Google has decided to add a feature that enables individuals to blur faces in YouTube to protect the identities of individuals in videos posted in the site.

According to YouTube, they added the option or tool due to observations of human rights activists noticed that no video sharing sites offer such a tool to protect person’s identity including minors.

You can activate the feature by clicking on the ‘Blur All Faces’ box in the video enhancements tool on the site.

This move by YouTube is also aimed at those videos that cater to children’s rights.

According to a YouTube blog post, “Whether you want to share sensitive protest footage without exposing the faces of the activists involved, or share the winning point in your 8 year old’s basketball game without broadcasting the children’s faces to the world, our face blurring technology is a first step towards providing visual anonymity for video on YouTube.”

The new blur tool is currently under developmental stages so don’t expect that it’s going to be perfect.

YouTube is proud to host activist videos and says that they developed the blur tool to help these individuals conceal their identities.

“Visual anonymity in video allows people to share personal footage more widely and to speak out when they otherwise may not,” YouTube added.
