If you’re thinking of heading out to eBay to purchase perfumes for your special someone this holiday season, better think again.
A French court has ordered popular online auction site eBay to pay 1.7 million euros (2.5 million dollars) to luxury goods maker Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH). The fine was for selling unauthorized perfumes.
According to Pierre Gode, LVMH administrator, the court ordered the payment after eBay violated an injunction banning them to sell LVMH brand perfumes like Kenzo, Givenchy, Christian Dior and Guerlain.
eBay hopes the ruling will be overturned, calling the injunction an abuse of “selective distribution”.
“Today’s outcome hurts consumers by preventing them from buying and selling authentic items online,” said Alex Von Schiermeister, director of eBay Europe.
“We believe that the higher courts will overturn this ruling and ensure that e-commerce companies such as eBay will continue to provide a platform for buyers and sellers to trade authentic goods,” he added.
In September, a French court also ordered eBay to pay 80,000 Euros to LVMH for selling fake versions of its branded perfumes.
