Social media giant Facebook has reportedly bought Confirm.io. The company that Facebook acquired offers an API that would allow other companies to verify identification cards issued by the government.

With Facebook’s acquisition, the Boston-based startup would cease its operation since its technological assets and workforce would be rolled into Facebook. Confirm.io’s technology could actually help Facebook users who have locked out their social media accounts.

Confirm.io:  Here’s what you need to know

In case you don’t know, Confirm.io has launched three years ago after it raised $4 million from various investors including Cava Capital. Reports claim that back in 2015, the company funded advanced forensics.

This advanced technology was used to extract information from a certain identification card, facial recognition, as well as mobile biometrics to confirm an identity of a person. Confirm.io’s technology can be integrated into various platforms.

Confirm.io’s tech can be used in various services and platforms like Doordash, a food delivery service. Doordash uses the company’s technology to verify the drivers’ authenticity while Notarize used the app to verify the identity of customers looking to file their documents.

“When we launched Confirm, our mission was to become the market’s trusted identity origination platform for which other multifactor verification services can build upon. Now, we’re ready to take the next step on our journey with Facebook. However, in the meantime this means all of our current digital ID authentication software offerings will be wound down,” the company said.

But for Facebook, it said that they welcome Confirm because it would help improve their platform. “We are excited to welcome the Confirm team to Facebook. Their technology and expertise will support our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe.”
