloh and Fawaz said that it isn’t going anywhere. Actually, the two drilled home the message that the reunion of the teams will “supercharge Nest’s mission”, as Fawaz said.
Google and Nest have already plotted out and finalize their hardware roadmaps for 2018. But in the next two years, they’ll start co-developing products. Now, consumers are pretty much excited about this news. And giants in this industry like Apple and Amazon, are looking forward to a new competitor.
