As smartphones continue their upward trend, PC sales have shown a 6 percent decline in 2016, compared to 2015 sales numbers. This is the fifth consecutive annual decline in sales, as reported by the Seattle Times.
It was also reported that the top 5 PC makers are Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus and Apple. Not much change from 2015’s list, but Dell was the only company to see a 2.6% increase in sales, all of these companies have a Private-label brand name.
What does this mean for PC makers? Figure out a way to boost sales by inventing new types of personal computers. We’ve seen the trends with laptop/tablet hybrids and all-in-one pc systems for a while now, but nothing solid has come up yet that would “stick” with consumers like smartphones have.
The Future of Personal Computers
For what it’s worth, I’m not too worried by the sales numbers. I’m rather excited to see what PC makers have in store for us as they battle to regain their market share. I’m hoping to see more specialized systems and innovations that can push the boundaries of computing even further cause goodness knows I don’t want to be stuck staring at a small portable screen for the rest of my life.
Let’s be honest, while I’m excited by the progress of smartphones and the power now available at my fingertips, I still love the PC the most. There is just so much power you can pack into a desktop system, along with all the monitors and accessories that come with it that I’d rather see it go big then to go home.
While this doesn’t mark the end of the “personal computer era”, it does shift the vision slightly. Will we be more dependent on our smartphones for everything, including what we use laptops and desktops for? Will smartphones become that powerful? Or will we revert back to our personal computers because we recognize the need for them?
