The Aakash or UbiSlate 7, India’s first low-cost-tablet, is garnering a lot of attention and as well as high requests from consumers. More than a million orders were placed online two weeks after it was released to the public.

UK-based vendor Datawind established three more factories in India just to facilitate the rising demand for this cheap tablet.

India’s Economic Times reported that 1.4 million units of Aakash tablet, priced at $47 or 2,499 rupees, have been placed, a mere two weeks since it was released online by Ncarry.com, Datawind’s e-commerce partner. They have released at least 30,000 UbiSlate 7 initially.

That Aakash tablet was unveiled just last October. The inexpensive tablet was commissioned by the Government of India to target those at the local education sector. Datawind is planning to introduce the second installation of the device, called the UbiSlate 7+, this month for only $56.38. This device will have a SIM card slot for GPRS and 2G Internet.

With the popularity of the device, the students would have to wait for their tablets since the Aakash devices would first end up with consumers before they finally get their hands on it.
