700,000 units of Android devices activated everyday? Sound unbelievable.

But this figure was shared by Andy Rubin, Google’s director for mobile platforms, on his Google+ website (under the name Bureau of Android Statistics).

Mr. Rubin also added that, “and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and ‘activations means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

The figure doubled compared to Google’s report a year ago, when they said that 300,000 Android devices activated on a daily basis.

Apple doesn’t have such activation figures. But we should take a look at Apple’s iPad and iPhone sales daily. According to Apple’s last quarterly report, they are selling a combined 315,000 units from those two.

Android’s share of the market has been rising steadily. According to the NPD Group, Android accounts to 44% of smartphones in the U.S. (sales) in the third quarter. They jumped 11% from the second quarter. Apple on the other hand, flat-lined last quarter increasing its market share by only 1%. While RIM lagged behind continuing its free fall losing 6%.

Rubin’s Google+ account post is open to the public and comments are welcome. One user named Gaurang Dave wrote: “I too am an Android user and judge fan of the operating system… buy my only issue is the OS upgrade… I just bought a new device couple of months ago… an now am sure that there is no way I can update the OS… unless I root it and risk bricking my phone… Andy please fix this… and find a way so that users can easily upgrade their phones.”
